i love this song! what he is singing about is exactly what happens in the book! there is an entire chapter where Jean Valjean is pacing back and forth in his room arguing with himself over what he is supposed to do, considering the innocent man (Champmathieu is his name), and Fantine and Cosette what is going to happen to them depending on what he chooses! (sigh) Les Mis is amazing.
Such an epic powerful moment in the show - does he keep quiet and let one man die or does he reveal himself and condemn his workers to poverty - is one man worth all that? Yes!
