  • I saw a movie shot in the 60s about the future where watching commercials from the past was the entertainment .... and here i sit 2012 this is my shows i watch commercials from my childhood that is a big LOL

  • wow , thats right when the msm was trying to destroy america

  • today these ole farts are still living but now on oxy cotton lol

  • HAHAHAHA "exocaine"... replace the first two letters with a 'c'

  • all the network news broadcasts for the past 40 yrs, that i can remember ( since 1967-68 at least ) were pitching those type of "elderly" products ! nothing new !

  • @musicom67 I don't hate Steve Liesman, I loathe him. He's a cheerleading shill for TPTB. He was hired to tell the sheep what they want to hear. Did Becky give birth to Warren Buffett's love child? He just loves her!

  • My family and I went to the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia for some tests that day. I was only 16 and it was my last summer vacation from school. We also watched it at our house that night.

  • Life isn't easy without my Clorox

  • Do you have more footage of NBC's coverage of the resignation of P{resident Nixon??

I suspect the reason John Chancellor was in New York and not in Washington) may have been:

    (1) News about a possible resignation broke that afternoon, and Chancellor might not have the time to fly to D.C., or,

    (2) Chancellor may have been on vacation, was summoned back to work, and that the only way for him to return to the anchor desk in time for "Nightly" was to return to New York and not to go to D.C.

  • If my memory serves me correct, NBC's "all evening long continuous coverage" of President Nixon's resignation actually ended up running 22 consecutive hours, until the time that former President had arrived at his California (San Clemente) home (about 4:30 P.M. EDT August 9th).

The opening "theme" of "Nightly News" then consisted of a medley of the 1960's NBC hourly radio newscast sounder followed by a sounder that was used in the early 1970's at the end of NBC News television broadcasts.

  • @altfactor So that means the Tonight Show was prempted that night on NBC.

  • Is it just me, or are all these commercials focused on retired, arthritic, constipated, old people. They knew who watched the nightly news back then...

  • @playerhater812 Yeah, the same age group who NOW watch FOX NEWS!

  • Hey, it's Pearl from "Diff'rent Strokes" in the Gremlin commercial. (4:28) And "Dinner for One at Burger World." (4:48) Burger World is where Beavis and Butthead work.

  • This looks like it was pulled from 3/4'' U-Matic tape

  • Back then, you take a Bayer to get rid of morning stiffness...these days, you take a Viagra in order to get back your morning stiffness

  • Its awesome to look at these again.Like using a time machine. Can't beieve some of the commercials we watched back then. They seem so ridiculous today.I remember my dad audi tape recording Nixon's resignation speech. It was the only way to preserve historic events back then for the average income family.I also remember exactly what I was doing at the time, too.Visiting my brother and his wife during summer vacation from school

  • WOW! Just...WOW!

  • One of the guys in this commercial played NYC's mayor in the original "Taking of Pelham 123".

  • "I'm proud of my family, and I want them to look good. But it isn't easy without Clorox."

Yes, Clorox really brings out the white in those bags I keep over their heads!

  • The quality of this very good--I'm assuming this was from a 2" quad tape possibly recorded as an aircheck, (or for archivial purposes, considering the nature of the story)) by an NBC affiliate (or the network itself)?

  • The last commercial asks a very fitting question for a Nixon resignation news program: "You wouldn't sweep dirt under the rug?"

  • I was only 16 then. It was my last summer vacation from school. My family and I went to Childrens' Hospital in Philadelphia for some tests earlier in the day. Then I watched it at my parents' house that same night.

  • The quality of these commercials is unbeatable for it's age.

  • @mefault Yeah, the Aqua Velva one is ridiculous! Even commercials shot in 1980 don't look that crispy

  • In This Clip, From 0:00 To 0:26, It Was NBC News' NBC Nightly News With John Chancellor Video Open From Thursday Evening, August 8, 1974.

  • boy does this bring back memories. i was in third grade; just trying to enjoy the tube, and all of a sudden WATERGATE, WATERGATE, WATERGATE!

  • What are "fancy 'pricees'"?

  • In the Haley's M-O commercial was David Lewis (best known as the first Edward Quartermaine from GH).

  • The biggest lie on here is that Haley's M.O. was "great tasting". I took that crap back in the late 70's as a kid, and puked it everywhere.

  • Motherrrr.... i'd rather do it myself..... oopps wrong commercial...

  • The quality is fantastic. Was that on one of the old U-Matic machines? You know, you really don't hear people obsessed with waxy build-up anymore.

  • Wow..what a great time capsule....and with the same broadcast quality too..

  • If you were taping TV in 1974, you or your folks musta been quite wealthy. "Regular" folks didn't start getting VCRs until 1977....

  • @musicom67 We were very much an upper middle class family and didn't buy a VCR until the 80's. They cost a fortune, none of my friends had them either. The cool thing was that when the video stores started popping up, they rented VCR's along with the movies. My folks even kept our 1970 19" Zenith color t.v. well into the 1980's. I guess that's why we always had plenty of money, now even poor people have flat screens.

  • @virnman My family got our first VCR in 1983 (I was in high school). That seems to be a general timeframe when 'most' families took the plunge. Hardcore TV guys, around that same time, already had their 'Betamaxes' for 5 years already. Remember when a blank T-120 could cost upwards of $20 a pop! Of course, when MTS Stereo was introduced in 1984, the VCR was already 'old'....

  • @musicom67 Yep, that sounds about right. We finally got both cable t.v. and a VCR sometime around 1983. I remember having to make curfew and then coming home from dates and watching MTV or HBO until the wee hours of the morning. I still can't believe how much VCR's and the Sony Betamax cost back in the day. Considering VCR's were $800-$1000 in the mid to late '70's and you could buy a nice used car for that. Amazing.

  • @musicom67 first t-120 maxell i bought in '81 to dub some super 8 films i had, cost 18.00. cripes !

  • Was I the only one who didn't have arthritis back in 1974? Granted I was an infant when these commercials aired, but still....

  • In the AMC commercial, is that Frank Welker portraying the game show host?

  • @heine71 Nope, not Welker. His voice and look are unmistakable.

  • I remember the Scout and Gremlin commercials like it was yesterday .. had them on cassette tape somewhere.. but, its great to actually see them again.. "Dinner for One at Burger World!!!"

  • @joebradio Eureka !!! I just drug out an old cassette tape labeled "Summer 1974" and parts of the Scout and Gremlin spots are on there back to back.. I'm beginning to wonder if I taped those from this newscast way back in 74 ...maybe I'm the only one who is geeky enough to find that interesting.

  • Wasn't that the same set WNBC used for their broadcasts of NewsCenter4?

  • @newscaster13 YEP.

  • So many adds for arthritis relief, laxatives, etc. Was thier average viewer age 80+?

  • Nice old clip; great quality too

  • There's something about Aqua Velva that inspired an unnamed relative to chug it from the bottle back in the day.

And as a kid, I used to refer to the product that helps one "get back in the swing" as "Haley's and Moe."
