  • Is this after gene clarke left?

  • Never the same without Gene---- just so ya know!!!

  • I love this song, but I have to be honest...

.... Bob Dylan sings this song with so much more emotion and when I hear him sing it, the song brings chills to my soul.

When I hear The Byrds sing this song, it just doesn't feel like they are singing it from the heart.

Again this is just my own personal opinion, and nothing against The Byrds, I am a big fan and I do actually enjoy listening to their version of this amazing Bob Dylan song.

    Peace love and happiness :)

  • ...and when we're together they call us The Byrds

  • Why didn't they ever sang live, these feckers !?

  • Crosby = Legend

  • hahaha, so uncomfortable

  • great video.thanks for posting. music back then had more meaning than the music of today

  • oh their sound is so unique

  • Notice Gene Clark isn't in this. He hated flying and sometimes refused to go along when they had to fly. Maybe one of the reasons for his later departure from the band.

  • I'll never forget when I read a Swamp Thing's comic and there's a forbiden 60's character singing this song.

  • great song

  • Anyone know where I can find the 1967 Byrds appearances at the late show with Johnny Carson 1967?

  • @jonny1251 I have it on audio

  • What happened to Ringo? i read Paul said Star used to go off and smoke peyote during recordings of this song.

  • did Hillman mount the neck of his guild onto a fender? that's an interesting combo.

  • They didn't take their own instruments on this quick promotional trip to Europe, and these were provided as props by the program.

  • Most of the players don't look like they are into this video shoot....except Crosby. McGuinn ain't even using a pick which is impossible to play a Rickenbacker 12-sting without one.

  • unless youre roger mcguinn

  • Brilliant.....only word that comes to my mind.

  • Chris dos'nt look livid here.He looks really sweet.

  • Fine.

But with the present David Crosby we can do 3 from this time.

  • Hillman wasn't glaring at anyone in this vid--that's how he always looked when he performed back then, with Mannasas, and with Desert Rose. He looks ultracool to me, not livid.

  • @nhoner Just to set the record straight, Hillman could be quite crabby. i saw him perform with the Burrito Bros. at the La Paloma in San Diego-maybe1970? People weren't dancing to the music, so he berated us like red headed step children. He then batted his mic. with his guitar. We still didn't dance, so he paid us back by playing his music heavy metal style. He then screamed at us an said, "We play folk music not this SHIT!" -----I'm just sayin', However, I still love the Byrds. . .and Chris.

  • @ehairgrove You mean he's an actual mortal? News to me... I went to one of his acoustic shows this summer and he signed my '65 P bass. I'd say he's mellowed with age since 1970--a totally nice guy, with a very sharp wit.

  • One of the best songs of all time!

  • Is it true, this song made Dick Clark cry on stage because it was so great? My father told me this.

  • Sounds as good as the first time. Nothing is quite as good as Byrds.

  • They surely don't look like the poster children for love and peace in this video, going thru the motions. That's show-biz. I never analyzed their relationship, but I do know that Crosby has been one big Fuckup throughout his life. He's lucky to be alive. Very lucky. JIM (Roger) will forever carry on the torch. One of my favorite RmcG Albums is Back from Rio.I picked up the CD in the dollar bin last year.haha.

  • Well, really it was Jim's band (which may have been part of the problem). Crosby may be lucky to be alive, but he is certainly luckier than Clark and Clarke.

  • I don't think its right that anyone who expresses a dislike of Crosby should be termed 'jealous' or 'bitter'.

Anyone who knows the story of this band knows that when he was young, though a fine singer, Crosby was immeasurably less talented than McGuinn and especially Clark, but thrust himself to the foreground as much as possible.

Its not a crime to think of him as an annoying kid at school who talks himself up way beyond his abilities.

It's bono syndrome, and some of us don't like it!

  • he didn't "pull out the pick" cos he often wore fingerpicks having been a banjo player before taking up the electric 12 string.

  • I might be wrong, but doesn't Crosby seem to have gained some extra kilos after this cut...

  • always love the hats, man

  • This clip is a gem.

I have a DVD in much higher quality (still Black & White) without David's introduction.

Michael's scarf is cool and suggests cold weather...now that I know this was filmed in Sweden that makes sense.

Also on the DVD are are other early beauties such as "Times they are a changing", "Turn turn turn" with the spiral background, and "All I really want to do" +plus some later stuff such as "Chestnut Mare" and some some songs from a late 1980's reunion concert.

    Cheers...

  • This is a piped recording. The guitar is a Rickenbacker 370/12BYRD. Perhaps the first version of Roger's guitar that the company made for him.

  • you can tell the rest of the band loathes fatboy Crosby

  • That's bullshit, they were friends and Cosby is not fat in this video dude.

    What are you jealous about?

  • @Thejbirdy Yes they were great friends. Thats Why Hillman and McGuinn fired him in 67.

  • he called Roger "Jim" which i know is his real name, but i always thought professionally he went by Roger..weird!

  • He changed it right around this time, as the result of a spiritual reason.

  • Poor quality but great footage nevertheless. Interesting to see Roger McQuinn without his trademark granny glasses he always wore during this period. Of course, Crosby is always Crosby. He's had a great career.

  • I don't like how they're lip-synching a song they did 2 years ago...Younger than yesterday JUST came out! Where's the Have you see her face, Renaissaince Fair, Time between, My Back Pages, Girl With No Name, Old John Robertson, Lady Friend lip-synchs?????

this is good but the byrds had progressed too much in 2 years to do this.

  • Heck, the Byrds were lip synching this same song in 1970! That's too bad, these guys were way too good for that.

  • Do you think it was because Roger was sort of nervous about singing live? I had heard he was a bit shaky when he had to play and sing at the same time.

  • tno way....

  • Fuck you. Because he was the most talented of the Clark-less Byrds. He was the forward-thinking experimenter. Hillman was a negative traditionalist.

  • Fuck Crosby! Why the fuck does he get to speak?

  • LOL! This is the first time I saw Crosby when he was not fat as hell. The 1965 videos he was a fat kid. The jerk has such a grating personality. Did the lesbian woman singer he knocked up use a turkey baster?

The rest of the band was great.
