I realise every piece of fiction is full of holes, but I never understood why, if the Imperium is prepared to Exterminatus their own planets when things go sour, why they don't send fleets into the Eye of Terror, and wipe out every chaos controlled world? Bad sportsnamnship?

What does the bomb do? Make an explosive chain reaction of the atoms which is in the atmosphere on the planet? Because that whould explain why the whole world get's devoured in a maw of fire that doesn't exceed the atmosphere level.

there are other types of exterminatus, like the Life-Eater virus which literally turns all the organisms on a planet to a stinking mess of goo. one shot from orbit ignites the flammable gases and it all burns away.
the Imperium have got exterminatus pretty well covered.

I realise every piece of fiction is full of holes, but I never understood why, if the Imperium is prepared to Exterminatus their own planets when things go sour, why they don't send fleets into the Eye of Terror, and wipe out every chaos controlled world? Bad sportsnamnship?

Because the energies of the warp will twist the minds of every single human being in the Imperial fleet. They will turn their loyalty to Chaos or die a horrible death.
Only Grey Knights or Exorcists could withstand the twisting power of the Dark Gods. But they are few in number compared to the traitor Legions and demons.

I didn't say the raid mission with a couple thousand space marines would be successful. I just said that they could endure the twisting powers of the Gods and will probably kill at least some demons and CSM. But overall it will be pointless attack with great casualties.

@VascusGaming Alright, 1.) no chaos marines are in the void. They are in the warp. The void is like the warp, only the Daemons there cannot be controlled. 2.) Abaddon launched the most successful crusade, and the Imperial Fists no longer go on crusades. They have dedicated their existence to defending planets, not conquering them. The Templar's go on Crusades now.
And remember, we all face the threat of the Necron and the Tyranids. Fate will determine who lasts longer.

Its an ongoing chaos. To understand the warp, void, and eye of terror. All of which are one in the same, all maddening , just different things, choose to inhabit it. Abaddon's crusades have failed, theres few Chaos Lords or Daemon Primarchs that get things done like Angron. Cadia is strong, and Abaddon is a fool.

What does the bomb do? Make an explosive chain reaction of the atoms which is in the atmosphere on the planet? Because that whould explain why the whole world get's devoured in a maw of fire that doesn't exceed the atmosphere level.

there are other types of exterminatus, like the Life-Eater virus which literally turns all the organisms on a planet to a stinking mess of goo. one shot from orbit ignites the flammable gases and it all burns away.
the Imperium have got exterminatus pretty well covered.
