  • 250 gb is not plenty of space

  • So if I put my save DATA from my 40 gig in my 320 gig it wont be formatted right

  • I got a new hard drive I have the plug to make it external can I just back it up on that then just put that in? I don't have no other external

  • @xBubba916x if that external drive you are referring to isn't going into the PS3, then yes, it should work. You can't back up and restore from the same Hard drive you're installing.

  • Step 1 - Change hard drive

Tip - After done scream at your cheese

  • Great video, managed to get a 2.5inch 500Gb sata hdd bought from amazon working on my ps3 no probs

  • @TigerDirectBlog does the external hard drive need to have specifications??

  • my ps3 is corrupted, does this mean when i upgrade to 160gb, it'll make my ps3 corrupted?

  • @ihavefriendsuckedin just put your ps3 into recovery mode after replacing the hard drive with a bigger 1.just put the ps3 on standby mode with the power light on red and when it is on red just press and hold the power button until you hear to quick rapid beeps you should now see a message press the ps button on the controller.plug in the controller using the usb cable the press the ps button then follow the on screen instructions.

    Please somebody help me!!! Please

  • @luiserike I could depend on the firmware you have, I read somewhere that with one of the latest firmwares sony have put something in that wont let you upgrade now (to stop piracy or some rubbish like that), I kept my firmware on 3.55 and managed to do mine ok. I hope this helps.

  • Great video but he leaves out one crucial point; that unscrewing those screws is a job in and of itself. They are too tight and they strip very easily. Make sure you have the right size screw driver and a pair of needle nose pliers!

  • If you're still having problems watch this video: /watch?v=APtkJHWbWX8

  • i like it, my big promo cheap hardrive check in my channel

  • Can u also transfer (backup) your data without an external hard-drive?

  • @WereBrooklynAt if you have games or stuff you dont want to loss

  • Do I need to deactivate the users and then back it up??

  • Yh, that's kewl, buuuuutttt... I know that FAT32 only can copy files smaller, then 4 GB. Now, im wanna to change HDD, cause i almost got no free space, but INfamous takes 7 GB on my PS3 HDD. Will FAT32 can copy on PS3 that file? I doubt about that....

  • where can i buy one of the drives

  • does my external hard drive need to be blank before i back it up?

  • @m0nster510 Nope

  • thankyou very helpful and easy because i just got skyrim and it is not friendly with space =P

  • Will i be able to back up full games that i downloaded directly to my system? And does the external hard drive have to be empty, nothing else on it, to be able to back up and restore?

  • Comment removed

  • how do you format your external hardrive to a fat32 ?

  • then three days later your 360 or the most poorly constructed system gets red ring and breaks, plus if your getting a 250gb model why the hell would you pay extra for a store to install it

  • @gorildo also u can get 360 gb ps3s, and ur lookin at a fat not a slim, and we've got better games, i can go on all day

  • @gorildo lol you pay the store. WE USE PHILIPS SCREW DRIVERS HERE!!!!

  • @gorildo ah a console war kid.

  • the menu doesnt show up it said it is corrupted, the in restores itself but nothing happens it stays in 0 precent what can I ?do?

  • ok so now i just install new hard drive but after when i turn on the screen come up for 10 sec then freeze so i turn off then turn on back again it's says no signal on my tv what should i do ? pls tell me

  • what happen if i don't back up pls let me know

  • @hackmypants984 it won't recognize the files if you don't backup to fat32 format

  • @hackmypants984 If you don't back up then all your memory on games and stuff will be lost permanently

  • It took me 1.5 hour to back-up my 40gb ps3 data.

then 10 minutes to replace hard rive and download new version of the playstation.

Then 15 minutes to install. And that's how far i am now. let's how long the rest will take.

But TigerDirectBlog thank you for this veryy usefull video. I couldn't have done it without this video.

  • Thanks Man, your a huge help!!

  • does backing it up take your psn account as well as saved game data and it does cost a lot of money 100 + for internal hard drive and another 50 for external send me a link for cheaper prices ty

  • How are you supposed to do this if u have a slim....

  • @Kanthide same process. HDD cover is on the front of the system, below the disc drive on this slim I think.

  • I cringed when he slapped the power switch in the back to shut it off

  • can i upgrade my hdd on FW 4.0????

  • Does anyone know where to but some hard drives, also i have a slim, would i still have to follow those directions exactly or can the rpm be higher or something?

  • Can someone please tell me how to back up your memory if you are using more than one user on your PS3? Like the guy said it on the video but what if there are other users on your PS3?

  • Also, FYI, I just noticed. If you are following this and you have a newer 80GB or higher model, the tray does not slide to the right and pull out. Instead, a little lever pops out from behind the screw. Pull this straight out and the drive will release.

  • will a 2.5 inch SATA 3 7200 work ?

  • @JMOJoker 7200rpm drives will work but the difference will be minimal

  • @lavalamp360 will a sata II work aswell

  • can i use a 7200rpm hard drive it will still work right and wont ruin my system right?

  • Seagate Momentus 5400 500GB 5400RPM SATA 3Gb/s 8MB Cache 2.5 Inch Internal NB Hard Drive ST9500325AS-Bare Drive, well this hard drive work i found it on amazon?

  • @0:09 "Dr Bauer" you spelled 'install' incorrectly...

  • @simhopp Yeah it does read the usb :S It is really weird

  • This instruction does not work any more.

PS3 with 4.00 will not format the hard disk without few more steps.

once you physically install a new hard disk in the PS3,

you need to goto Sony web site, and down load PS3 Firmware Upgrade.

which is single 185mb file named PS3UPDAT.PUP you can download onto your PC.

you need to copy this file on USB drive under /PS3/UPDATE/ folder

than plug in the USB drive in PS3.

turn on the PS3 and follow the instruction.

  • @simhopp Hey i have tried this but it does not work!! I put the update on the ps3 and followed instructions and nothing! Can you help!?

  • @dorksterful

did you put the file in correct directory(aka folder)?

once you install the hard disk, and turn on the PS3

it will say to put update drive and press and hold both start and select button for few seconds

this is a good instruction video who had a similar problem

    watch?v=hFwERN5V7XQ

  • @simhopp Yeah i put the update in the folder PS3 and then within that folder made another folder UPDATE and then placed the update in the UPDATE folder. The ps3 told me to press both select and start and i did then it just went back to the same screen telling me to press them again. Do i need to hold them or what? Because it really is bazaar. Thx

  • @simhopp Can a backup be on the same external drive as the update? I backed up my ps3 to an external, and copies the update file to PS3\UPDATE\. The backup resides in PS3\EXPORT\. I cant figure out why it cant find the firmware on the same drive it found to perform the backup.

  • @cam94z28

well, I'm not sure, since I never tried it that way.

It is possible (I'm just guessing here) that reading USB external hard disk

require more software than USB drive.

ie, PS3 can not read USB external hard disk without something on the internal hard disk,

where as PS3 can read USB drive without anything on internal hard disk.

don't you have a USB drive?

  • @simhopp N/M, I'm an idiot. It had been a long day. I wasted an hour of my life because I couldn't read :P After taking a step back I realized it said, press START, and SELECT, not START and PS :P I wondered why it never moved to "checking..." and instead rebooted every time. After I used the correct buttons it worked flawlessly.

  • Same thing happen to me madrandomize0

  • Dr. Power...?

  • when i install the new hard drive and open the ps3 i get the message

"connect the controller using a usb cable, and then press the ps button"

after that i get "the system software can not be run correctly. press the ps button to try to restart the system. if the system canot be restarted, the system partition of the hadr disk must be reformatted and you must reinstall the system software.... " i am going out of my mind, i cant think something to solve it can you help me. i updated to v4.00.

  • @madrandomize0 getting the same problem ;x

  • I need an external hard drive!!!!!

  • @ZRossi24 externals do not work on PS3 unless its modded. You can read music, movies and pics off it, but no games can be read, or installed from it. Just to let you know so you dont go out and waste money. :)

  • Thank you so much for making this video. I've been wanting to do this for awhile but I didn't realize how easy it was to do. I have one of the original 80GB PS3's and sometimes I have to decided what is worth keeping. Gonna go and get a bigger hard drive soon. Thanks again.

  • Thank man I just return my PS3 slim to order a PS3 original I'll need some memory upgrade and I'll satisfy by backwards compatibility. This video is on my YouTube how to playlist.

  • Thanks for clarifying that the external drive had to be FAT32. I've been going crazy trying to figure out why my PS3 wouldnt see it!

  • QUESTION BECAUSE I KEEP HEARING DIFFERENT SHIT ABOUT TROPHIES, WHEN I CHANGE HARD DRIVES AND BACK UP DATA AM I STILL ABLE TO GET TROPHIES ON THE GAMES I'VE BEEN PLAYING AND EARNING TROPHIES FROM? I HEARD THE TRANSFERED DATA BLOCKS TROPHIES OR IS THAT JUST WHEN YOU TRANSFER DATA ONTO ANOTHER PS3?

  • @johnsonx19 You need to sync Trophies with the server before you do the backup. To do that all you have to do is look at them before doing the backup.

  • wooooooow OMG very Complex Xbox360 FTW

  • @5sean911

    *very* complex?

    Oh my.

  • does it HAVE to be sata or can it be sata 2 or sata 3?? PLEASE ANSWER!

  • just sata

  • PLEASE HELP! i got a 5400.3 seagate momentus 160 gig for my ps3. when i installed it into the ps3, it said it couldnt find a hard disk. i dont know why please help.

  • @dragonsGTO The rpm are to low you should buy a 7200rpm or faster hard drive.

  • @Ian9514 NO DO NOT DO THAT, I bought a 7200rpm before watching this video and like he says it is not compatible. I have boot issues and games that freeze on me. I am replacing it with a new 5400rpm today because I got tired of all the issues. SO USE A 5400rpm.

  • @dragonsGTO Could be that your Hard Drive needed to be formatted in FAT32. Other than that 5400rpm should work so if that's not it you need to return the HD and get a new one.

  • @dragonsGTO Double check that the hardrive is in correctly.

  • i followed it step by step with my 500gb 2.5inch sata 5400rpm samsung hardrive and it came up that it could not start due to it not being able to find something about the correct HDD ?

    any ideas ?

  • ookkaayy.... tried to install a 500gb hdd but got a "cannot start. the correct HDD was not found" any suggestions? i hope it's not a DOA -_-

  • Nvm... got it to work. had to jump through a few hoops but i got it :D

  • how to instal

  • well if u have a external hardrive anyway format it and jus keep it plugged in u can get a 2 terabyte (2000gb) for 150 dollars or even cheaper and format it and keep it plugged in more memory cheaper yes ore bulkey but yeh more space

  • Hi, I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I was wondering, if you replace the hard drive and fit the old hard drive into an external enclosure, would the ps3 save files still be on there?

  • @sacamt no just put then on a usb

  • PLEASE ANSWER THIS! when you back up the memory on the ps3, the data of my games is still on the ps3. so if i deleted all that stuff then restored it with the external hard drive, would i get all the data back?

  • Comment removed

  • I have a fat 60gb ps3 my question is if I replace the hard drive will I still be able to play ps2 games?

  • @TheSuperdarkmatter ... the harddrive has nothing to do with the disc-reader. the disc-reader is what plays the ps2 games and reads it.

  • PLEASE ANSWER! Can u use a thumb drive as a external harddrive

  • Can u use the external hard drive if you want to move your stuff from one ps3 to the ps3 slim?

  • anyone know if exFAT format drive will work?

  • Oh my god, Jack Bauer changed jobs, that cannot be good for the country....

  • or delete crap like friends profiles and demos that you have the full game for

  • Is it possible to get a 120 gb hardrive? The ones im finding online are about £40! I just want 60 Gigabytes extra space, but every hardrive gives 250gb or 500gb!

If anyone knows of a cheap hard drive with 60gb, or 40gb worth of space, message me.

  • What should the new internal drive be set to? FAT32?

  • i have less than 500 mb left and im getting mw3 tomorrow. thisll help

  • what about a 2 TB drive

  • so what is the price of a hardrive like? just 50gig or something like that, I've really got no idea how much a hardrive costs

  • @laatmekijken999 I just bought a 250GB one at Best Buy for $60. The prices range, and it depends on where you look.

  • i have 160 mb left

  • u forgot to mention other requirement... Superhuman Strength

  • I found this exact hard drive on amazon.com but 750gb. Will it still work?

  • @ModernRedneck13 is it SATA? is it 2.5"? does it have 5400rpm? 8mb cache? if so, yes it works

  • @Dreaperalchemist lol thanks man

  • @Dreaperalchemist there's a 500gb and a 750 gb. Both are SATA, 2.5 inch, 5400rpm. The 500 has 8mb cache but the 750 has 16mb cache. Does it matter?

  • @ModernRedneck13 hmm, from what ive been reading 16mb cache is just a bit better then 8mb. in terms of compatibility it doesnt rly matter

  • @Dreaperalchemist Ok thanks a lot :)

  • Should i buy a western digital or samsung harddrive?

  • dont u have to install the os

  • I have a question. I was thinking maybe instead of spending so much money on an external hard drive, I can just buy a 2 GB USB flash drive instead because i added the size of all my save data and it didn't even reach 1 GB. The game data installs can be reinstalled with my game discs and downloaded stuff can be redownloaded from the PS store. All this will work right? because i want to save money. Planning to upgrade to a 250 GB and that already cost a lot of money..

  • @Juicyness11 Yeah it should work but the saved data from your games (like your particular saves) would be transfered unless you copied them to the flash drive as well

  • Comment removed

  • Can u get any of this stuff from like best buy or somwhere. I REALLY dont like buying things online or having to wait to get them delivered in the mail.

  • @kingjones3000 well you can get the HDD from bestbuy and the screw driver from zellers or maybe even Bestbuy

  • @TigerDirectBlog does it matter what brand hard drive you use

  • The new hard drive Have 3 times more free space than the old hard drive

Man i wish i have the hard rive needed to Upgrade my PS3's tiny free room

  • i'm a bit confused witch is the ps3 Slim is that the 160GB?

  • This did no fucking work all I get is a black screen saying you must format the ps3 BUT IT WON'T LEME DO THAT !!!

  • HEY DID YOU FUCK THE GEFORCE 210 YET? FUCK YOU DUMB BITCH, YOU BE LYING TO PEOPLE GO FUCK YOUR HAND SOME MORE BITCH!!!11

  • Do your trophies get deleted ?? plzzz reply !!!

  • @SScool22 Pretty sure your trophies carry over on your Playstation Network account, it shouldn't anyhow if your backing up your hardrive, btw everyone, this video is 3 years old. There's a company "Hip Street" selling hard drives exactly for playstation3's.. Found my 1 TB hard drive at Best Buy for around 120$

  • @SScool22 sync your trophies online... before you swap your HDD. than you'll be fine,

  • Can we use USB flash drive

  • Hi I have tryed to email you at bauer@com.puter.tv does not work.

So please help me with this question. First I had a 80gb ps3 with some things on it like jailbreak but I needed some space so I brought a 320gb harddrive now I want to go back to the 80gb harddrive and it now says it's blank why

  • I dont have the thing at 1:47 in this video so will i lose all my black ops data when i upgrade my space so i can play mw3

  • @beast2sniper yes. you are putting a new HD so there will be nothing on it. what you can do is get a usb and put your saves on it and transfer to your new HD. also, don't forget to sync your trophies

  • Oh and also, does it matter if it's a SATA or SATA II?

  • Great video. A couple questions though. I'm upgrading my 80gb ps3. Which is the better, quieter brand, Western Digital or Seagate? Also is it fine to put a 500gb, or should you go smaller. And lastly, is it fine to buy one from overseas? Are the all the same?

Would appreciate any help anyone can give :)
