  • The awkward moment when i'm singing this song at school, and my friend asks if it's a hipster song. :/

  • I've been country all my life but I grew up in town where being country wasn't cool but I didn't care I did my own thing and didn't care what anything thought or said about me. And then country became cool when I hit high school and thats when everyone became fake like they've been country all their life or something. No, no sweetheart I was the ONLY one to stay true to my roots!

  • On November 5, 2007, Barbara Mandrell, along with Vince Gill and Rodney Crowell, was awarded a star on Nashville's Walk of Fame. On May 17, 2009, she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame along with Roy Clark and Charlie McCoy. This is the latest info on her that I could find.

  • jeeze whatever happened to Barbara?

  • @bosun1724 After he auto accident in the mid 80's her career never picked up steam again. She said in an interview then that when the fans stopped wanting her music she would quit and she did. She sold her instruments and never has sang in public since 1992. What a loss of of a great entertainer.

  • @ridrime64

:( she is and was awesome. I just watched a Johnny Cash Bio on TV...he felt the same way. And Vince Gill too...but I always thought Johnny Cash, Vince Gill and Barbara Mandrell as AWESOME!!!!! If they had new CDs I would buy them.

  • some things should always stay the same!! music had heart... wish it still did . an amazing musician who could play anything she picked up and belt it out with heart!

  • lovin it :)

  • country has always been cool to me,obviously still listen to it,ty!!!

  • you spelled "wasn't" wrong. Cool.

  • Barbara ROCKS!!!!!

  • She was kool!!!!!!!

  • I really wish I was here for this..I was born in 94 and man, I never had music like this on the radio. Thank god for ma and pa's tapes and records ;)

  • i remember when george jones surprised her while she was singing this song, great memories

  • wow ! she is cool !!

  • this song made me proud all through high school cause I was teased about my love of country music among other things. This song made me feel cool.

  • does anyone have video of barbera mandrell singing i was country when counrty wasn't cool with george jones joining in the middle of the song. it aired on tnn in the 80's

  • Mother Creator

    ~~ Loves you ~~

  • This song came out back when "country was cool."

  • Straight-Legged Levi's I called 'em stove pipes. I grew up in the 60's and 70's. If you know who Red Sovine and Johnny Carson were then you know this. Welcome home Country Music! and let's just pretend that we all grew up in the 60's and Charlie Pride was something we could only dream of. WE WERE COOL WHEN COOL WAS COOL. Nice Tune!

  • the only thing country about this song is the steel guitar in the background...and maybe that jacket...

  • Country music was better before it was "cool" to be country.

  • love Barbara Mandrell

  • she is my role model and im related 2 her so its awesome

  • so much for nostalgia, this song just seems really silly to me now.

  • How many of you got to watch the Mandrell Sisters on TV. I am dating myself, but I WAS country when country wasn't cool.

  • Mother Creator

    ~~ Loves you ~~

  • My uncle told me of his chance meeting of Barbara on an airline flight and sat next to her. He told me she was one of the best people he ever met in his life.

  • I never missed her TV show. What a class act! She couldn't keep up the pace of having a weekly show.

  • i just watched a old home movie from when i was a baby and barbara mandrell was holding me and my mom was talking to her and then she kissed me on the face i dont remember any of it

  • I´m from Austria, I discovered country music when I started western riding in the 80´s, and I really was the only teenager in school who listened to that kind of music! So I totally identify with this song! I love it!

  • AMEN!!!! :D

  • Putting peanuts in your coke is like eating french fries with a milk shake, it was about the salt and the sugar tasting good together. It's an old country thing people used to do.

  • I don't get the peanuts in the Coke thing still.

  • @mrsbelcher1987 It was a common thing they did back in those days put peanuts in their coke. It was a fad thing. That was the main snack at drive in theatre to buy a coke and peanuts and somehow they got the idea to just put the peanuts floating in their cokes and drank it like that. Hard to really explain. I just kind of heard about it and similar to how people put dif things in various foods just because it is fun or tastes good.

  • I went to her mansion!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This describes me! Basically everything she mentions in the song is me. xD Haha! I love this song <3

  • I'm fifteen and have loved this woman's music since I was old enough to understand the words.

  • this rite wyTE fageT.......

  • I remember her playing at our fair when I was a little girl. I was 4 and she shook my dirty hand. One of my favorite songs ever.

  • Coke and peanuts! HELL YES im 16 and me and my bestfriend are the only two hicks at our school. Gotta love it :) Everyone makes fun of me when i do coke and peanuts!

  • Streisand and Mandrell are my everyday inspirations. ♥ I just turned sixteen, and got an autograph from Barbara Mandrell, <3 My life is made;(: ♥

  • Now i swear this is me 120%...i remember waring my cowboy boots back in 6th and below and now everybody is that here in the 9th grade its funny how true this song is:)

  • absolutly home grown would listen to anything else

  • whats with "putting peanuts in my coke"?

  • @haleyflora1234 kinda threw me with that one but I think she said putting peanuts in her coat. but if I am wrong I can hardly wait to hear why peanuts would go in a coke.

  • @haleyflora1234 back in the 50's and 60's I never drank a coke without putting peanuts in the bottle,,, guess it was southern thing... I thought everyone used to do that !!!!!!

  • @courtcol but why? flavour thing or?

  • @123456789mischief --- yea, really good, the salt in the peanuts and the coke have a addictive taste have to use the salty peanuts that come in real small clear wrappers (for about 50 cents) made by toms or lance company-- you need to try it... also has to be a 6 1/2 ounce coke ------- in the bottle

  • @courtcol well there ya go! I'll give it a try and get back to you on it. Thanks for the input.

  • I love Barbara she was my idol. We miss her and will always love her!

  • I did and still do put peanuts in my Coke. People think I'm crazy and just laugh.

  • John Rich owns her house now, it is awesome, she is an fabulous singer and entertainer, she retired way too early!!!!

  • Country is not all that bad she sure has a lot of class

  • Classy lady!

  • Okay sorry

  • @Mattzarkovich Yup call me ignorant for being country and proud of it. Your statistics don't mean shit to me by the way. Talk shit about country being "un-cool" but when you eat your breakfast in the morning, thank a farmer. When you cover up with a blanket at night, thank a farmer. When you buy "cool" clothes, thank a damn farmer. You wouldn't have half the shit you do if it weren't for farmers. And guess what? Farmers are country. That's a fact buddy.

  • @RNFarmer94 Dude im not making fun of country i stated a fact i like country or why else would i search this song. I never said country was bad its just proven that its not popular or cool. Im in high school and everyone unfortunately makes fun of country thus showing its uncool. Personally i like listening to country artists such as, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, The Oak ridge Boys, Alabama, Josh Turner, and many more.

  • Comment removed

  • @Mattzarkovich Cooler than whatever the fuck you are!

  • @RNFarmer94 lol thats such a great comment I'm sorry but incorrect information doesn't make me feel bad. Also, my statement is true by the way its not intended to offend someone obviously your to ignorant to realize that. Country isn't cool look at music statistics which states that Hip-Hop, Rap, and Pop is more popular then country music thus proving county isn't cool. If you like county and you think its "cool" then good for you its a matter of personal preferences, and opinions. Bye

  • We are American when American isn't cool... Never give up! Our new Indepence from a hyphenated America is the American-American: Diversity without Division Movement! Spread the Word... Freedom is catching....

  • @theoriginalamerican and stop buying that foreign shit. thats your job going to china.

  • Was this recorded at the Roy Acuff Theatre or somewhere there around the "then" Opryland Amusement Park??? Does anyone know? I think this is the recording that I went to @ age 12 and I believe I have pic of her in that outfit from that night (polaroid lol) and her autograph on it .... I'll be checking on that very soon!

  • One of the best songs ever! Barbara is a great singer.

  • as David Allen Coe once said ... If that ain't country I'll kiss your ass

  • I was country when my friends were all rock n roll! that was 40 years ago... still country!!!

  • What are the odds of Barbara Mandrell singing a cross over duet with Ozzy Osbourne?????

  • When country was country music then.

  • I am Country in a State where Country isn't cool (Brooklyn, NY). I LOVE Country Music! Country Music is my FAVORITE genre of music and it will ALWAYS be that way EVEN if they're destroying Country Music with this NEW Teeny Country-Pop CRAP! Hopefully it's a phaze that'll SOON pass and REAL authentic Country Music will return. :)

  • Ironically, she did this song in the middle of her pop records!

  • She's so pretty and very talented, love all her songs

  • what great memories....this is the country music I grew up on. Love it and love her!! Thanks for posting.

  • Classy Lady

  • i wasn't listening to country music like dat but when i met this nice country gurl frum tennessee and she always used to play this song and the song sounds very good and i haven't left tennessee yet.

  • Barbara and Donna Mills look alot alike

  • She was country when country SUCKED and people were listening to The Beatlles, The Who, and Led Zepplin, smokin' weed and trippin' on acid!

  • @guitars71 - she was country, when artists were selling gold and platinum albums in an age when nobody would admit they listened to country. While you were listening to garbage and stoned out of your mind she was touring the Country singing to a wonderful audience of LIFE LONG dedicated fans.

  • @KLUNKET Hummm! Let's see? I'm 39! This women was big around 1980? '82? Anyway, that would have made me around 10 or 11. Now, what kind of access to drugs do you think an 11 year old has to get stoned, while listening to music from rock artists who made it into the rock'n'roll hall of fame and are still around and touring the globe, today? I bet Gene Simmons from Kiss, has sold more solo albums from his solo project, than this hillbilly chick from hickville has, her entire career!

  • @guitars71 Taste is subjective. I dont care how many albums any band or singer has sold, so long as I enjoy their music. One of my favorite metal bands, Amon Amarth has sold less albums then say, Green Day but I think they are way better than Green Day. Again, taste varies.

  • @PsychoKitty My favorite band is Godsmack, but, MTV, VH1, Most of FM radio, and even this year's superbowl halftime show, thinks it should be I should be listening to bands like, The Black Eyed Peas, just 'cause they're more popular around the world! Sully Erna may not be be on MTV, VH1, or even take part in a halftime show, but I think Godsmack is a far way better band than the Black Eyed Peas! That's my own opinion!

  • @KLUNKET Not to put down country music. It's great music with tons of talented artists and I'm a fan of Willie Nelson and Toby Keith, but I think today's country is far more popular and sounds better, than country from the 80's! And alot of today's country music is crossing over into rock'n'roll, with artists like Kid Rock, Steven Tyler who sang on stage with Willie Nelson, and Led Zeppelin's, Robert Plant who recently won a CMA award with Allison Krauss

  • Actually folks, she is the most beautiful woman in the world.

  • Barbara was the CREATOR of being intimate w/ the audience,,, none before her and hardly ANYONE since her aside from Reba and Jennifer Nettles, truly engage the audience,,, there is a sparkle in her eye... she KNOWS her stuff and can wink, smile, shake hands all while singing.. Women today are so worried about the words and being serious,,,, side note, i wish youtube would filter double posts of the same footage...

  • Whenever the Mandrell sisters would come on tv my ma would cue and point to me and have me sing with her and my little sister....This is one of the many of them and its so true...I was country when country wasn't cool.....

  • @amiablerain love it :)

  • This little cutey has always been a favorite

  • What a living Doll!

  • This song sure brings back alot of memories. Sitting in the car a the DRIVE IN MOVIES!! and listening to Barbra sing this song. That was me... I am a country girl. I thing that she is one of the best that has ever been. I wish that she would come back,

  • the best...

  • I miss my youth....

  • @mikebcnu2 LOL. I was just thinking the exact same thing. Barbara Mandrell was hugely popular when I was in my teens. It almost depresses me to see all these shows now. I appreciate them being posted on youtube but it's a bit of a mind f-ck seeing my childhood and teens relegated to nostalgia. To me it all seems like it happened just a few minutes ago

  • It's called a class act. You younger women take notes!

  • she is amazing...the next videoim watching is erry reed and her...love em all!!!

  • what a all american beauty

  • amazing

  • LOL the best part, when she talks and sits down on the steps and she points to the crowd, "they called us country bumpkin for sticken to our roots"

  • I'm 13 and she's one of my favorites. Much better than Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood. One of my role models :)

  • @1997LeAnn haha of course you say that leon XD

P.S. my mom knows every word to this song since she was in 1st grade :P

  • @1997LeAnn Good for you you obviously have a higher IQ than most girls your age !!!

  • @84jgk what the heck does taste in music have to do with IQ???

  • @1997LeAnn

Great that you like her. She plays more instruments than I can name. Why do you have to denigrate the younger talent? They are great too.

  • great song that brings back memories of real country music.

  • I love her! She is a REAL role model!

  • I miss the REAL country!

  • Barbara's Doing great and has a beautiful rose garden at her home that she has created. She's an amazing person and I'm glad to call her my friend. She is definitely an icon in Country Music and the Entertainment Industry in general.

  • Where is he.. I heard him but he wasn't on cam... wheres the one with him on cam

  • George jones Ant in there O !!! hell no we cant have that. lol

  • I will always remeber when i first heard this song, and it will always be special to me, especially since this is the theme of my life<3

  • What is Barbara Mandrell doing now ?

  • The greatest country entertainer that ever graced Nashville! There were other great singers (I'm not blinded by just her good looks) but by far - the most versatile performer in country. If it had strings she could play it - if it had lyrics - she could sing it. I never got to meet Barbara - but if it was one of those Make a Wish things - she'd be my choice! Jimmy Mac - Las Vegas.

  • For MY boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • barbara is an icon !

  • I love her!!!

  • what ever happened to em?

  • Yep, two of us!

  • I MISS BARBARA!

  • Barbara...."Take this love"...by Jeff and Jeff....was written for you!

  • Hey! where's George?

  • beautiful!!! thats it.

  • todays "entertainers" would have changed their outfits at least 6 times during this one song

  • @MrStitch105 Thats for sure!!. She doesnt need all the stage show effects. Just listening to her sing is better than all the stuff they do today to try and entertain. She's just there by herself and you could listen to her sing and not get bored.

  • George tells a story about one of these shows in his book "I Lived to Tell it All" where he was supposed to come out & sing his line in this song with Barbara, and he was so drunk his manager told the producers he couldn't do it, but no one told Barbara. She walked down the stairs to his seat so he could sing the line and he has no idea what came out of his mouth because he was so messed up. It's supposedly on tape somewhere and I would love to see it.

  • good times, good lyrics, and good classy people, what a great time in life.

  • I'm sry but I godda

  • I was in love with her

  • And she still is.....and had her own miracle to share with the world.

  • She is so fine!!! Absolutely gorgeous.

  • Does anyone have this song where George Jones come out. If so can you post it

  • this is mine and my uncle jrs girlfriends song love u misty and uncle jr

  • what a great song and and such a classy lady just think we almost lost her.

  • Brings back some serious memories.

  • Hit #1 in Billboard, Jul. '81. Hope Barbara's wisely quit smokin' by now. Bad Christian to be a tobacco smoker, right, gang? God bless!

  • i have always love her,, but i for got about her until 2 today ago i was with my 19 yr daugher.

  • round here they put peanuts in Pepsi .. so we're at War!!

j/k - so talented. Love Barbara.

  • this is one of my choir songs!

  • yea, i was born in73, always loved this era of music.. brings back fond memories of my youth and my dad.. makes me miss him..

  • barbara is from california and definitely not country by birth. i think her point here is that she grew up with all her friends being into rock music and she liked country. it wasn't cool back when the beatles ruled. it's easy to be a sheep, it's much harder to do your own thing.

  • @eydie57 If ya actually know where Barbara Mandrell is from she is actually from Houston,Texas but she moved to California when she was like ten years old.

    Dancefreack16.

  • My favorite singer of all time!

  • i was so country when it wasnt coool.lol

  • im 14.

And I think this Is One of the BEST songs Ever,
