It started in the words composed by Rev. Phillip Doddridge, a Britannic minister, on mid of century XVIII, so much sung with our traditional hymnbooks. One hundred years later Edward F. Rimbaut, another Britannic organist, composed a new harmony and melody. More other one hundred years later (1968) Edwin Hawkins arranged a new way of singing it. Some years still later this song got fully succeeded through its diffusing by Hollywood, in "Sister Act".
