  • I think microsoft is ACTUALLY being intelligent here. That is IF they are producing a thousand weird things and then watching public reaction to see if it will be worth producing. If they are NOT doing this, then we are doomed to regress back to the stone-age, yet again....

  • thats to much work to be doin on a damn phone...

  • what about on a windy day?

  • @chesterngiamzhenghao it uses infrared technology it doesnt mater how big the wind is

  • thats cool but how bout getting a bigger screan to do it on

  • very good.. very good.. technology is getter amaziing

  • thats pretty cool but what if u wanna use ur phone with one hand while doing something else, or dont have a table to put ur phone on at the time. thats where iphones would be better. u can just use it in one hand and thumb

  • exactly, some real interesting potential uses after the technology is improved though. If I were developing this I wouldn't be focusing on mobile technology but rather desktop computing.

  • yea, maybe if u didnt need a table, like waving ur hands around it would work, then ud possibly be able to use it with one hand.

  • Maybe if you had multiple directions the infrared is coming from (not sure where you'd put the sources) but then software would read the changes in the light blocked from your hands moving.

  • What? do I have to carry a table with me so I can use my phone then? or balance it on my leg or maybe on the back of the guy sitting in front of me in the tube every time i want to send a sms? what a seriously useless invention..

  • @eltorten Not useless, it could be used for other means,

like at your office, or labs of that sort.

Its like using a pencil as a knife [ if you get my jist]

A regular Phone is good enough for what it does.

  • @eltorten you just cant appreciate new technology can you?

  • @Jon21xx21 jumping to conclusions, much?

  • @eltorten actually, this could be the precursor to Tony Stark's hologram stuff from the Ironman movie.

  • @eltorten You remember those Wright Brothers who figured out that they could move a person in the air 30 meters? Completely useless. The one thing about humanity, is if they like it and it doesn't have a use, they'll make one.

  • Interesting idea. I'm curious to see what uses can be thought of for it.

  • Gimmick!

  • I can imagine Apple releasing the iphone being "Your move Microsoft" and then microsoft releases this phone is "Checkmate Apple" That would be so cool

  • Douglus Adams eat your heart out.

  • useless

  • plus the htc touch hd you can get for the same price as the iphone and it is so much better

it does more eg: it has more types of wireless conection. its screen quality is better (you can actually se the words),the screen is bigger and is also touch sensitive(you can use it with anything not just your fingers ) and its also got and expandable sd card slot ,so you can take the photo's that are on you mem card and put them in other things(witch you cannot with the iphone)

  • windows mobile is better

    you know why

the cheepest iphone is about £300 brand new

thats the same price as a high speck laptop.

the cheepest apple laptop is about £750 and top top it all of the laptop is really low speck

  • What's the point of that?

  • Why?

  • hey i have that phone! (htc touch. *cough*)

  • ɐɥɐɥɐɥ

  • Yes, but what about radios in South Korea.

  • ok will all apple fanboys just get out of here we all know windows is the best has the most sales.

  • thats fukkin useless

  • Except, it's not. Most touch screens these days fail because it's so hard to see what you're selecting. Imagine if someone constantly moved a quarter around where your mouse pointer was on your screen. This would make it very hard to make well defined selections. This new technology would allow the user to operate a mouse pointer on the screen thus eliminating clumsy finger guesswork. I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple take advantage of similar technology in a future iPhone.

  • Comment removed

  • cool kinda reminds me of the screen on minority report...just the less advanced version XD

  • wow that awesome

  • it's useless because you have to have it on the table to make it work like that or you gona have to hold it with one hand and use the ohter hand to do move it around which doesnt let you do that resizing thing. Plus its windows so i dont like :(

  • wth? its so cool! haha

  • sweet on one. try to play portal on that thing

  • WHY!!!

  • that is pretty sweet, although not exactly new... there were NES games that had this huge bulky accessory that used similar technology (a boxing game and a air combat game)... still this is a cool implementation into the phone world.

  • The 'hand effect' ??

I mean, when a hand is near electronic field ( like oscilloscope ) it disturb this field.

  • But why would you want that?

  • Agree also everything is "Like the iPhone" as she said lol everyone is trying to be one step up and so far... its not working... keep at it folks

  • wow this is cool but they should make a something like that but you move your finger in the air :)

  • I do because this PWNS iphone and itouch. THE BEST!!! HAHA FUCK APPLE! THEY SUCK!

  • And yet there will be 10000000 other phones that will own the Iphone.

And technically they havent been making phones since the late 90s. These are multimedia devices with communications capabilities. They call them phones to get gullable suckers such as yourself to replace it every 6 months to be chic.. or is it suave? what do you say slick?

  • Well first of all, i understand that there will be tons of other cellphones to replace the iPhone (and for the record i personally dont like the iPhone) I have been with the same stupid ass thing since whenever it came out because i dont remember. The Sidekick iD. I only got it because I'm low on cash and wanted a new phone because i had a real old phone that couldn't text. It was $50 so i was happy. So thats what i have to say to that.

  • @part2themovie thats not the point! What this does is that it opens doors to wider opportunities in the future. Now we know that off scene self controlling is an option

  • @lesco543 "technology" has a million applications. it's only the implementation of technology in an application/device that can be a dead end. and this implementation is a dead end. I'm sure it's going to spark someone's imagination. but I think that anyone who can slap together a prototype of something more useful would have been following the technology for quite some time and come to the conclusion that this particular config is a dead end. this is not a consumer device its an R&D recouper

  • @part2themovie well i disagree. There are no dead ends in technology. Technology is a big alley oop which is probably spontaneous. I see potential in this innovation. Its not the physical aspect of it, rather the idea of controlling without pressing or touching. This is a huge field that so many companies are investing a lot of time and work into. A prototype is a flame starter. A piece of a puzzle that nvr ends. There are no dead ends in spontaneous puzzles, just one less blank space

  • @lesco543

there was nothing to "disagree" with

there is no puzzle piece. this is a dead end implementation of a technology, same as a virtua boy was a dead end even though the 3d immersive technology is what is being revamped today. this implementation here is not practical and the manufacturers know this. but marketing will always allow for a segment willing to purchase

  • @part2themovie NO DEAD ENDS!!! yes i think its close to worthless. But think of all the things you can put this technology in. You can innovate and find a way to to move the motion sensing to in front of the scene so that you can-control large screens from a distance with the swipe of a hand or by automatically making ur desk a touch pad. Dont you think that's cool?

  • that's retarted

  • I don't liike it

  • Whatever happened to the flying car, or Rosie from the jetsons? Invent something good!

  • We're getting there lad!! What did you expect? We still have people believing in myths, religions and imaginary gods! Abolish religion and we'll have a colony on Mars, mark my words.

  • you are a prick and an asshole

  • "Abolish religion and well have a colony on Mars"- I like it! just wish it were possible :(

  • Mars is already populated but because the majority of people on earth are controlled by an evil they do not believe in, they will never get anywhere near the truth about our world and just what is going on here.

  • Hmm... people like yourself are lacking in the secret knowledge that einstein and da vinci knew well, which far exceeds modern science. By fathoming an 'imaginary god' like Horus, the ancients discovered the existence and function of the pineal gland without ever using science or any other destructive force.

  • wouldnt this mean you would need to lay your phone down to use it??

  • i wish this was real...

  • It looks like the response time is a little slow.. But that'll like improve in the future.

  • Kinda hard to use if you have a broken arm =/

  • This would keep screens in a lot better condition.

  • that's the only upside

  • Neato!

How about data entry without the need to hit keys? --->

"Hey you! You there drumming your fingers to my annoyance AGAIN!

There's technology now that will have you cutting everyone in the class compensatory cheques!"

  • using this technology for a phone is the stupidest shit ever whoever put this phone together should be shot with a virtual gun

  • oh god. do you people ever read over what youve been typing before you post and say to yourself, "wow, this is actually pretty retarded. maybe i should rethink it". because you should be.

  • what you by you people? you racist piece of shit! hope you fucking die choking on shit

  • LOL!!

  • of course by you people, i didnt mean retards or the average youtube viewer, i of course mean your particular ethnicity, be it persian or what ever. your ethnicity is positively the most disgusting and idiotic out of all the other. i hope america decides to bomb the shit out of what ever country the majority of your people come from. by the way your personal hygiene is far worse than every other person in your ethnicity.

  • Haha stupid.

  • what phone is that called???

  • What would be awesome is you might be able to mimic an actual size keyboard. Maybe?

  • Once someone eliminates fingerprints or oily smudges from showing up on a touch screen, which sounds possible, this will be useless.

  • Good idea, could prove difficult to use in practice, interesting though!

  • WOAH! How USEFUL!!!

  • Microsoft have already givin a warning to apple to look into this technology before google gets their hands on it.

  • kinda dumb

  • that is the stupidist idea i ever seen lol

  • why many people think it is useless? we can apply diz tech to another devices. may be we can control games, robots, weapon etc in the future. not only phone..

  • truee

  • this is a nice idea.

  • wtf is this for?

seems like a piece of shit that you would use only to impress ppl

  • maybe people dont like finger prints on their phone screen

  • seriously dude?

someone would buy that piece of technology just to not have smudges on their phone?

i have a krzr and lots of times i get smudges but i would never think of having something like that to prevent um, i would just wipe it off with mah shirt

  • thats why i use silicone no matter what lol

  • ppl do pointless shit like that all the time

  • stupid

  • that is a pretty dumb waste of money. If the screen is to small, then why even make it a touch screen? Have you ever heard of a stylus???

  • why don't they just save the trouble and go ahead and put microchips in our necks which allowes mental comunication

  • EXACTLLY!!!! Y waste the time doing inventing this shit we we could me mentally controlling it!

  • right ¡¡¡¡¡

  • because they cant..

  • wouldnt that hurt

  • useless

how often do u use ur phone on a table?

  • i think the idea is that, eventually, you'll be able to hold it with one hand and manipulate it with the other, off to the side or something.

  • exactly.

  • Fricking useless.

  • how bout companies just make larger screens instead of putting more money into this?

  • Consumers bitch too much about wanting things 'smaller' because somehow that is 'more convenient'. Everything always has to be slimmer, smaller, thinner, micro, nano, the size of fucking fingernails. As for me, I want my gadgets large enough that I can actually feel them in my pocket. :/

  • How about when your finger keeps getting in the way because you have to touch the screen. This would let you see what's going on while still controlling it.

    So simple-minded aren't you?

  • 太喜欢了..这个

  • What?

  • i guess it was sort of useful like she said when the screens are kind of smaller than usual but really no point i agree.

  • When would be the time you would actually need to do that?

  • Cool, but what's the point???

  • USE...LESS

  • badass

  • and how is this usefull?

    LOLLOLOLOLO MASTER CHEIF lOLL

  • touch screen is still better. more practical to use two fingers from one hand than to use two fingers from both hands.

  • WOW, another Giant Leap forward for pointless uses of our technological advances!

    Brilliant, going nowhere FAST.

  • why not just touch the screen

  • ...because Apple own the patent for that!!!

  • just make the screens bigger then. i love my lg dare.

  • What's the purpose of this technology?

  • If the screen is too small for tactile maneuvers.

  • What a crock of pap. Why dont they invest their money where it's needed.

  • nice BUT i'd bet it will drain the battery so quick you only scroll twice.

  • Lame stupid idea

  • PLEASE JUST SEARCH IT! Don't be blind and stupid.

  • Slow and choppy - yuck!

  • lol windows

  • looks horrible. seriosuly, it doesnt even work properly, touchscreens are more than enough already

  • I don't quite get the point of this instead of making the screens bigger lets just make a large cumbersome attachment to place it on the table...although it would cut down on people texting while in their cars

  • seems inconvenient and annoying to me......

  • is this that new Blackberry Storm that they won't let me see the front of lulz

  • nope it's the htc touch

  • Awesome. Im a mac guy myself but I guess Microsoft is doing their thing. Steve Jobs needs to step his game up.

WE are slowly becoming like the screens in the movie "Minority Report" with Tom Cruise

  • great that system has got to be the most user friendly interface i have ever seen

  • agreed to the square root. lol

  • haha then ur phone will break and u have to get a new one -.- hahaha

  • needs more cowbell...

  • So, what if you want to hold the phone? YOU'RE FUCT!! THAT'S WHAT!!!

  • This chicks voice drives me nuts.

  • why do we need this again?

  • She said why in the video. Open your ears.

  • Awesome idea if it reaches maturity. How about just a one-sided version (so you don't sacrifice button real estate/phone or PDA thickness)

Since 99% of future devices will probably have accelerometers, it could tap those and the onboard camera to automatically detect when it's placed on a surface and needs to start sampling for scroll data.

  • better than smudging up your touch screen with your filthy un-washed hands, imo.

  • ehh not very usefull

  • So just carry a table around every where you go! Brilliant!

  • it's used on top of a table think of it like a dock

  • wtf thats pointless

  • that be funny if a fly came by and like went crazy haha

  • hahaaa that's funny g5000

  • gay

  • wat

  • oo i likey

  • Sweet!!!

  • Ah ok.

  • fail

  • If I understand correctly, you don't need to put it on a table-it makes no difference to the IR.Of course,it would be harder to control :)

  • yeah but can it run Crysis? hehe nah seriously... I don't want to be sliding my fingers at a public table with trillions of germs every time I go out... and what about traveling...what if you can't find a flat surface???

    short version: NO

    long version: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    FAIL!

  • if you really dont like public tables: place phone on piece of paper, on table. If no flat surfaces available, put in on a portable flat surface like a book. What else is wrong with it?

  • I don't know how useful this would be. The fact that you have to put it down on a table sounds a little annoying. *shrugs* Guess we'll see.

  • A person has two use two hands, plus they gotta find a table to sit down at? Sounds like another Microsoft idea to me.

  • __ to __

  • Trippy. The idea is nice but the execution (framerate, polish, etc) is awful.

  • awful? looks pretty good considering its only an infant idea on a mediocre device. lets give this new touch pad a little more credit since its not even done yet.

  • leave these kind of stuff to apple. they are better at doing things like these.

  • looks clunky

  • yeah but it's just a demo, it should be a lot better if it ever makes it to production

  • Would work great on-the-go i see :|

  • I find it hard to believe there is an actual market for this...

  • How is there not a market for this? A way to avoid putting touch screens on a phone, while keeping all the same functionality. It would make it much easier to do finger actions on smaller screens as well.

  • Wow, this looks just awful.

  • what a waste of time may aswell just get either an iphone or a phone with a larger screen as surely that is better than dragging your finger around a desk and looking stupid

  • looks innovative yet laggy

  • Useful, if you have a table with you and no objects within a 30cm radius.

  • only responds to moving objects

  • Yes, but if there are objects in the way then you can't do your hand gestures.
