You don't fight with honor.... He didn't fight with honor? He didn't seem to be planning on fighting until she yelled at him, women... You can never please them
The handled this fight the wrong way. Bronn opens himself up for a lunge with every merry skip backwards. At least make him keep his sword up! I'm no swordsman, but I know you never let your guard down, even if your only intention is to move out of the way.
@DragonbornGamer im not sure how they "handled this fight the wrong way." it seems they emphasize bronn's character and wiles pretty well. seems like bronn's personal, unorthodox, loose fighting style
@StopFlaggingVideos What I meant was Bronn should have kept his sword up. No man with a grain of intelligence would let his guard down, even if all he wanted to do was get out of the way. You saw yourself how close Ser Vardis' sword was to his neck. Tell me how not protecting yourself is smart.
@DragonbornGamer Basically, you're right, keeping your sword up increase your defense, and you will able to react faster to strikes, but there is a very useful stance called "the foul"... Bronn used something like this. It is really good for example against a hawk stance..
@saghistick True as that may be, Bronn shouldn't have taken any risks, while the "foul" may be a real stance, Bronn is a sellsword, and has no need for fancy stances so long as he stays alive (and wins).
@DragonbornGamer Fencing is not about being fancy... these are quite necessary things, that even a sellsword has to know, if he wants to stay alive. Bronn should knew that in fair combat his opponent may has a greater chance to win. In Westeros duels are fought in heavy armor. Bronn weared a light armor and his plan was to tire Ser Vardis. The way he holded his sword maybe it's not a regular "foul" but had a purpose not else but to provoke Vardis to rush.
@Kamamuracz lol how does a peasant move? also, giant swords are heavy. choreography here is better than the jaime/ned fight, though the point above about not guarding is a good one.
It's heavy. Bronn's strategy was to wear down his opponent by simply parrying and dodging. The shield would have impeded him more than it would have helped him.
@TheJboy88 Nope he's not just a sell sword. He's a former man of the Night's Watch. Those guys will take any knight any time. They fight by one rule, kill the opposition.
@TheJboy88 Thats only if they catch you sir ;) remember the southern lords don't care nearly as much, and they probably wouldn't know him from sin. And Lady Catelyn wouldn't either. he deserted a long time in the past, or so it was hinted at. Hence why he won't travel north anymore. because certain people still might remember him. and that wouldn't end well at all.
@Stigmatainmypants He named his son liked that to make funn of him Lady Tanda s doghter was raped by a mob in King s Landing at first Bronn s son was to be named Tywin Cersey obgiected of course
@alexpascu2785 See, i never got the sense that it was to mock Tyrion. I think it was meant to mock Cersei, but also in a backwards way it pays tribute to Tyrion. I suppose it could be debated, but I think Bronn actually did understand how much he owed to Tyrion.
@Stigmatainmypants In the Feast of Crows Bronn shous his face when Tyrion neded him the most Cersey used him and rat had no problem whit it in fact he stated even from the begining that he was not his friend
yea I wrote a report about this show and my only "big" complaint about it were the not-so-finesse fight scenes. I mean I understand it's not an action show but an elaborate fight scene here and there wouldn't be so bad. I say this because I'm kinda worried about how they do battles when they reach parts like Fist of the First Men or any other battle beyond the wall
Actually, this is how real fights look when using swords armor. The highly choreographed moves we see in films are VERY unrealistic. All that spinning, twirling, and stuff looks cool but in the end swordplay is about feints, guards, side-steps, and just being able to hold out against your opponent long enough to find an opening. Combine that with heavy armor and the physical demands of hand-to-hand combat and the fights in GoT make a lot more sense.
@PenTheMighty Not true, real fights are more desperate and fast than this. If sir had adrenaline flowing (which, in the film version he obviously didnt) he would have been very swift and highly accurate, aswell as having an ultra-fast reaction time. Argue all you want that this doesnt happen but you are wrong (adrenaline turns humans into killing machines) and it would be especially so in trained fighters. Also, sir's armour doesnt fucking work at any point in this scene.
@PenTheMighty Also, sir behaves in a moronic fashion in this. Knights are indoctrined and squired from an early age, and his actions in this scene show amateurish skills at best.
@ShadowSonic2 He ran around the hall, threw stuff at Valdis' way. While Valdis fought like a knight, Bronn fought like a merc. It was fair fight but not knightly, perhaps that's why she said, he fought without honor.
@ShadowSonic2 He agrees cause its true. "Honor" implies fighting by the knight's code, hacking at each other till one guy dies. Bronn fought like a man of the Night's Watch (Spoiler, that was why he'd been north of the wall) They have no rules except one. Kill the opponent. No code of honor involved. Bronn didn't kill Vardis, Vardis killed himself by fighting by a code of honor that obviously wasn't being followed by his opponent. Honor is a silly precept in such a fight.
@drizzt102 But he still fought fair. He used no hidden weapons, or poisons or anything. He just used his brain to realize that he was better off without armor and should wait until the enemy was no longer at full strength. That still seems pretty fair and not dishonorable to me. Maybe it's just a philosophy to think less of the concept of "Honor" when you're a Merc or something.
Bronn: "Look I win! Now I'll kill your best man! >:D"
*prepares to stab Vardis, then drops the sword onto the ground and helps him stand up*
"Good game, bro. But I won, and I even let you live. So, it's over, yeah? :D"
Ser Vardis shouldn't have had to die. :( He was one of the more honorable knights of the Vale. And when Bronn killed him I was like, "shit they're not gonna let this go are they?"
@fl333r Bronn is harsh yes but Lady Arryn is even harsher, and insane to boot. He's a sellsword, he only kills for the people who will pay him the most, and Tyrion fits that category. He just wanted to get it over with, not die, and get his gold
@knightd00b Yeah.. but if Lady Arryn was really mad, she might've ordered him killed anyway, so I thought that they would be executed anyways considering she hardly cared about appearance.
So I thought by just beating him, and not killing him, everybody wins :D
But seriously, yeah, you've a point. But Bronn was such a "in your face" about it with Vardis ;_;
@fl333r I think that's bc he was a very hard man and was disrespected by these knights who thought they were better than him. It gives him pleasure to publicly disgrace a trueborn knight, which he could never be. And the Vales words are "as high as honor", so double-crossing a Lanister in front of all those people could not have been hidden or gone unnoticed.
@fl333r Yeah I read the book before watching the series... and I was secretly hoping that Bronn would have spared him in the series. Especially after Bronn gives lady Arryn and Cat that look of "Thumbs up or thumbs down?"
You sure about that? I mean Bronn doesn't exactly fight fair which was evident in this fight (throwing candle holders and people into Vardis) where as drogo fights with honor. I think that would get drogo killed if anything.
@xmac000 my money would be on Bronn. They make this fight look more in Bronn's favour than in the book. In the book Vardis is mailed head to heel. Drogo is huge and powerful. Speed and lateral thinking would win out. Similar to Oberyn vs Gregor, Oberyn would have won if he wasn't so intent on goading the mountain and putting on a show. Bronn wouldn't put on a show.
@cotillion Bronn's just too smart, too wary, too dangerous really. Drogo is a dangerous man but he's used to fighting Dothraki who plunge in head first looking for blood. They're beastial. He'd lose his head fighting someone like Bronn who backs off, plays it safe and basically acts a coward. He'd rush in heedless wanting to crush this cowardly little man, and Bronn would open him up. Muscles don't stop steel.
@falsepod I doubt it, Bronn's technique only worked because his opponent was weighed down in armor and moved slower for it. Drogo wears little to no armor and is faster. "Muscles don't stop steel." Well that's good, because Drogo would have steel too.
@falsepod he didnt really try to evade that one, as u can see he just stood there and let him do it. Yes its a bloodrider read the books. Keep in mind that drogo has never been defeated in battle, and u think some random svordsman could beat him?
@Kaftarn maybe you should read the books. we don't know if he stood there and took it, because you don't see the fight in the book. he's injured before deanerys goes to him. and I do. I think that drogo would get pissed off that Bronn is backing off and being wary, he'd rush after being rope doped and get himself cut wide open. its not all about raw strength and power. its about wits. I feel that Bronn has Drogo down in that respect and that he's lure the kahl in and kill him,
@falsepod i didnt say that any of that was in the book, only that it was a bloodrider he faced. Drogo is not only one hell of a beefcake he´s also very skilled. Bronns method wouldn´t work on Drogo cuz he´s to good and i think there would only be a matter of time before Drogo caught Bronn if he tried to elude him.
@MrMadpenguin I'm not sure if this is a troll, because obv Jamie probably the most skilled swordsman in the books (not including selmy) but I do think Bronn is up there with him.
@falsepod That´s what I meant, Jaime is the current best swordsman. (You are right, Arstan might be near him, but he is a bit old so that kind of rules him out).
And while they are both better than Bronn, he could certainly put up a very good fight against either.
@falsepod I disagree.. Drogo was fast, strong and smart. Sure bronn is very skilled but the reason ser vardis got ass-raped in this fight is because he was winded from wearing the armor and swinging too much. According to the tv series, imo Drogo did just as well dodging Mago's attack as bronn did with ser vardis. BUT that IS just the tv series.
i love how bronn knocks him down grabs him.and just sort of looks around to see and hear the womans horror and than smiles before he butchers him.a true character of ice and fire.
@soljenn01 you have to remember that in the book, the fight is taking place from tyrion's perspective. When he sees a knight in full armor going against Bronn (who he doesn't know very well at the time) who has no armor, he sees Bronn at a big disadvantage from the get go.
@office467 Why would he be unskilled? Only a moron would choose an unvaluable AND unskilled fighter. So don't be a fucking tard like the costume designers and actors. The knight doesnt even make a sound the whole fight.
I always thought that Bronn was some arrogant, smiling bastard who would laugh even during a fight. And I also thought that Ser Vardis had this huge, shining armor and the finest weapons and shield.
@froogly I like everything about him ;D especially after I read the books... (there is one thing though, iI don't like they portrayed him with long hair... but that's personal preference i guess)
@TheBeastlyStudmuffin what im saying is this is weak fight. in any physcial one vs one activity you have to do the unexpected...but doing that casues alot of body movement.might get tierd. but im inshape... but in every one vs one sprt or anyting. everyone jus does what comes... trust me im osihfoasihfo boss.
I really hope the show includes the bad ass Bronn scenes that happen in book 4. You dont get to see them in the books but it is just an awesome Bronn moment.
The knight's armor made him slow and clumsy. Bronn was just using his opponent's handicap to his advantage by letting him wear himself out. That's just how fights are done.
Not to get to spoiler-y, but did anyone else shed a tear when you find out that Bronn names his son Tyrion? I know i did. Man i loved those 2 together.
@leftwinger84 In the books he was offered all that extra armour and refused! But yeah, based on the general code of chivalry him dashing about instead of charging forward to be skewered was 'less honourable'!!
bronn is meant to be younger than ser vardis.

@falsepod That´s what I meant, Jaime is the current best swordsman. (You are right, Arstan might be near him, but he is a bit old so that kind of rules him out).
And while they are both better than Bronn, he could certainly put up a very good fight against either.
MrMadpenguin 1 week ago
@falsepod Ya it sucks he leaves Tyrion
DOPOW9419 1 week ago
@falsepod I disagree.. Drogo was fast, strong and smart. Sure bronn is very skilled but the reason ser vardis got ass-raped in this fight is because he was winded from wearing the armor and swinging too much. According to the tv series, imo Drogo did just as well dodging Mago's attack as bronn did with ser vardis. BUT that IS just the tv series.

i love how bronn knocks him down grabs him.and just sort of looks around to see and hear the womans horror and than smiles before he butchers him.a true character of ice and fire.

This fight wasn't done very well compared to the book imo.
SODEMO2007 1 month ago
I always get nervous when I see this scene. It would be terrible for bronn if the other knight just took his time and didn't exert a lot of energy.

Liked the fight in the book better...made vardis way more skilled and dangerous...which made bronn's victory all the more impressive
soljenn01 1 month ago 21
@soljenn01
And also, it had more meaning, comparing it to (I forget) fighting Littlefinger!
lemansquattro 1 month ago
@soljenn01 you have to remember that in the book, the fight is taking place from tyrion's perspective. When he sees a knight in full armor going against Bronn (who he doesn't know very well at the time) who has no armor, he sees Bronn at a big disadvantage from the get go.
office467 2 weeks ago
@office467 In the book it takes place from Catelyn's perspective.
Lucazzy 2 weeks ago
@office467 Why would he be unskilled? Only a moron would choose an unvaluable AND unskilled fighter. So don't be a fucking tard like the costume designers and actors. The knight doesnt even make a sound the whole fight.
Pawnbroker00 2 weeks ago
@office467 Or atleast, an understandable and realistic sound.

I always thought that Bronn was some arrogant, smiling bastard who would laugh even during a fight. And I also thought that Ser Vardis had this huge, shining armor and the finest weapons and shield.

The knight's armor made him slow and clumsy. Bronn was just using his opponent's handicap to his advantage by letting him wear himself out. That's just how fights are done.

riiiight, so no helmet or shield and less armour is less honourable
leftwinger84 1 month ago
@leftwinger84 In the books he was offered all that extra armour and refused! But yeah, based on the general code of chivalry him dashing about instead of charging forward to be skewered was 'less honourable'!!
