the Testudo is only effective when facing off against cavalry and ranged units, else it has no use, they will be immobile, and unable to flank verry efectivly.

They formed testudo because it's a rare, early promo video of a game. Testudo looks cool and gives the cinematic impression of an invulnerable steel wall marching forward. It'd be a lame video if they just marched forward like they do ingame.

Never form testudo when the apposing army is charging towards you. Testudo is weak during hand to hand combat, strong against missiles. Form a strong defensive line, hack ur apponent like cattle as they come screaming towards u. Testudo during a charge lol!

The Legionaries only form the Testudo in sieges and the ballistas were never used in battle because of the time it takes to build which it is also used in sieges but good promo anyway

the testudo formation is highly effective againts from projectiles, but if they dont do it they will be easily crushed by the charge. Their shields are also effective to push enemies in their formation than the spartans. Speaking of spartans if romans shoot ballistas and large chunks of rocks from catapults at them well... May Zeus help them...
