the t-bone player would have done better to have just stayed on the floor rather than walk back up to his origin only to do an about face and walk back down to the floor.
this is coming from a guy that used to do this tune in the college band in the early 80's.
Yeah F minor to G7 It did sound good though! Great JOB!!!! It didn't slow down, most of the times when Tiger is played by a high school jazz band they tend to drag in the middle..
I really liked the solos. Very much. But your rhythm section is kind of lacking. I don't know if it's because they are so small or what, but the rhythm section is kind of boring, to put it bluntly.
Just to keep in theme, since everyone else is talking about tempo, my band is playing this right now and we go slightly faster than you guys. MAN UP! Haha. Just kidding, you guys are fantastic anyways.
If you listen to LaBarbera's recording on iTunes, the pace this band is playing is equivent to theirs. Sure, it's not easy to keep that kind of pace for a high school band, but think of Randy Pausch's encouragement of "failing gloriously" as opposed to not trying at all.
The tempo was a little too fast and it was not meant to be played this fast. The beginning was a little shaky but overall was pretty awesome. Horn players have some chops this is a very difficult tune to play...i played it about 10 years ago when I was in high school and this band would have blown us away. Good job guys!
If this is High School it's pretty impressive. I think the tempos too fast and you're having trouble holding it together. Overall the band is pretty good, but I'm pretty sure the director needs to have the hell slapped out of him for acting like that. Dude you direct a high school band not the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and I'm sure every audience you play for feels the same way.
We JUST got this song in today. Did ya'lls have all the original solos written on it with the chords above them? My director wants me to play Bill Watrous's solo note for note, that's gonna take some time.
man, listening to this recording brought back memories. i am the trombone player that played in this recording and to answer all of the posts about the tempo, yes we did mean to play it that fast! it was meant to be played that way. we did slow down throughout, but the intent was genuine. and i agree with someone else's post about public schools producing great talent. Pennsbury prides itself in having a great music program and I am thankful for that.
Wow, this is really good. I love the Tenor Sax solo (well, b/c I am a tenor sax :D!) The tempo is really fast, but you guys stayed with it, and it sounded really cool :)
Tempo is way to fast, but it slowed down- reason to take it slower.
Heaps of bands play this cause they see the pro version and wanna play it, but its waay too hard. Its the same with The Jazz Police, heaps of noobie bands playing the noobie version.
we played this this year in our middle school band. it wasnt easy, but it was definatly a watered down version. but instead of a trumpet solo, we made it a trombone :) thank you ms. bain
so i just played this at Disney and we won Superior. We changed it up a little. I played the trombone solo throughout the Tenor-to the end of the song.
There is no way in HELL that a Middle School could play this Awesome song. I did it in High Scool back in 92. This band played it fast but it was a little messy.
hate to breatk it to ya, but Middle Schools DO play it. We're playing it in our High School Jazz and so is our Middle School Jazz. they're two different versions though. makes it easier on the Middle Schoolers
Hoshit that's fast. It does sound like it's being rushed though, you're losing the latin feel. The trombonist had more creativity than the trumpet player, I think. Also, woulda been better if you had a flute =P
I disagree... the trumpet solo was not creative in the least. He managed to play high the whole time while minimizing any chance for a melody coming out in the entire thing.
For your information, my public school has beaten every private school in the area at the District Jazz Festival. Some of the worlds best high school bands come from public high schools.
no no i believe that, its just that i happen to have a music academy right nearby. my high school band director is one of the best in the state so i no public schools can be amazing. its just the circumstances why i made that comment. my bad
All this talent, but not many make a lot of money (or a living) in Jazz. Kids nowadays listen to rap, hip-hop, reggae, etc; and those guys make millions (literally) with 1/10th the talent of these guys. That's the music business. Ever hear of jazz musicians filling arena's or stadiums? The Stones bring in more than 200 million on tour; Madonna does likewise. You never hear that about a jazz musician? Kenny G-the highest grossing instrumentalist of all time. What does that tell you?
Great song, played it when I was in high school. I wish you could here the bass more in this video, totally drives the song.

Yep, some excellent players in this band - nice trumpet work - a little too fast though - the groove is best a tad slower. Nice G on the end.
