I love her classical vocal style. I hear so many versions of this song that sound like they are sung by a pop singer; regardless of the fact that G&S wrote light operas, they are still meant to be somewhat operatic!

want to hear these lines (both spoken and sung)delivered as they should be, watch Shirley Henderson in "topsy turvy" Mike Leigh's great film about the making of the Mikado. Henderson is true class. This lady is just good.
OsburgaTO I agree with you about Valerie Masterson's beautiful performance, it's truly classic. But nor do I knock Mary Votava here who IMHO is fresh, enjoys her song and has exuberance to spare for us.
You think? Katisha is a jealous menopausal wreck suicidally furious about her jilted state, she sings "May not a cheated maiden die". It's a difficult break with the otherwise farcical atmosphere in The Mikado.
Yeah...her delivery is very high school, and her phrasing and diction in the song aren't too great either. But it's good to watch it to see how other people perform it.
Since Yum-Yum in The Mikado has identified herself as a "little maid from school" her script is meant to be naive. Of the many performances on youtube I think only Mary Votava's measures up to Valerie Masterson's.

She was rushing the song. I agree about seeing the Masterson clip.

@KittyHerder You're right. Just a tad too fast. (Accidentally hit thumbs down for you. Didn't mean to!)

Her mannerism was totally wrong. Check out Valerie Masterson's clip for an accurate and masterful way to portray this role.
