  • Love you dad. Miss you. Thank you God for the promise of seeing him again in Heaven.

  • every time i hear this song i think of my dad. Thanks John. Love and miss you dad.

  • I first met John in 1978 when he recorded 2 of my songs. Knew he had talent

& class back then. This song proves it all.

    Cheers John

  • This is the saddest song ive ever heard ! god bless

  • <3 Love...

  • my dad passed away in april the 17 and at the furneral we could only play the music to this heartbreaking but truthful song but my dad had his five daughters and five sons and his braveful wife to sing it ..id thought that he would be around forever miss u lots jackoxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxyour the best

  • This is heartbreaking I can't see for tears. I miss my Dad I loved him so much such a wonderful kind and perfect Dad.

  • I remember hearing this song for the first time a year after my Dad passed away. I was at work and just stopped what I was doing as a tear rolled down my cheek. I sat there staring out the window and for a moment we were together again. This song still gets me when I hear it, but it always triggers a memory of great times my dad and I had.

  • My Dad would have been 81 today. 5 1/2 years may have passed but I'll never forget him...This song means so much to me and my brother. It's so true and still makes me cry...God Bless you Dad xxx

  • He (my father) was always in my life and I guess I thought it would be that way forever. Just remember, those who read these words, your father who you may take for granted will one day be gone and on that day, you will suddenly realize you will never ever see him again. There are no second chances in this life.

  • I lost my dad on the 26th. I knew it was close and found this song for the first time. I listened to it, cried, and went to play it for him when I found him gone. He was my best friend and I miss him so much. He was a great Irishman and better father. He woulda loved this. I am playing it at his wake tomorrow. Love you dad and miss you.

  • beautiful...

  • Merry Christmas Dad. Things are going ok. I miss you terribly. I wish you could have held your grand daughter. I wish she could have met you. But don't worry, she'll know you... I promise.

  • thank you, lord, for my dad. he's taught me so much about life, and i am so lucky that he still around today. i love you daddy!

  • My old Dad is still kicking along at 81, so I am still blessed to have him in my life. But I am going to miss him like hell when he passes, so I make the most of every moment I still have with him. I think this will have to be played at his funeral when he does pass. Damn it, this song breaks me up.

  • I have yet to get through this song without a tear rolling down my cheek. I miss you Dad.

  • My Dad's birthday today - he passed away two years ago..

  • December 4th 2006, I lost one of the most important people to me, my Grandfather. His request was this song was played at his funeral. I love this song more than anything. It reminds me so much of him, and makes me wish he was here beside me watching 'Coach's Corner' and collecting the McDonalds hockey cards... Not a day goes by I don't think of him. Everytime i listen to this song my tattoo I have for him itches.

  • Watched it five times...cried every time.

  • I miss my ole man as well.

  • I would consider this an Irish song as it was written by an Irishman

  • @bridgetoofar2 we weren't debating that it's Irish, we were just debating which Irishman wrote it, and it was Phil Coulter.

  • Just a quick point to the poster this isn't a Scottish song it's an Irish one written by the Furey brothers in memory of and tribute to their father

  • @MrScally43 wasn't it written by Phil Coulter?

  • @athull08 no there is a video on youtube of finbar furey saying that they wrote it in memory of their father phil coulter did a version of it tho as far as i'm aware

  • @MrScally43 please direct me to this video, because all the other information on the internet says it was written by Coulter.

And I've just looked on The Fureys and Davey Arthur's facebook page, and they said themselves "Phil Coullter wrote the song about our dad. Our Mother played the accordion"

  • @athull08 the video said "this song was written in tribute to our father" i assumed as such that it was written by the fureys themselves i could not find any evidence to the contrary and the video seemed to be evidence of their having written it could you point me to the information you found please because like i say i couldn't find any

  • @MrScally43 I'll Personal Message the link to you.

  • I LOVE YOU SPIKE AND I MISS YOU SO MUCH

  • Thank you. My Dad just passed away two days ago. A friend sent me this and it means a great deal. What a tribute. Thank you!!!!!!!!!

  • I wish someone would post the one when he sang this with the Irish Tenors. It is unbelievable to watch his emotional reaction... I think it was soon after his Dad passed away. OF course we all have that reaction about our Fathers, too. RIP Dad, I miss you every single day, you old man you, lol.

  • This song was sang at my grandas funeral. 8 Years On The 8th Of Spetember. 2 Days After My Dad His Sons Birthday. And Was Only With Us The Day B4 He Passed. Love You Always Granda. xOx

  • Great song, sung with feeling and emotion. Once they're gone all we have are the memories, all good for me. I had him for 82 years and he was the best dad a kid could have wanted. RIP Old Man, miss you everyday.

  • I was a young man in my early 20's when my father died (1985). Shortly thereafter I came accross this song. The tears flowed then... as they do now.

My father did make me the man I was then.... a far better man than I am today. The mess I made of my life since he died was totally down to me, for he taught me better.

I've got my self back on track these days and try to be the man I should have been... The man he had every right to expect me to be!

The tears have NOT all been shed! I miss him!

  • John, Thank you for this beautiful song. I never had that second chance but as I listen to your song over and over I know somewhere in this universe my Father is listening and knows my heart! He was a son of irish immigrants from Ballymadog and Ballymacoda and I was blessed to have him as a father. I once wrote he never" raised his hand, he never raised his voice, he never said an unkind word. He didn't take us to church but rather we went with him." He loved to listen to irish music. Thank you

  • what a lovely song and the emotion you sing it with is everything i feel but cant show love it
