@servantrose TRASH???!!!! your comment is completely ignorant. the story is about desire and forbidden love. Isabelle is abused by her husband & she's in a very unhappy marriage which she feels trapped in, and Stephen is someone who understands her and who will let her escape and feel loved.. I mean i don't want to even begin to explain the whole concept to you because you are clearly too stupid to understand -_- The story doesn't influence pp to do the same type of behaviour -____-
Can't say I was in love with Great Expectations, this was far far more favourable in my opinion. The second part to Birdsong in particular was fantastic. Reminded me of Occupation too - another great war themed (modern) feature the Beeb made.
i love eddie redmanye<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<<3he's gorgous and the book is amazing the tv series was exellent watch it! by the way the soundtrack is nicholas hooper i think
@WetPurplePaint Yes! Of course it does. If you haven't watched it, I don't want to spoil it for you - but this mini series has a well developed plot! The relationships relate to real life easily, and the romance isn't too overwhelming. Friendship and bravery are portrayed excellently throughout the two episodes, and the main couple is hot. What more could you want?
How I managed to get through the first 40 minutes of this 1st episode of 'Birdsong', I'll never know. I didn't care much for the lead characters, Stephen and Isabelle as they left me cold. All they did was to stare at each other without speaking. I had some trouble trying to hear the French actress's English dication when she spoke. I found the war scene which some soldier gets his guts blown apart particularly gruesome so that was enough for me.
I have to say that I found Birdsong on BBC1 utterly compelling viewing. It was with some trepidation that I watched as Birdsong as its probably my favourite book and I worried that they would struggle to do the book justice as they had failed to on stage a few years ago.
The emotion of the story was brought to life brilliantly in this adaptation and had me in tears, especiallly in the second episode. Eddie Redmayne and Joseph Rawle in particular were brilliant. Congratulations to all involved.
was sceptical about this because the book is one of the most outstanding pieces of literature ever written, but this adaptation lives up to the novel's reputation. Eddie Redmayne is the perfect actor to play Stephen Wraysford, exactly how i imagined him to be. credit must go to the BBC for following the novel almost to the letter.
I think that the BBC's origional british dramas are definatley under celebrated. They are all brilliant pieces of work :) like Sherlock and Great Expectations. Id rather watch these than Hollywood movies!!!
Does anyone know hwo wrote the classical piece of music in the series, that keeps popping up? It was played in the last scene right at the end (in particular)
:O That was my face when I realised Isabelle in Birdsong is also Fleur Delacour in Harry Potter. Also, Clémence Poésy has flawless English and speaks it with such a good accent!
The British writer/director has done what I have been screaming for British filmmakers to do. Like their European siblings, work with the silence. Much can be conveyed and each second of the shot need not be interrupted with the spoken word. It makes for compelling, beautiful, storytelling. And the chemistry, between the actors truly exquisite.
I really liked this! I was looking forward to it so much and although it doesn't touch the book (which is still the most amazing piece of literature I have come across yet) it was worth the wait and I think they have done what they could with it because the book is so full of detail and other scenes :) xxx
she wasn't in 28 days later! unless you're getting mixed up with Imogen Poots from 28 weeks later. but yes, this drama was excellent. i can't wait for the next episode.
Oh Sunday nights are the best start of with call the midwife then lie back and watch this. Last week it was Sherlock with the gorgous Benedict Cumberbatch and now Eddie Redmayne, trouble is you now you have to be at work on Monday Morning.
@TheWhiterose1603 You re so right. I like all the shows you mentioned. I actually ordered dvd´s of sherlock because it has stopped and can´t miss it. Also enjoy midwife a lot.
Watched the first episode of this last night. It's really good. I've only read Charlotte Gray from Faulks and wasn't all that take with it but this really has me hooked. Whoop! looking forward to the concluding part.
@rumpusdog1 A lot of people have suggested that Warhorse the film was overly sentimental, the characters not well drawn and not as effective as the book. So, I would suggest you that opinions and views are what these things are all about.
I cannot explain absolute love of this book, I get shivers every time I see this trailer and if it even comes close to the book then it will be a work of art. I thank the person who chose for my English class to study this book because it is one of the most heart string pulling pieces of writing I have ever met and at the end of it I just wanted to meet Stephen!!! :) I CAN'T WAIT FOR SUNDAY!!! x
I saw this on stage with Ben Barnes as Stephen Wraysford (Eddie REdmayne's character) and it is such an amazing book!!!! I cannot recommend it more!!!! Such perfect casting as well!
I am really looking forward to this, and am trying very, very hard to watch it with an open mind ... but to me, there could never be anyone other than Ben Barnes to play Stephen Wraysford. And I have to say that Clemence Poesy looks ridiculously young to play Isobel, she looks younger than Stephen, instead of at least a decade older. Nevertheless, I am hoping that at least with the TV version we should get the whole book portrayed on the screen.
Saw a special screening at BAFTA. Well meaning, but so predictable and soooooooo slow. Full of long lingering "I can't speak" close-ups. Every scene is approached with the same delayed, cautious pace. Beautiful to look at, but the leads are dull, and there was very little to intrigue this viewer to watch the rest.
@CrazyPeepsx Haha same here! Quite funny reading the red room scenes aloud when there's only one dude in the class :L Brilliant book! Are you doing Journey's End or How To Kill a Mockingbird as your play? :P I'm doing J.E :)
@Nikirockztar there's only 2 in mine and 1 actually likes it and remembers the page number too XD and yes I've finished Journey's End, we went as a collective A-Level group to Wolverhampton to see Journey's End at their theater it was sensational, we all were almost in tears at the end it hit home for sure :)
@CrazyPeepsx haha so lucky! We went to go and see JE in Manchester :P It was rather amusing to say the least xD. But it was sooo good! I think the actors who played Stanhope, Raleigh and Trotter had it dead right, they were the best :D But when you went did they pronounce Raleigh as "RAW-LEIGH"? Because our teachers have been saying it as Raleigh, like the bike XD. Got so confused xDDD.
@Nikirockztar nice, and I quite liked the man who played Stanhope he was the best for me, Raleigh was good too and Trotter was so funny and yeah they were dead on, and my teacher pronounces Raleigh as 'rally' and i say it however XD, they did come to my theatre where I live and a friend offered me a ticket free of charge to go and see it, i don't know why I didn't accept but i don't regret not accepting it, once was enough i got all the messages, plus i can sympathise
@Nikirockztar it's not supposed to be amusing, and quite frankly the audience members who laughed throughout the play, ruined the performance. Thanks for that
@TheProjectJustice Did I say that I physically laughed? No, I did not. I was ACTUALLY referring to the fact about how funny the amusing parts of the play were. Because R.C Sherriff did intend for there to be some humour. It was hailed as one of the most realistic war plays, you seriously think that they didn't have a small joke in the trenches? They may have been soldiers, but they were still men! Don't judge me because you read into my comment wrong. Cheers.
@Nikirockztar So then, you didnt physically laugh? Oh fair enough XDDDDDDDDD do you therefore agree that the idiots laughing throughout the play were laughing at the wrong moments and got it all wrong?
@xanderburchill Nah, did I heck, was an amazing play!! :O At the Manchester one, hardly anyone laughed where it wasn't appropriate, so I wouldn't know. But in general I agree with the statement that if something is not intended to be comedic, then it should not be laughed at. Especially considering that this is war literature/playwriting and not a comedy sketch :P
I was at the BAFTA screening of this last night and they confirmed that the first episode/part of this will air on BBC1 on the 22nd January (next Sunday). No confirmation of when the second part will be on.
@CravingNoMercy Moi? Follow? :L oh dear xDDD. Well, at least we frightfully eager for its release! Bring on the 22nd? :L :L I see no Weir? o.o or did I just miss him in all the excitement?Wonder if Mrs Morgan will let us watch it....xDDDD
I heard it was on the BBC in January so on the 1st I went looking for it on my planner and found out it had been on 9am that morning - who is even awake at 9 on New Years Day to watch anything?! Devastated I missed it!
I have read this book 3 times and on each occasion it has bought me to tears, so well researched and written I only hope that this adaptation will truly do it justice.
@RKTheMauritian What do you think of the book? My English teacher suggested I read it and, being 13, I'm finding it slightly more advanced than I thought I would.
@lajones98 I'd recommend it really. It's not a hard read; and being 13, it will help you in the future when you come to study novels/plays. 100% recommended.
well done bbc, good adaptation but you should read the book

Was such a powerful book, full of every emotion you could imagine. If anyone's capable of bringing it to life, its the BBC.

I'd give it to HBO myself.

I have read this book 3 times and on each occasion it has bought me to tears, so well researched and written I only hope that this adaptation will truly do it justice.

Still don't think the book was that great and this looks like another boring bbc period drama version of it.

Looks like they cut a lot out of it. Like the bit with Germans and the parts set in the 1990s.

The BBC are clearly keen for me to pass A-level English literature. Cheers!

@RKTheMauritian That's what I was thinking... It would save reading the book !

@RKTheMauritian What do you think of the book? My English teacher suggested I read it and, being 13, I'm finding it slightly more advanced than I thought I would.
lajones98 1 month ago
@lajones98 I'd recommend it really. It's not a hard read; and being 13, it will help you in the future when you come to study novels/plays. 100% recommended.

@RKTheMauritian Thanks. It was Part One with all the love elements I found difficult and slightly boring. I'm quite enjoying it now though.
lajones98 1 month ago
@lajones98 Really? I thought part one was good. Part two's got more action and is more lively! Part 3's fairly dull, but important to the novel.
