Just to feed my vidder's curiousity, did you use masking to make all those crazy shapes?

why, yes I did! I tried cookie cutter, but it wasn't working the way I wanted it to, so I moved on to masking.

it took me about 4 days of almost continuous work (which is a while for me, because I'm always at home)
