  • From when Tesco's was fab. Funky music there!

  • is this deal still on

  • Wow things were cheap then!

  • HANG ON! Tesco sell food? I thought it was just aisles and aisles of everything but in Tesco Extra Hull! Anyone watched Tesco Value Contact Lenses yet?

  • if you'd loaded up on tesco shares in 1982 you'd be rolling in cash right now

  • This was before Tesco owned most of the UK.

  • OMG! At Tesco stores INCLUDING Stevenage?!

  • The Stevenage branch of Tesco first opened in 1973, so have no idea why they have been singled out, maybe it was because of kids like me nicking the stock back then in the early 80's!

  • Why did this all turn polical its a Tesco advert for goodness sake!

  • What's right with Stevenage. Shit hole full of Chavs, unlike Henley where I live near to a Waitrose.Only common people and benefit scroungers shop at Tesco. A large part of the country then. Better watch out, Cameron is making you get off your bums and work.

  • @DaveyC95 I find your comments offensive how dare you accuse all people who sign on of being scroungers, some of us lost our jobs through redundancy because of the recession. Yes some people are happy to not work and just claim off the state but I am not one of those people because I am in the middle of setting up my own business. Dont tar us with the same brush. I am not common either I have worked hard all my working life and live in a very nice area of the Country.

  • @DaveyC95 Yes, whilst probably making you redundant!

  • Maybe Stevenage was a brand new store in 1982.

  • did anyone else read the small print at the end - what is the significance of the "checkout prices being served in most stores including *Stevenage* ? "

    what's up with Stevenage?

  • As for the 'our children's future' argument the UK needs to invest in China, as whether we like it or not, it is growing while we decline relatively in the long run. Tesco does matter in that context. I bet you have pension funds or similar that invest in Tesco. We live in one world, whether we like it or not - and we always have done. I don't think there is any way to avoid the fact that our children will have to work for wages that are equal to those elsewhere, for the first time ever.

  • @Kevo00

I have a friend who works at Tesco HQ in hertfordshire, this is where I get my "evidence" from.

*I used the dictionary definition of "globalism"

*we DON'T need to invest in china - Britain was once a strong, proud nation and it can be again if we regained our soverignty and stopped focusing on finances so much and more on manufacturing.

*I don't have (or trust) pensions for the reason you outlayed

*We live in one world but we don't need a one world government

  • @Kevo00

I suppose the reason I highlited the topic of governments intervening is - I have alot of suspicion for them and companies they get involved in.

I mean tony blair desperately wanted to get Tesco setup across the middle-east (after he practically wiped out everything there)

And now our latest prime minister is spending alot of time, travelling across the world opening up Tesco stores.

Who really benefits from this?? Except the CEO's at tesco?

Do shop workers get paid more? nope

  • globalization or globalisation (ˌɡləʊb ə laɪˈzeɪʃən)

    — n

The emergence since the 1980s of a single world market dominated by multinational companies, leading to a diminishing capacity for national governments to control their economies

The process by which a company, etc, expands to operate internationally

You say we are less globalised than in 1910!??

How can that possibly be? (on a practical level)

  • @SteveFusionX Pretty inaccurate definition actually. It doesn't have to mean economic globalisation. As it is we have more pluralism today than in 1910. In 1910 six or seven governments dominated the entire planet, London was the only major stock exchange and financial centre and most major currencies were equal because they were tied to gold. There were plenty of multinationals then as now, infact the UK butchery trade was dominated by British-South American and Aus/NZ firms.

  • I remember this advert like it was yesterday, the catchy music.

  • Ultravox's Cann&Currie responsible for the tune!

  • I wish they were that cheap today.

  • @borgduck

Once tesco have destroyed all competition, prices will skyrocket.

Everytime you shop in there, you fund your own future slavery.

    check: w w w boycottesco c o m

    for more info

  • The vocal on this is by Clare Torry...........beats singing for Pink Floyd !!!

  • They even have Tesco in Japan!!

  • is it just me or does the woman on the front of the old pg tips boxes look like ET?

  • I like tescos I think its the best market in the world!!!!

  • No one forces anyone to shop there, remember this is the biggest private employer in Britain. Tesco's tax payments probably keep the country going. Times change, people want convenience, Tesco are providing a service. Choice is yours.

  • They NEED to bring back the 0:39 Voice!

  • Check out 'Walmart' in the States. They have moved into small towns, and every small store has had to close, until there is only 'Walmart' left. Same sort of idea as 'Tesco' in Britain. Family owned businesses that have been there for generations have had to close down. Walmart has ruined millions of peoples lives. I will not set foot in one of their stores on principle. Tesco is probably the same. We have to boycott these large corporations.

  • @jobirgheidi

tesco are actually WORSE than walmart .

Tesco are openly funding the NWO and UFID technology... check out this website:

    ww w (do t) boycottesco ( do t) co m

They have been putting microchips into the products we buy. Here in london there is a tesco for every square mile.

They don't just want profits -they want a slave race, and intend to create "tesco villages" where you can only use tesco money.. People will laugh at this but it's all true

  • @SteveFusionX There would be no point Tesco creating its own money, because it would have no external value.

  • @Kevo00

Of course not. Which is why they are planning to build "tesco towns" where everything is contained - you won't be able to buy ANYTHING except stuff that is tied to Tesco.

There won't even be any car manufacturers - it will ALL be owned by tesco.

I've been talking to a guy who works at the Tesco HQ in hertfordshire; he says their plan is a complete take-over of britain by 2025.

With no other companies existing. Once that happens, we will be in a slave-state with no democracy.

  • @SteveFusionX I love you corporate conspiracists. Who is this bloke from Cheshunt? I'd love to hear his plan to multiply Tesco by 2400% in 15 years. Also, I'm struggling to understand why this firm would want to enslave its own shareholders...

  • @Kevo00

    This isnt a conspiracy. It's a fact.

    Do some research into it.

Search now, online for the information regarding Tescos plans to create entire towns. They are becoming more powerful than government (if not already)

  • @Kevo00

IF you don't understand why tesco are doing this then look into the "new world order" something Gordon Brown talked about alot. Everything "globalised".

Tesco are not content to just make profits, they want to push towards a microchipped society - which is why they have been investing heavily into UFID technology.

Again, this isnt a conspiracy - they've admitted this openly.

  • @SteveFusionX Lets see some citation for this then. You can't really just say 'search online' for something. As it is boycotttesco hasn't been updated since 2005! When have they admitted openly that they want to push towards a microchipped society? Actually, I can't find any source out there on this that's dated later than 2005 - except for on David Icke's website, which you can't possibly take seriously.

And if Tesco ran the UK it would constitute a trade barrier. Not very globalised!

  • @Kevo00

In a copy of the mirror this week - almost every page had a tesco advert on it - proudly boasting "the competition has been destroyed" (beating every other shop on prices)

    w ww (do t) telegraph(do t)co (do t) uk/property/propertynews/7633824/Tesco-mini-village-building-plans-will-make-it-more-powerful-than-government.html

I didnt know david icke warned about tesco? I will look into that!

he's generally right on quite alot of other stuff.

  • @Kevo00

re tesco "running the uk" that is clearly not their ONLY agenda - they've set up over 90 stores in china and other countrys; all over the world.

Interestingly - our prime minister, David Cameron was over in china "approving" of the setup (while our own British people were rioting on the streets re cuts/tax raises)

And Tony Blair, years ago tried to setup tesco across the middle east (after he blew crators in it) but failed..

Globalism is not a good thing! People need to wake up

  • @SteveFusionX Running an advert saying that you beat other shops on prices is not evidence that you intend to take over the world, I'm sorry. I'm not sure what you expect Cameron to do in China - you have to be diplomatic about these things. Globalisation is such an over-used tag these days, however, yet its nothing new, has always existed, and its better for everyone to specialize in what they are good at. I'd actually argue we are less globalised in 2010 than we were in 1910.

  • @Kevo00

    Hi Kev,

I didn't say the adverts were evidence of anything - I was just pointing out how Tesco gloat about "destroying the competition" -which is their TRUE agenda on a larger scale.

I know you are laughing now but you will realise I was right in the coming years, maybe even this next year, alot will come to surface.

Yes, cameron has to be diplomatic -but what is more important? Tesco or our childrens future in, here in Britain?

I don't think you know what globalisation is. :S

  • @SteveFusionX You claimed to have evidence that Tesco have admitted openly that they want a microchipped society. That ad is not evidence of that. They may gloat about 'destroying the competition', but who doesn't?

You argument is flawed because if Tesco take control of the UK, that undermines the idea of a global free market because it would constitute a trade barrier. As it is you are being somewhat hypocritical, as this website is US owned, and dominates the world market for video!

  • @Kevo00

  • so cheap o_O

  • The funny thing is they still reduce their food by 2p at a time

  • god half of these things are a con in price now

  • This adverts soundtrack reminds me of

SUPERMARKET SWEEP :D I loved that show

  • Tesco are crooks bastards

  • Fuck tesco, i live in Nottingham and we have 7, count them 7!!! just in the city centre. I wouldnt be surpirised if there were 100 in Nottinghamshire alone...

    No fucking need...

  • haha

  • @buttershex It's the same everywhere. there are 20 in Cardiff alone. Tecso are of the mindset that if you are going to spend money, they want to make damn sure you spend it with them. but what happens when there isnt any competition left?

  • the girl singer on this ad is Clare Torry who also sang with Meatloaf ,Tangerine Dream & Shriekback..........

  • Our store in winchester has has a huge refit and its now a tesco extra. Full of extra shite.

  • Why are some people on here so fucking thick!!!

Back in 1982 wages were a lot lower so these prices were not cheap! also the early 80's were a tough time millions unemployed, people forget how hard times could be back then.

However love to go back to 1982, was only 10 back then, but I was lucky my family were quite well off, but millions were not!

  • abhard6

so true i remember those days dont think i could afford to shop at tescos had to be at prestos or something like that

  • 80 pg tips tea bags 59p, they are now 98p or something for 40!!

  • The caption at the end states "Crossed out prices were charged in many Tesco stores INCLUDING STEVENAGE" Why single them out? Did the town have a reputation for ripping people off or something? Was their Tesco sh*t?? Who knows!!!

  • I'm rushing down to my local Tescos at those prices!

  • I used to love Prize yoghurts. The hazlenut ones were delish.

  • Oh yeah..I remember that flavour, whatever happened to hazlenut yoghurts!!!!!!!

  • Ha! You have a top memory.

  • one opened near holloway road north london a FEW DAYS AGO.

7pm on a saturday night theres 6 tills and only 2 of them open and q'd for 5 minutes.

this video is when tescos prices were reasonably fair

Tescos = piss takers of customers and prices

  • mmmm... family brick

  • I'm gathering Tesco is in England? I'm in the states & have nver heard of it. But I see Pedigree dog food had brand called "Chum." That's hilarious, I'm thinking the stuff they lure sharks with. You open the can (tin) and it's all fish heads, intestines, scales, and blood.

  • You,ve not heard of Tescos??..Oh, give it time pal, they are bloody everywhere. If they could pave the channel we would have a frigging Megastore between us and France, believe me.

  • Eew, from how you and the other folks above describe it, it sounds a lot like our WalMarts over here across the pond!

  • @HGbunny lol...actually the supermarket called Asda is much much worseI think Walmart controls that as well.

However we are such a small Island and these bloody things are everywhere now.

  • @HGbunny Yes, you are correct, Tesco are intent on world domination. they now have a presence in Europe and are trying to break into the US as well. Although the UK is a small Island, £1 in every £7 spent here is with Tesco. not content with a supermarket in every town, they have sometimes up to 20. They are the killer of high street small business.

  • changed in MANY stores? so what's that, every one except the one nearest you lol.

  • Brilliant - love the graphics

  • Oh my GOD since the 1977 commercial, Penguin 6 packs have gone up from 19.5p to 29.5p, 10p in just 4 years. That was Thatcher for you!

  • LOL. And what's more that was on special offer - standard price 31p!

  • @halsalli I think you'll find the Labour governments of the 70's weren't exactly experts in controlling inflation either ;)

  • @halsalli was nothing to do with Thatcher about price increases

  • @halsalli How much are penguin bars now? :O

  • @halsalli because of maggie you can`t afford to ppppp-pick up a pppp-penguin

  • @halsalli no its called inflation

  • @halsalli yeah and they're like £4.29 now ;)

  • 1 and a half pence off Penguin biscuits and 2p off PG Tips. Not exactly the eye catching bogofs we see now!

  • That title track reminds me of Dale Winton's "Supermarket Sweep" :)

  • This when Tesco's used to sell food, instead of trying to kill the High Street by selling everything else.

  • @caxtonman Tesco was no2 retailer Sainsburys was no1,

  • @caxtonman Can't blame them for trying.

  • @ShowPolitics Ahh, the voice of a non-shop owner........!

  • @caxtonman explain how you came to that conclusion?

  • Tesco was sung by Clare Torry

  • This is my favorite of all Tesco ads. Of all supermarket ads. With the galloping warbling synthpop jingle and the motorik "checkitout" voices, it's always going to be futuristic in my mind.

  • asda then 82 lol

  • 1982. Must have been about the time Nuneaton Tesco closed down.

  • if you bought 1000 quids worth of tesco shares in 1982 you could sell them for about 100 thousand today.

  • 'crossed out prices charged at many stores...including Stevenage?!?!

  • wow a 1 1/2p reduction on penguins. Retailers used halfpenny markings until 1984 when it was withdrawn from circulation. The halfpenny was used manily agains rounding up of prices after decimalisation. When is it time to get rid of the 1p and 2p??

  • Yer, but 29 1/2 pence for 6 penguins. Bargain!!!! I bet they could sell at '82 prices and still make a profit.

  • It was the catchy 'check it out' jingle and the attractive 'Checkout 82' branding that really made the difference

  • Is it just me or did adverts back then seem much better then they are now!

  • It ain't just you! I find myself hard pressed to recall adverts from yesterday, yet I can still remember ad's from the 1980's as though I had only just seen them.

  • i wunder where 02 mobile got there logo from......

  • Woah, retro! :D

  • anyone remember the festive version of this? De duu duu de duu christmas 82 de duu duu duu duu duu de duu duu.

  • Lol Ice-cream brick! I forgot that ice-cream once came in cardboard cover.

  • i love 1/2 p its great

  • that looks like the 02 logo lol

  • and no wonder with today's prices they make 3billon GBP profit!

  • half pences LOLOL I stil got summa dem

  • Me too! And I thought merchants didn't use 1/2 p in their prices.

  • when they had 1/2 pence!!!

  • This one was sung by Clare Torry .

  • If you want to step back in time, visit the Tesco in Worksop. It hasn't been done up since the mid 80's. It's the only Tesco left I know that looks exactly the same inside as all the others did back then... (As of typing this comment)

  • Theres a tesco near me that hasn't been done up since the 70's or 80's.

the only thing new in there is the food and the price labels!

  • I bet they're not still charging mid-80s prices though, mores the pity.

  • Can you get any photos?

  • imagine if you could go back then and tell people in 2008 they'd be paying £1.30 for a loaf and tesco's would be as big as it is now?

i'm sure back then tesco's was a bit shit. well my mom didn't rate the one in small heath, and she knows her shit.

  • I worked for Tescos on the tills in Brighton at this time & was dazzled by thr new all electronic till in the ad.

We still had the old mechanical type & didn't get these new ones for another two years.

  • Ah! I remember as if were yesterday..... llok at the price of those penguins.

  • Pounds and ounces still in use!

  • remember it well!!! thought the music was great,

  • it's the supermarket sweep theme!:O

  • and they used to play that song at all tescos stores 24 hours a day

  • Why does it feel the need to say " Crossed out prices in many Tesco stores including STEVENAGE"????

  • Yeah' i wondered that. It's a very random thing to say :S

  • perhaps because that was the huge store in the area this advert was show? Lets not forget back in 82 most Tesco's were little high street places (much like the Extra's that are around today, as opposed to the big supermarkets of today).

  • People still misused apostrophes in those days too.

  • Yes and others still forgot to use exclamation marks at the end of an appropriate sentence! Furthermore, there were still people who had nothing better to do with their lives than concern themselves with other peoples spelling and grammar!

  • Well after all, spelling and grammar aren't important are they? I knew what you meant.

  • Spelling and grammar have importance - in business communication and in school, but are hardly significant on you tube comments!

  • yeah...but every little helps

  • spelling and grammar won't make the price of peas any cheaper...

  • Maybe the Stevenage store was new at the time.

  • Did I see a few 1/2s in there? 12 and a half p or whatever!

  • Somone should come up with a dance routine for this, lol!

  • I wondered where o2 got their logo from.

  • haha

  • Those were the days...

when Stella on checkout four always siad...

"oooooh hang on a mo' lovie... I've just got to add in a new till roll..."

...not sure about the relevance of a 49.5p can of Chum. We didn't have a dog.

  • Food has actually got cheaper in real terms since 1982.

  • Oh it's so much better to see 11lb peas and 5oz of Yogurt! Not all this 125.665g of apples or whatever.

  • They had to be cheap prices cuz people didnt have as much money as we do these days...

  • tesco prices are great but not as chep as in the video

  • This isn't spam!

  • TESCO shops are far cheaper than any where else, and better quality too

  • Er, have you been to Morrisons lately?
