I'm a Downey resident, I moved to Downey with my family in the summer of 1984. Today, we all just got back from the new Bob's Big Boy that is now sitting in the place that once was Johnny's Broiler. It's FANTASTIC! It's doing major business, and has a car hop and everything! It's so nice to have a Bob's Big Boy in Downey once again and nice to have the "spirit" of Johnny's Broiler living on through Bob's sitting there in it's place.
They started the demolition about 3 PM & the police were called immediately but they didn't come for a couple hours, why?City wanted a strip mall that would generate more money? The man had applied for permits & been denied a few months earlier. They knew the public would never support demolishing it,so they found another way.
Downey doesn't need a strip mall. Stonewood's right down the street, and just the same distance in the opposite direction, the city of South Gate is building a huge outdoor mall that's supposed to rival The Block in Anaheim. The story I heard was that the new owner of the property wanted it torn down to put something in its place (most likely a fast food joint), and called in the demolition prior to acquiring the permits, and it's been in a heated legal battle since. Just the word around town.
Don't let people tell you how great this place was. It was a dreadful dump for most of it's existence. The property owner/leasee wanted to build something decent on the lot, and some people just can't get over it. I would like to go and picket at their houses when they decide next to redo their flower beds or add an upstairs and tell them to STOP! and HOW DARE YOU CHANGE YOUR PROPERTY! "Crime" my foot! Technically a crime, but about as serious as exceeding a parking time limit.
