I really love listening to the Cars and didn't realize how great a singer Ben Orr was until I looked back at some of these performances. We'll never forget you Ben.
I was at this concert and will never forget it. I was (and am) a huge fan of The Cars and this was a very special night for me. One of the best concerts I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of big bands live. Will always miss Ben Orr.
thats awesome i see myself in the crowd just at the 18 to 20 second on the counter, i went to see the cars each time they came to houston, this is great,
my so proud of the cars and my hometown crowd!!! the cars = one of america's best 80's bands (with lasting power to today and beyond!). houston "the cars" fan presence = the raddest looking 80's crowd i have just about ever seen (check out the guy with the tommy bahamas and sunglasses near the beginning! :P) RADICAL :D!
cars play that song so often they need to shake it up lest they sound stale.
steely dan's 2 against nature tour, saw donald fagan substitute aretha franklin--queen of soul for otis redding-king of soul on their classic, hey 19.
well, he was collectively booed and throttled for an hour by an irate audience and they ran him out of town on a rail. they'll never play nissan pavillion again. people just don't abide tampering. with their ticket prices, they ought to be redubbed, stealing hand.
@sithyness (too fast) they may have had a curfew or been on restriction that month and just needed to get home before their parents locked them out. whatever the case, 7-11 stays open like 24/7...where's the fire, boys?
Ric is cool. That's his persona and his fabricated character. Ric is iconic. Ben has to be one of the most beautiful people ever on a stage, but what do people remember from the poster? That oh-so-cool dashing figure of Ric in those glasses with that angular jacket and his quirky looks. Each one is an essential ingredient. Ric can probably do a lot more than what you see in the Cars.
I've watch a few Cars videos both live and stuff off the records. I see that Ben Orr is doing lead vocs on the live stuff and Ric Ocasek isn't singing or doing backups. I always assumed that was him on all the records. Did he choose not to do the lead singing on the live material?
I used to think so as well, but Ben Orr was the glue of most of the hits. It was quite a realization check when I discovered this, but Ben ruled. These tapes show it.
Ric and Ben each had songs where they were the lead vocalist. It doesn't have anything to do with it being live. Ben had Drive, Let's Go, Just What I Needed, etc. Ric had You Might Think, Magic, Hello Again, Tonight She Comes, Shake It Up, etc. I have seen an interview where they discussed how songs were split up between the two of them. It was simply a matter of whose voice fit best with the song.
no ben just sang some songs on the albums but he didnt do all the songs on the albums or live in concert there is plenty of songs rick is doing in concert,i cant believe ben is dead he wasnt that old i wonder what he died from.
I think this version is so much better than the original...the driving drums carry the song much better, and Ben's vocals have an intensity and immediacy that, while present in the original, are amplified in this terrific live version.
My connection with this song is from when it first came out, I was 14 in '79, met 'this' boy, he played the record and sang this song while we danced to it when I was 15. I heard the gunshot that killed him when I was 16... this song/video is helping me heal, I had forgotten about that night. :) Only love heals everything.
A few weeks ago, I saw the same video of this song at the same concert and the mix sounded absolutely horrible. I wondered why this happened. I've been trying to find the version of the song again, but I can't. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
In the late 90s early 2000's it was changed from the Summit to the Compaq Center, then once Enron Field, The Toyota Center and Reliant Stadium were built it was essentially abandoned, much like The Astrodome. What you know today as the main campus of Lakewood Church run by Joel Osteen is believe it or not where this concert was recorded.
Ben Orr rocks! Still, this was THE worst show I ever saw. Wang Chung (their opener) outperformed the Cars. The 80s were peaking and these guys came out bored and detached. Worse still, it took like 10 minutes in-between song. They said nothing. Terrible.
