Standard ten pound notes were issued in the mid 1700s and during Brummell's golden years on the London scene, £1, £2 and £5 notes were in use. In Regency times, the phrase "a roll of soft" was used to describe a wad of banknotes. So now you know! :-D
How interesting. I suspect that the idea was to save the trouble of carrying gold coins. There were undoubtedly many attempts of forgeries. These notes look pretty primitive.
