Best version of the song I've heard. That includes all the greats: Caballe, Battle, Fleming, Price, Callas of course, even Brightman and Church. This one is the best.

if you compare this rendition with Angela Gheorghiu's at Queen Beatrix Jubilee, Tebaldi's comes across as of very low quality - just embarrasing really!!!
I feel like people are missing the point... the waving and strolling is part of the diva thing. As others have said before here... she's trying to indicate comfort and ease as a way of highlighting HOW ridiculously talented she is: "I can do this without thinking!" But of course she is thinking... and the audience doesn't seem to take exception to it! :)
I really don't know how people can compare tebaldi with callas...they are the best, BOTH!!! How can you choose one?! This performace in just amazing!!!!
She's showing that she wants to buy a ring so thatr she can marry her lover. O mio babbino caro Mi piace, è bello, è bello Vo' andare in Porta Rossa a comperar l'anello! O mio babbino caro Mi piace, è bello, è bello Vo' andare in Porta Rossa a comperar l'anello!
Too many "professional" opera critiques on you tube! but to continue this callas v. Tebaldi is silly considering that they were both acclaimed and ms. Tebaldi was in her late forties or early fifties in this clip so for her to convey a little girl or young girl no matter how great an actress will go over as silly! As for me, I enjoy Tebaldi over Callas any day. A more refind but powerful voice in my opinion!
I think her voice was awesome and I think she was a great singer but I will always think she was not the better expressing feeling; she acts cold and this aria is not for being sung like this.
this is an encore in a recital, not the recital itself, and not in the opera. It was understood that she was famous for the song, her "hit tune" we might say, and so she gave them her hit tune. She was expected at that moment to be friendly, open and accessible--- no longer the diva in the recital, but the lady of the house serving a surprise dessert. Acting not the point at all in this moment. At other times, yes but here no.
Sure. She is having a bit of a laugh. But you can see that Renata has that special quality that they all lack today. You can see what all the fuss was about in her prime. She is a class act.
@CallasForeverable Shall we refresh the ancient debate about which is better? They are both dead and it seems that in secret they admired each other!!! As an Italian I root for Renata. I heard Maria Callas mispronouncing a few sentences quite often. To me words are as just as important as a good voice and music in an opera. An Italian opera, of course ;-)
@katesinger if you're used to Callas, the answer is: well, shes not tht into in acting-wise. shes hits the notes, nice coloratura and all, but no little acting. DONT GET ME WRONG RENATA UBER-FANS. but shes not with her whole soul in the singing....
@Marcelobasso35 ¡Ey,ey,ey! ¿Yo qué he dicho?
considering the time and era I think her hair looks great and the dress devine but this is just my opinion and I am 46 years old so in 1973 I would have been 9 years old.
It is a little on the fast side, but it is also a crowd pleaser...and may not be one of her personal favorites.... as I tenor I know I am soooo sick of being asked to sing "O'Danny Boy" or "Nessun Dorma."
On a different note, that night bus comment really had me in stitches with laughter. Very witty my friend, very witty indeed. :-)
Thank you.
Now please sing O'Danny Boy and Nessun Dorma - and no skimping on the high C...?-)
I have to agree with the speed of the peice. She has a fantastic voice and the higher notes were amazing. But there is no depth, and this song is all about emotional depth
@brandonichero Second year music students are as entitled to critique a legend as much as the nearest music snobs waiting to display their questionable superiority.
I don't think Tebaldi's voice works for this aria. She is a lyric soprano and I feel like the role requires a more dramatic voice. This is also a concert given in 70s. She has aged badly and apparently her voice was badly damaged already when she tried to incorporate dramatic pieces to her repertoire in the late 60s. Definitely not one of the bright moments in her career.
is she just going through the motions here or what?? i mean she still sounds amazing and i love her dont get me wrong. but she seems so relaxed, shes actually putting off slightly the.."im not really that interested" vibe...?!
@katesinger You are so right. I felt the same thing. Renata's voice is wonderful. No doub about it.The thing with artists is that we grow to love them and tend to forget they have their flaws: A headache, a heartache, a sore throat, etc.etc. A bad day can happen to everyone. And if you happen to see that performance ( or listen to it), just bear in mind that if we take the "whole" into account, that's where reside their Greatness. The same works for Bidu Sayão, Maria Callas, and so on. cheers
@katesinger compared to Callas, she sings (at least in this particular video) without any emotion whatsoever.. she is smiling while singing "if you don't let me, i'll throw myself in the river"
I mean I read somewhere that this piece is supposed to be half-drama half-comedy (a young silly girl who's in love and threatens to kill herself) but still, even a silly young girl would believe more in her passionate exclamation than this singer in her performance!
@shipcomesin No one,no one compares to Callas, the emotions that Callas would make you feel are beyond incredible,Tebaldi had a beautiful voice, but no emotion
@arvedsin OH COME ON......LISTEN CABALLE SINGING O MIO BABBINO CARO...LISTEN MOFFO SIGING SPARGI D AMARO PIANTO...LISTEN TEBALDI SINGING PACE PACE MIO DIO AND THEN TALK ABOUT EMOTION!
@operalover1959 Nope,no one like Callas, the only one,the Alpha and the Beta,Caballe,no feeling, lovely lady beautiful voice, same with Tebaldi, but NO feeling, weather you like it or not Callas will always be the BEST!!!
@ferricheart And I figured you out,see...there's a device you get inserted in you v-jayjay so you don't have to go through PMS every month...
Oh and by the way,I don't live in youtube(unlike you),have my own business, very young, fairly wealthy and have a career ,so I am not the loser here, your opinion is just as worthless as your brain,if any inside that stupid head of yours.
But your taste is bullshit ..... because Maria Callas, the POPERA QUEEN, the OPERA LIGHT SINGER, caws like a monkey in rainforest and you must be deaf ... SUPERMAN!!!
@ferricheart Why would I settle the best for you you fucking idiot!!You can say whatever you want and still be a fucking LOSER!!!So you take your taste and shove it up your ass, stupid stinky asshole!!!LONG LIVE THE QUEEN,MARIA CALLAS,FOREVER!!!
@ferricheart Oh and on the other channel you can also speak in English, don't be a pussy and talk to me in French, cause you know you're going to be attacked, fucking stupid, coward bitch!!!
Hey asshole! We are on the site of the GREATEST SOPRANO EVER you loser!!
You cannot compare Callas and Tebaldi because MC was only a singing actress without voice. Oh sorry .... she had a voice but it sound like a cawing monkey in rain forest.
Don't make a fool of yourself and fuck off ..... wanker!!
@ferricheart Easy Mary!!!what's with the insults? Don't get mad,Tebaldi was great, but as you said Callas was incomparable, she was,she is and she will always be THE BEST,forever CALLAS,LA DIVINA!!!
@katesinger I totally agree! Her voice is AMAZING. however, the random waving and awkward smiling made it seem as if this piece was the finale and she was ready get out of there. lol. In spite of it all, I cannot deny the beauty in her voice.
@katesinger No, it's just effortless for her and she makes it look easy. She was so darned good, she could have phoned this one in. Leontyne Price was the same way in concert. They made it look easy. Ask any soprano, this one isn't easy.
Demasiado rapido.
I am amazed at the relaxed, effortless style that produces such a magnfiicent result. And yes, I love her connection before and after with the audience. Bravo to voice and attitude.
This is very late Tebaldi. The attack on the last bit is a bit tough. But, this was the real McCoy, an Italian voice with real squillo and real meat, able to do justice to both Verdi and Puccini without sounding pushed. Compare this to anyone singing today, and she sang everything from Traviata to Aida, Mimi to Minnie and everything in between. There is a video of her in Forza, that is a lesson in how to sing these parts. But this is past her very best.
I am a true follower of Mme. Tebaldi, and although she may not have the same dramatic presence as Callas did, I still love Tebaldi's voice. She is one of the few sopranos I've heard who do not make me want to shriek with pain during high notes. Being a soprano as well, I very much appreciate those who came before.
Tebaldi had an amazing voice but the amazing feeling Callas always gave isnt there. Tebaldi was great, but she didnt live her music the way Callas did, still a great preformance.
A stupendous voice! Perhaps the best naturally endowed voice of any soprano in the 20th century. But that reedy not so perfect but beautifully trained voice of Calas won the day.
Listen to 'music', without rating it by technical peaks and troughs which you can measure on your over-priced 'Hi-Fi'. We all have our personal favourites, but we should not demean other wonderful artists in trying to score points in silly arguments. Callas, Tebaldi and several others can bring me to tears on my cheap sound system. I enjoy them all, and only wish there were more who could compare. Long live beautiful music, and singers with such voices, passion, pathos and humanity.
When I listen to things that they both do, I prefer Tebaldi to Callas because of Tebaldi's richer tone. But I have to concede that Callas's greater range allowed her to do things that Tebaldi couldn't.
This obviously wasn't the best recording of Tebaldi doing this aria, but it was still better than Callas could do.
I have to say this, so I can sleep tonight, these two ladies Callas and Tabailda are the same or close to the same age when Callas sang her last concert with this aria. Please let them both live, and understand that the voice is a fragile instrument, one was abused for lots of reasons. I need say no more. Just for God's sake people enjoy them all!!!!!!!
Grazie.

Yes, it was too hasty. Was she in a rush for a dinner party or something. It really took the emotion out of it. It is suppose to be a lullaby speed.
navydoc090 2 years ago
I agree. Reminded me of Maria Callas's version.
When you rush this particular aria you don't hit all the subtle tones that you do when you extend the song.

@katesinger I like her casual attitude here! It's sort of refreshing and approachable, for a change.

@katesinger You're right. She certainly doesn't act or sound like a young girl who is trying to convince her father to let her marry her boyfriend.
bruckner0001 1 year ago
@katesinger You are so right. I felt the same thing. Renata's voice is wonderful. No doub about it.The thing with artists is that we grow to love them and tend to forget they have their flaws: A headache, a heartache, a sore throat, etc.etc. A bad day can happen to everyone. And if you happen to see that performance ( or listen to it), just bear in mind that if we take the "whole" into account, that's where reside their Greatness. The same works for Bidu Sayão, Maria Callas, and so on. cheers
JoseEduardoNZ 1 year ago
@katesinger compared to Callas, she sings (at least in this particular video) without any emotion whatsoever.. she is smiling while singing "if you don't let me, i'll throw myself in the river"
I mean I read somewhere that this piece is supposed to be half-drama half-comedy (a young silly girl who's in love and threatens to kill herself) but still, even a silly young girl would believe more in her passionate exclamation than this singer in her performance!

@katesinger I totally agree! Her voice is AMAZING. however, the random waving and awkward smiling made it seem as if this piece was the finale and she was ready get out of there. lol. In spite of it all, I cannot deny the beauty in her voice.
minorkeyz1 1 year ago
@katesinger No, it's just effortless for her and she makes it look easy. She was so darned good, she could have phoned this one in. Leontyne Price was the same way in concert. They made it look easy. Ask any soprano, this one isn't easy.

Demasiado rapido.

I am amazed at the relaxed, effortless style that produces such a magnfiicent result. And yes, I love her connection before and after with the audience. Bravo to voice and attitude.
brandonichero 2 years ago 2
This is very late Tebaldi. The attack on the last bit is a bit tough. But, this was the real McCoy, an Italian voice with real squillo and real meat, able to do justice to both Verdi and Puccini without sounding pushed. Compare this to anyone singing today, and she sang everything from Traviata to Aida, Mimi to Minnie and everything in between. There is a video of her in Forza, that is a lesson in how to sing these parts. But this is past her very best.

Brava Renata e brava Maria.
morachioli1 2 years ago 2
Concordo plenamente.
filipepassos83 2 years ago 2
I am a true follower of Mme. Tebaldi, and although she may not have the same dramatic presence as Callas did, I still love Tebaldi's voice. She is one of the few sopranos I've heard who do not make me want to shriek with pain during high notes. Being a soprano as well, I very much appreciate those who came before.
BassBunnieGirl 2 years ago 4

Tebaldi had an amazing voice but the amazing feeling Callas always gave isnt there. Tebaldi was great, but she didnt live her music the way Callas did, still a great preformance.

Tebaldi could sing Callas under the table and then some. Callas was a better performer no doubt but did not posses the voice Tebaldi did..
Marvinglz 2 years ago
