OK, I'm, from Louisiana, raised on this kind of music by my older siblings, have seen Cowboy Mouth I don;'t know how many times live, HOW THE HELL DID I NOT KNOW JTG WAS IN BOTH BANDS?
In the early years of MTV, this was an often played song and although it never became a hit it had everything anyone could want from the collection of garage-bands that had MTV to thank for their brief stardom. Sure the lyrics are incoherent, but that's what makes a garage band good (think "Louie, Louie" by the Kingsmen). Very little history about the Red Rockers who seemed to have drifted into obscurity down on the Bayou within a year or so of this offering. An "Essential Eighties".
hmmm people in New Orleans (N' Awlins as the tourist try to pronounce like locals) sound like people from New York - sort of Brooklyn sounding - such as the "Yats" - those are people that grew up in the lower 9th ward (nyt ward) where room sounds like rum - its like saying people that live in Manchester have a NW accent and therefore sound like people from Liverpool
@Tamastara Because the lead singer grew up in New Orleans, I suspect that his southern Louisiana accent is to blame for this. I really shouldn't be laughing at him, because I speak English with a heavy Russian accent. I "massacre" the pronunciation of English words all the time. LOL
the hair, the gel, the attire, the shoes matching black coats were just the never fading memories of new waves...and i'm one of all this stuffs!!! new wave is cool!!!!
@jph0917 You can still be a one-hit wonder even you never had a top 40 hit. The Waitresses ''I Know what Boys Like'' peaked at #62 and they were still able to get recognition for the song. Men Without Hats who had the #1 hit ''Safety Dance'' had another top 40 hit called ''Pop Goes the World'' (#18) and they're stilled labeled as a one hit wonder. A one hit wonder is about that one song people associate you with regardless of chart success. Either you're hit or a miss.
@PopCulture20 - Good Answer! I asked the question to see how many different opinions I would get. Not many. Couple of points - Safety Dance did not hit #1, it peaked at #3 behind Billy Joel (Tell Her About It) and Michael Sembello (Maniac) in Sept of 1983. Billboard chart researcher, Joel Whitburn & columnist Fred Bronson, have published several reference books on the Billboard Charts. The official definition of a One Hit Wonder is an act that hit the charts with One and Only One record.
@jph0917 Oh yeah Men Without Hats did peak at #3 with Safety Dance & I love Joel Whitburn books. I'm trying order his Dance/Club Chart addition because there some dance songs that I never knew existed and they are so good.
@REMONSTER Yeah, I'm sure he built himself a time machine, went forward a few years, stole the chops from the Red Rockers, went back and built a career spanning three plus decades. I'm sure in no way was it the other way around.
Red Rockers still ROCK!! Check out lead singer John Thomas Griffith who is now guitarist for Cowboy Mouth who also ROCK!!! Especially in their LIVE shows!
Was not the best effort, but always a classic to me. Still enjoy listening to the group these years later. Brings back some great memories of friends from that time.
The way the singer throws in another syllable and holds "Chi-na" just a bit longer at 1:47 was always my favorite part of this song. It's a tad off the beat and it works perfectly. Little things like that make great songs even better.
@ganglionable Stop spreading your poison. People get hurt when 'people' like you make homophobic remarks. There's no earthly reason to post such things. Unless you realized you're gay and can't handle it. Just go away.
Got a good laugh. Proved to my cute 11 year-old daughter... that that adorable little hat and vest combo was NOT the original creation of the Jonas Brothers... and who ever else. Lesson: there is nothing new, just a new audience for it. LOVE THIS SONG!
Yeah, an anthem (and very strange too!) but ya gotta luv the guitarist w/the black hat on & the Chinese girls smiling. These guys are from New Orleans & environs and really are Good as Gold! Next, on to Gary Myric, "Message Is You"...
Current favorite.
