The sharks are sometimes concentrated very close to the San Diego shoreline and in fact you can see kiddies swimming on the beach at times when fishing for them. Look there is nothing to worry about. Most of the sharks that people are swimming and surfing with every day are fish and ray eaters. There is vast amounts of fish life off SD coastline. With the very deep water sharply meeting the shallows in this area you have to expect so. The makos in this area are generally small.
Mate they are all released and we have tagged a lot of them also. None of the fish caught on these charters are killed. In fact there is a strict no kill policy in place. However there is a daily bag limit of two for those who do kill them. As for being a stupid idea to fish Mako's on fly well lets just say you have no idea of the fishery , fly fishing or photography. They are not classified as endangered. So rack off ya tool bag!
First of all the Mako Shark is an endangered species. Second of all practicing catch and release doesn't make it a good idea. Often hooks left by fishermen make it harder for sharks to hunt and swallow prey and therefore can cause them to die. Or do you remove all hooks from their jaws? Maybe you got some footage of that?
Just as I thought you never watched the video. Yes we have lots of footage of that and there has been a device designed to remove the DE-BARBED hooks. You can see it in use at the end of the video. And as they are not declared endangered there is still a commercial fishery and recreational bag limit on these fish. We are totally against anything but catch and release on these fish. Your intentions are good but you are terribly misinformed
For the "...you have no idea of the fishery, fly fishing or photography". I think it's a stupid practice to chum for sharks till they come close to the boat to then throw a fly in the water and catch them. There are much more challenging and environment friendlier alternatives in fly fishing. The same for photography. I spend 2 months with Great White Sharks and Blue Sharks in South Africa and you can get much better footage when diving and interacting with them than to catch em.
We don't actually chum like those blokes who have watched JAWS one to many times. Mako's are predominately fish eaters and we lay a scent trail. Blues , Hammerheads, Makos and the occasional GW find the trail and the boat. The fish take flies with gusto and fight well often taking to air in spectacular leaps. We use appropriate fly tackle for the job and although we beef up our terminal gear to ensure quick release we sometimes fish IGFA regulations.
Capt Dave has released over 4000 sharks with 2 makos over 1000 lb each with this method. If you dive with sharks I'm thinking your in a cage. Stop being a do-gooder and wannabe. I've been on the ocean all my life and probably seen more big fish than you have had hot dinners.
Everytime I'm in the ocean (which is almost everyday) I see one of these bastards faces in my head. creepiest shark there is in my opinion. Nicely put together video.
Yeah okay you can keep Split Enz and you can argue hard for Pavlova. Next you will be telling me AC/DC is Scottish and Bondi is the capital of New Zealand.

How far off of the coast of SD is this? Mako sharks are pretty damn aggressive.

@aussieflyfish hey im getting a GoPro...does it need a skeleton to go under water !?

@beyonceboy100
No the skeleton case has cutouts to allow sound and cooling. It would soak your camera.

I am a flyfisher, too. And I really like the sport. I also do have a GoPro. But I would never have the stupid idea to fish for endagered species!
