People calling attention to Dillion being too pretty for the role or it being too hollywood need to be corrected on a few things. First: while the movie is based in LA, it isn't even shot there. In fact, it was shot in Europe. Secondly, this is about Bukowski's formative years. When most people think of Bukowski they think of him post 1950s and it was then that he started to look ridiculously gruff. Third: Anyone who thinks Lily Taylor was miscast and/or too attractive should hang themselves.
I'm not so familiar with Bukowski, but I enjoyed this film tremendously. Matt gave a great performance and he's got a good voice for narration. The film's meandering style was soothing and visually it had a soft glow like a drunken memory.
I'll definitely seek out Bukowski's work now that I've seen this and I may even give Barfly a try.
Be it you not liking Rourke or for the fact that Dillon did it closer to Bukowski himself, fact is these are both great films. I mean christ, Rourke gives an amazing performance and it was Bukowski's screenplay. Different movies of course, but both good.
barfly was trash....even bukowski disowned it before he died......mickey rourke had his head up his ass so much that he refused to rehearse or spend any time with Buk to get down his mannerisms.....Rourke ruined what should have been an amazing movie.....thankfully, Matt Dillon did his research and erased the mistakes of Rourke...i snapped my copy of barfly in half after the first viewing, just to show Buk some respect. Fuck Mickey Rourke.
You do realise you are talking about Mickey Rourke in the 80s? C'mon, of course he was being an arsehole...but surely Buk would have paid much the same credit. I just think that at first glance Barfly is sparse, slow and lacking subtlety...But it grew on me after a while, and there are messages there which Dillon unfortunately didn't get round to. Make no mistake, I love both and I think it was a bit mad you snapping your disc up. But whatever, its your cash,
i'm not talking about "would have." Bukowski litterally disowned the movie after it came out. He was ashamed of it and chose to never work with hollywood again. If Bukowski says its trash, its trash. AND HE DID MANY TIMES......HIS WIFE STILL SAYS IT TO THIS DAY. Barfly is an insult to Buk and his style of writing.
I realise Buk was ashamed of selling out for cash, but just because I don't think it was a bad film means I'm dancing on his grave? Get over it mate, I personally like a film which I previously thought was bad. Climb out of Bukowski's opinions and be objectiv about the situation, if you don't like it - fine; just don't try and lecture me on it.
This is a great film, really. If you've seen Bukowski himself, you would see that Dillon did a great job in the part of Chinaski. I thought Rourke had too much Rourke in the part. I also like the more subtle humor of Factotum.
I can't wait for the day that they make a movie from bukowski's POST OFFICE. That book was hilarious. Apparently they couldn't get the rights to do it, they wanted to make a movie from that book before FACTOTUM.
my ass he was better than Rourke. As decent a job as i think Dillon did, Rourke's performance blows him out of the water. Aside from everything else, it was hard to buy into their roles when Dillon and his co-star looked like they both walked out of a fitness world. Rourke put on major weight to play the role, looked much better as a bum, and his acting was a LOT BETTER than Dillon. Anyhow, kudos to the both of them. Also, Barfly had a lot more funny scenes and lines.
Matt Dillon is the actor of the perfect silences (in "Drugstore Cowboy" we have another extraordinary exemplo) as well as when he has to say something deep and profound like he does in the last scene of this great movie. Noboby could have ever done it better than him.
GREAT MOVIE . WOW
