still not as bad as the first time i cleaned out the heat sink that came with my old pentium d 2.8ghz dual core xD it was collectiong dust for 4 years
and thats why i take my fan off my heatsync every few months and take a vacume and toothbrush to the thing and really get that dust off. now my pc runs at anywhere between 79F to 120F.
average computer doing its job.... filtering your house for you, that could have been in your lungs. thats why people should have a computer in every room
And this, people, is why you buy a can of air and blow the dust out of your computer every 6 months. (Keep a vacuum cleaner on near it to suck up all the dust you blow out of course ;) just a vacuum doesn't do the job as a can of air does)
Something similar happened to my laptop whilst I was at uni a few years ago. Turns out that because I was such a dirty bastard and smoking about 20 cigarettes a day in my dorm room for about 6 months, the smoke had made the dusty air worse and had clogged up inside the GPU fan grill!
Pulled a shit load of that stuff out of it, and the laptop was fine, no more overheating when using high graphics programs :P
my am2 heatsink was just as bad, my question is why does ati make such shitty heatsinks? i havent had a pet in 6 years.. and i defiantly have cleaned it scince then.
atleast you fan was still operational, a freind of mine had similiar problems but his dust killed his GraphicCard fan so he runs it without cooling into overheat ...
this happend to my sister's old computer. the fur from the animals clogged the heatsink causing the processor to overheat and shutdown the system. cleaned it and it worked like new.
@RATMAN775 I don't think so, this dust looks like it have been there because of the air flow of the fan, not because dust fell on it, you can see it's compact!
This brings back memories. My old Socket A got like this, new paste and swiping a credit card through several times did some good. Just don't give it your pin, he will eat your money.
best thing is to clean it every few month. have the case fans blowing air in 1 side out the other in a loop. keeps the fan blowing down on the cpu less dust free makes a diffrence but not a lot or get a watercooling setup and a decent case with dust filters.
I reccomend using a Que tip and scrape the dust off then run under cold water then pat dry with towel then use a blow/hair dryer put on hot and dry out the water in between the rails
