UK, Britain, Great Britain can all be used inter changably as they all mean the same thing. Americans prefer UK as they have a thing for acronyms!

I am not familiar with any steriotypes. The only exception is that Americans love coffee and British love tea. I am American, but I don't like coffee. I like to drink tea occasionaly. IMHO the British have better taste in beverages. I am an exception that makes the steriotype less supported. I am patriotic, and I love America. I also like Britain, because most of my favorite fantasy authors and my favorite band come from there. I don't think of Americans as preppies or British as snobs.
In FILMS (movies is an American word) British people have really posh accents ALL the time... But there are lots of different accents around Britain (Liverpool, Manchester, London, etc.) and barely anyone actually sounds like that...

I would also question your teacher, presuming it was your teacher who told you that it was wrong/snobby to call your country the United States. It in no way infers the idea of being better than other countries, and accurately describes your country- a union of states that each have some degree of self-governance. How is calling your country by its full name rude to another? That's like saying I should call my country Zealand, because New Zealand implies I'm against old age.
As a note, Great Britain is a specific term coined in the 18th century, encompassing England, Scotland and Wales.
Moving on from that, your stereotype of British people relies on the depiction of one specific portion of English (and specifically English) culture. Try listening to a Lancashire accent and thinking it's posh or stuck up!

Great Britain's the geographic name of the island (in the British Isles), not really the country. It ended up with that name hundreds of years ago to differentiate it from Britanny- as in 'the bigger island'. Most Brits just use the terms UK or Britain when talking about the actual country (though not in international sports for some reason). It's usually foreigners that still use 'Great Britain' when referring to the UK.
British people embrace a lot of different cultures, respect and accept difference. Rarely do we stereotype. Your education, evidently provided by films, are generally directed and produced by Americans. I am not familiar with any steriotypes. The only exception is that Americans love coffee and British love tea. I am American, but I don't like coffee. I like to drink tea occasionaly. IMHO the British have better taste in beverages. I am an exception that makes the steriotype less supported. I am patriotic, and I love America. I also like Britain, because most of my favorite fantasy authors and my favorite band come from there. I don't think of Americans as preppies or British as snobs.

As a note, Great Britain is a specific term coined in the 18th century, encompassing England, Scotland and Wales.
Moving on from that, your stereotype of British people relies on the depiction of one specific portion of English (and specifically English) culture. Try listening to a Lancashire accent and thinking it's posh or stuck up!

Great Britain's the geographic name of the island (in the British Isles), not really the country. It ended up with that name hundreds of years ago to differentiate it from Britanny- as in 'the bigger island'. Most Brits just use the terms UK or Britain when talking about the actual country (though not in international sports for some reason). It's usually foreigners that still use 'Great Britain' when referring to the UK.

@ashc1153 I respect the cultural differences betweeen England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, but I must point out that Britain is, in fact, a thing. The island of Great Britain to be exact. This island, is the majority of the land area of the United Kingdom, and holds the countries of England, Wales, and Scotland.
