  • Nice, an undiscovered gem! Thanks for posting this!

  • jeff lynne is the fucking man.

  • Many thanks for posting this elofan567! Haven't heard it for over 20 years!

  • some stoner music right there gottaa love it

  • ooh that violin sound on the guitar is so special. another little trick that Jeff discovered.

  • great old track thanks for uploading it - I have the idle race on an okd compilation - largely un noticed brilliance.good on you Mr Jeff Lynne

  • This is better than ANYTHING ELO has ever done. And I like ELO.

  • Wasn't Jeff Lynn behind this outfit ?

  • I saw Idle Race live in October 1969 at York University. They played the freshers night disco on the same bill as King Crimson. King Crimson were relatively unknown at the time.

This track, Days of Broken Arrows, was on the jukebox in the college bar throughout 1970. This is the first time I've heard it in 40 years. Spooky.

  • Wow! This is the first time I've really paid any attention to Jeff Lynne's early work with his pre-move/Elo outfit. Good stuff! And why this song didn't get a mid-70's ELO re-make like the Move's "Do Ya" had, I'll never understand after hearing it. It would've fit perfectly on 'Face The Music" or "New World Record", and I can sooo hear the patented Jeff Lynne/Louis Clark string-and-choir arrangement underneath.

  • I wonder the idle race with good with Roy Wood too.

  • This is awesome! It's unfortunate that their career mimicked their name..

  • That's simply AMAZING!

  • This song and "Hurry Up John" definitely deserve a wider audience recognition factor-what happened? The general public are musical dolts, so I guess I should'nt be surprised.

  • so good. jeff lynne's the best

  • this is on Richie Jacksons part in escape from boredom

  • I can't believe this track didn't chart.. Thats crazy as. I always thought it would of.. It's tremendous.

  • Richie Jackson!

  • Hotspot, all Idle Race tracks are available on Amazon downloads and on Itunes. All three albums and all their single A and B sides can be downloaded.

  • Beware!

Not all Idle Race recordings were made with Jeff Lynne.

The Idle Race recorded and released another album and some singles with replacement after Jeff Lynne left to join The Move. "In The Summertime" is one of those recordings

  • <333333

    I love this

    <3333333

  • Nice to hear Jeff Lynne pre-Move/ELO on vocals.

  • does anyone no were i can download this song

  • Go to Amazon downloads or I tunes. All tracks are available.

  • does any one know any other bands similar to this?

  • I think The Beatles. But The Idle was more radical. Too bad they didn´t they had a success they would have deserved.

But Jeff Lynne overrated the audience.

This music was too much intelligent to the major audience to understand.

  • @m0ng0sk8ter It's probably silly to reply to a comment that's a year old, but maybe you or someone else who's interested will see it...

Off the top of my head, I'd recommend the album "We Are Ever So Clean" by Blossom Toes, released in 1967, I believe. Fun, whimsical songs, some with a heavier edge; definitely worth a listen. Hope that helps. :)

  • Haven't heard this for years - bought it after I saw them at Paisley Tech in 69 or 70. Thanks for posting!

  • what are the chords?

  • anyone know the chords

  • Back to the Story I bought this 2cd set after hearing them on radio 2 sound of the sixties last year. A good buy I am sure.

  • What is this genre of music?

  • psychedelia

  • Late 60s early 70s UK pop

  • if only good music likes this was still around :[

  • yeah i like this kind of music :) no rap:(

  • great band !! But its so unknown

  • where can i download this song its fuckin awesome!!!

    ;)

it also goes great with the richie jackson skate video

  • its on a cd psych compliation "nuggets 2" the british one.

  • I saw the Idle Race in 1969 at Chelmsford and they were bloody brilliant! Played this but what stands out (after all these years!) was the amazing improvised version of T.Rex's 'Deborah' that seemed to go on for ages and was their final number. My first ever gig!

  • I never saw them oh i wish i had seen them do Deborah what a great memory to have.

  • Dear elofan567, thanks for your reply - i always think first gigs must leave an impact, but the idle race were truly excellent. Jeff Lynne was very much in control...Hearing DoBA again is there a tiny bit of 'Wild Tiger Woman' in there too? Thanks for your enthusiasm and all the brilliant posts! Pete H

  • i have never seen idle race live

but i know a person who has clips

    of them live

    wait and see...

  • Oh now those id love to see!!

  • Well that´s true !

But he´s now in business the next two

weeks. But after that i´m doing my best.

  • @Hicksie52 wish I was there too - I love this great pre ELO band only ever had their records though from the eighties compilation. has every 7" a & b sides. At one stage they where touted to be bigger than the Beatles

  • @Hicksie52 listened to this brilliant gem twice - it's now on my favourites & thanks for reminding me of something I love. Idle Race possibly the best band from the era that didn't go anywhere.

  • @tatunkha Nice to hear from you! I remember thinking when it was announced that Jeff Lynne was joining The Move: "Something brilliant's going to happen" And it did...It is so easy to re-write the musical history of the time in favour of the big guns, but the Wood-Lynne 'axis' produced some truly brilliant (and underated) music. I think Birmingham's contribution to the period has suffered at the hands of London and Liverpool! It is so significant that George Harrison worked with JL for so long!

  • roy woods was in it when it was the nightriders but left by the time they changed their name to idle race

  • am i the nly one who thinks that queens of the stneage may have been influenced by them? this song especially makes me think so

  • what a gnarly song.

  • Saw the Idle Race in Paisley Tech in 1969/1970 - terrific - but lived up to their name. So much talent but very lackadaisical on stage. ELO in mid 70s (Newcastle Poly) were a different story. Still, Skeleton on the roundabout remains my favourite single of all time

  • Were these lads a Roy Woods franchise ?

  • yeah skateboarding !

    very good sond

  • this song is on the richie jackson skate video! amazing song!

  • I think Knockin Nails in My House is better.

Both contains much to listen. But Knockin

is more successful in this in this area.

  • i grew up with these but really nice to hear again ..my dad was in the idle race

  • What was yor Dads name?

  • Yeah, what was your dad's name?!!

  • 1969 actually!

  • oops so it is, ive corrected it now thanks for pointing it out.

  • I´m sorry if I´m rude. The portrait of

these five guys was the Idle Race after

Jeff Lynne went to the Move.

    But a great song !

  • great song

  • Heard this one Richie Jackson video like many others, sick awesome skater, bomb ass fucking song! :O

  • eeerrrr..I agree (i think)

  • whay an amazing song ! it just makes you relax and be happy :)

  • Fabulous creative pop song..Thanks for uploading

  • glad to see so many jeff fans on youtube

    elo still rules!!

  • A prime example of Jeff Lynne's genius!

There are two different versions of this

    great song!

  • love this, heard it on richie jackson's skateboard part on death skateboards - escape from boredom

  • Great song and video.

  • oh yeah, i heard this song 1st on richie jacksons vid too, Hes an awesome skater skating to an awesome song. It sounds good for him too skate to, too

  • Always into anything ELO then heard this on Richie jackson skate vid part. Amazing!

  • awesome song!!

  • IDLE RACE = E.L.O. MINUS BOMBAST

  • First heard this one on the Nuggets 2 box set and have been an Idle Race fan ever since! (I've already been a Jeff Lynne fan for a long, long time).

  • I love this song.

  • Notice the little snippet of what would later morph into "Turn To Stone" at 1:53.

  • Fantastic. I've never thought I would hear yet another Jeff's early song. I've thought I knew them all. Nice surprise.
