  • great vid ,that helped me !!!

  • @imahmud ... Because they're still bitter about 1812. Wiki: Burning_of_Washington and find out why the White House is that colour.

  • how did you get that little node thing back inside, your video just cuts to the spot where its sticking out and you just push it into the chain. mine is NOT going in and i dont know how to set it up like that

  • oh god, it wasnt supposed to come out D: what do i do now? do i need a new chain again?

  • Thank you so much for this wonderful video...fixed my chain :)

  • Not only did my body survive a heart attack, but my bank account never saw the difference before or after. As far as the rest, I don't see people leaving Canada by the boat load so I guess we're doing pretty good. I know I wouldn't want to live anywhere else even though I hate winter with a passion.

    Peace

    Gerry :)

  • can't find that tool anywhere, in the end I used a drill to drill the old bolt thing and put a pop rivet in its place

  • Thanks for the video, well explained.

Also, have a question : are you from quebec? Est-ce que j'ai reconnu un accent? :P

  • @fl260 Bin certain. :)

  • Brill video!

  • Fantastic video. I love how you don't take yourself too seriously... especially the lack of anger management in the middle. Nice touch!

  • @akj375 Thanks, I try to keep it fun as well as informative.

  • Can't afford a new chain, so I'm thinking of salvaging the old one, but can't find the master link. Seriously, I'd think something like that would stick out like a sore thumb, but I don't see one! Think I just need a chaintool?

  • @Mattecarshop Most chains in my experience don't have a master link. A chaintool is a must in my opinion.

    Gerry

  • @xddorox Thanks =) I got back from checking two stores across the street (I live next to a supercenter type of thing) And neither had one =( Tomorrow though I'll go check some actual bike stores in town. Thanks for the reply!

  • You saved my life!!!!! Thank you so much for making it easy to understand unlike the other how-to videos.

  • @Varonicide Were you being chased by Zombies at the time? I'm just glad I could help.

    Gerry :)

  • Nice guy, great tutorial, you rock !

  • @DexVil Thanks :)

  • Why do ALL of these YT videos use some kind of tool?? SPAM? I just find the pin on the master link and pop it off. Why doesn't any of these videos show how to do this?

Again, I think you're trying to sell some tool.

  • @YTSparty Damn! You uncovered my master plan. Now I won't be able to pay off the Porsche and the kids college tuition. Yes you could use a master link, but in my opinion using the tool makes the chain cleaner and stronger. I could be wrong but that's just my opinion. Now where is that lazy butler?

  • @xddorox So thy still come with a master link? I can't find one on this bike I've been given, the chain is a little rusty. It is annoying that you need to buy a chain remover though, it's all money. Thanks for a helpful video though.

  • @MrPantone123 Buying tools is an investement. It will always pay itself back or make you money. You never sell your tools as long as you can use them.

  • @xddorox I agree, but I'm not sure I'll take up cycling as a serious hobby, so any tool bought has to be carefully thought out, I'll look for a master link first as I can't see a retaining pin. Thanks for the reply too.

  • @xddorox A chaintool is one of the basic tool for any cyclist. Buy a cheap one and keep it lubed well. It will last a very long time. I still have my cheapo $4.99 one that I keep as a spare when I can't find my good one. It's 18 years old :)

  • If you're that bothered get a quick release chain

  • what if i dont have the tools that you used to put the chain together, what could i use?

  • @mmyyddddd Some people have used a nail and hammer. I've never tried it myself.

  • Comment removed

  • @xddorox my grandfather used that method actually :D but on 1930's bikes :D one chain ring in front, one on the back... Piece of a nail, hammer and the hard place :D...

  • @GrendelPL Thank you for sharing that with us. Now we know it is possible.

    Gerry :)

  • just go to the next bike shop and buy - the price can be between 10 - 40 USD wherewer ... i bought in Tesco for 3 EUR, but i live in Slovakia :-)

  • this is NOT how you measure your chain length

  • @TheRdrage sounds like you went to bicycle college

  • minec keeps breaking,any tips?

  • @zakamooza It needs to be replaced.

  • thake 5

  • OMG im looking for the background music since 1987 lmfao what is it pleas haha

  • @BillieJean900 Take Five

  • @xddorox thnx mate ))

  • @BillieJean900 Take Five by the Dave Brubeck Quartet from 1961. There's a video for it on youtube which features a pretty cool drum solo.

  • @mobzapper oh thnx xD i heard it first time on a tape lol and had no idea who sing lol

  • @BillieJean900 Your welcome. I hope you enjoyed the video.

  • @BillieJean900 you could just use track id

  • @zakamooza not working xD

  • A few extra tips: Make sure you go under the "tabs" on the rear derailler when fishing the chain through it and the chain is actually running on the small jockey wheels. Also be careful when popping a rivet that you dont actually push it all the way through or you wont be able to reconnect. #3 if you have a quicklink, use it! #4 Keep the extra links, you may need them later. #5 each time you pop a chain rivet you actually weaken the chain, so don't do it too often.

  • Good video i thought, I recently brought a new chain off ebay used the link tool to push it through but need to shorten it. I see by, from the video, you place the chain first around the small front crank and the last gear on the real wheel so if you measure it to clear that, it will be fine everywhere else. Thanks mate.

  • Thats amazing! I never knew Canadian bikes look EXCACTELY like American bikes. You even talk with the same dialect! Now I'm scared! If Canada ever attacked America, we would be in BIG trouble since we wouldnt be able to easily determine who is Canadian and who is American. WOW! Scary!

  • @nyczumazooma Don't worry about an invasion. We wouldn't want to hurt you guys with free health care.

    Gerry ;)

  • @xddorox lol why do the Americans always talk about invasion?

  • @xddorox Free health care?! Good thing we don't have that in Amer.....damn it.

  • @nelson149 Tell me about it, free health care really sucks. I had a heart attack, the government paid for everything. I never got the chance to get my family into debt or bankruptcy.

  • @xddorox Ugh, that's horrible. You haven't lived until you've suffered a foreclosure.

  • Take Five to remove your chain!

  • im buying a red chain for my bike, guna be sick

  • Done! Thx so much for your help. V helpful video. Salut!

  • im trying this but my i have problems linking the two ends of the chain because the back derailer is pulling the chain away, any tips?

  • i did same thing with the link pin :P but yesterday my chain link bent and i nearly fell on my face :D

now i have 3 missing KMC links on it ;D

  • Ha ha ha..that peace of crap made me smile..he he..thank you for uploading this video. Time to change my chain today.

  • Your technique was amazing. Especially the removal of old chain ;)

  • lol

  • This helped me to make my Giant Boulder a single speed :3

  • Nice mate :) how did you figure out you need that much tension in the derailer?

  • @Nkatsikanis You just have to make sure that the chain doesn't rub on first wheel in the derailleur cage when coming off the second one and you are all set.

    Gerry

  • this son is called Take Five. It is a jazz standard. Really good song.

  • hahaha 1:50

  • OH THAT PEACE OF CRAP !!! 1:50 Please thumbs up if that highered your moral.

  • @tonytober This part of the video only "depicts" what usually happens. The real deal is so bad that I wouldn't even consider putting it in the video. Virgin ears would burn!

    Gerry :)

  • @Dogapsa Don't forget to jerk that link side to side after you are done. This will loosen the link. that last step is vital whenever you reconnect a chain.

    Gerry

  • Thanks a ton just what I needeed

  • Me salvaste la vida amigo gracias, pero ahora prueba a acerlo sin herramientas sin tallercito de ese moderno

  • @NAVA61086 eres bienvenido. Trate de empujar el pasador de cadena con un martillo y un clavo.

  • I like the way to remove an old chain :-D

  • Exelentt!!!!!

  • The optimum way to arrive at the correct length is to have the rear mechanism at 45 degrees when the chain is on the biggest sprocket and the biggest chainwheel. This gives the shortest workable chain length which will give a lower turning weight.

Although the method described will work it will not always give the best length, which will vary depending on which gear ratios are available.

  • What is the name of the song playing in the background? A local jazz band plays that on occasion.

  • Comment removed

  • i just cant put the pin in... like in 3:03

Does the fact that the chain is the one i removed from an older bike matter?

    Maybe the holes are different...

    Any hint?

  • Comment removed

  • whats the name of the thing that u use to cut the chain

  • where can i buy that chain tool?

  • @slipknotbaaam At your local bike shop or look up Park Tools online for the closest retailer.

  • @slipknotbaaam Try amazon.com

  • I LOVE THIS GUY!! 1:50 THE BEST!

  • @QWILDER I'm glad you appreciated my vein attempt at humor.

    Gerry :)

  • i had a chain that was so rusty once i snapped it off with my hands lol + did anyone notice that this guy used different bikes xD and i also have a question my bikes chain links are all welded together (that i can see apart from one) i still want to use my chain i just want to change the derailer i got the chain tool thing and i want to know how can i take it off when i tried to take it off i cant its stuck does anyone know how i can take it off?

  • @1993gandy If the chain is welded, you have to cut it with bolt cutters and replace it.

ps I used the same bike.

    The guy :)

  • @xddorox ok thanks alot for the reply lol i have to give the tool back tomorrow because its not actually mine so it looks like i will have to buy one and a new chain :( and in one bit the bike was grayish colour and some other bits it was red :P but still you explained it well

  • @xddorox It's because the lighting sucks in my workshop!

    Gerry :)

  • @1993gandy no i take that back about different bikes i watched the vid a bit more carfully but like i said in the other comment it was well explained xD

  • Courageux de faire 1 version en FR et en AN :-)

  • @mathieuemi666 Merci :)

  • Just buy the breaker, it's made for the job. Like this video dude.

  • U don't need a link extractor, u can do it many different ways depending on how well eqiuped ur garage or shop is but that 5-10 dollar extractor just makes it's much more convenient, for every job if there is a speciality tool fr affordable price it's best to have it as it's designed to do the job with ease

  • you can do it without a chain link extractor, using a ballpoint hammer and a steel block

  • He's pushing out the pin from the front side, and pushing it back in from the front side as well. Huh?

  • @allardvanw I flipped the chain over so that the pin is facing me. Otherwise it's a real pain.

  • how could i fix my bike without that tool or what u called chain breaker.....could you please make a video teaching how to fix it without chain breaker....thank you very much..

  • @marcsd011 No you can't really and no I can't. You need that tool.

    Gerry

  • YOU PIECE OF CRAP-I use that one too all the time...

  • interesting...i thought chain on the big ring at front and big at the rear?

  • @TheCurls1 Nope, you need zero tension in the chain to figure out the right length.

  • You piece of crap!

    Classic.

  • can i install a chain without a chain breaker?

  • @KeBabyMuzik Yes with a hammer and a nail apparently. I've never tried it myself.

    Gerry :)

  • The more gears you have on the back wheel, the narrower the chain. Specify this when you buy a new chain.

    Gerry :)

  • Are there different types of chains? Does the number of gears you have on your bike determine what chain you have to get?

  • The number of links has nothing to do with it. You have the right chain but you might be 2 links short. I'm surprised since they usually sell them with too many links!

    Gerry :)

  • i have gotten a bike chain, it says on the package that it'll fit a 10-24 speed bike(mine's a 18 speed), but the old chain is 2 links longer than the new one, is it ok ???

  • are there different size chains?

  • Chain Breaker Tool

  • what do u call that thing that makes the chain connects?

  • merci, j'essaie de changer ma chaîne demain, pour la 1ere fois!

  • This was exactly what I needed....No one else explained the derailer part enough.

  • "You piece of crap!!"!#@! lol

  • Piece of crap!! lol gold :)

  • great vid, what make of chain was that? I have a shimano chain which Ive been playing around with and its really hard to put the pins in and out without damaging the links.

  • very helpful - thanks!

  • I need to change my chain, but I can't do this :l

  • Ahaha @ 1:54. Would have been funnier if you went all the way though. I appreciate you taking the time to create these videos for our own knowledge. Very helpful, 5/5.

  • take 5. couldn't remember it. thanks. =) great video

  • Cesur - Shift Guide - Gerade Kettenlinie -

  • haha u pieca crap! funny

  • I'm glad that my futile attempt at humor is appreciated.

    Gerry :)

  • Ah...you... piece a CRAP! Great stuff.

I swear at my stuff all the time.

  • #t=0m45s

  • the chain on my mountain bike is all rusty and i can't remove the chain with the chain tool what should i do, other than using a hedgeclipper to cut the chain completely?

  • a hacksaw?

  • Brilliant vid, and I love your choice of music! :) Thank you!

  • um i dont have that chain braker. so how do i put the chain back in? and i can't find any bike shop around my way. so where else can i get my chain?........... i have a whole lotta question. do u think if i record my bike do u think u can reply back to what im doing wrong. n do u think i can use WD-30 to fix my rusted chain if i dont want to buy a new chain?

  • dont be a stingy bitch and buy a new chain

  • mail order it.;-0

  • You dont want to use WD-40 (I assume thats what you meant) on a chain, WD-40 is a degreaser and you want the opposite a greased chain. You can buy a chain online for 20 bucks too, sometimes chains just gotta be replaced.

  • @sandyapril22 Its late, but for others who are wondering, you can get that chain tool for around $4 at Walmart, right next to the $8 chains.

  • This is applicable to all chains.

  • is this similar to replacing a road bike chain?

  • If you replace the chain and it doesn't skip, you don't have to. If it does, then replace the gear as well.

    Gerry :)

  • Hi Gerry, great Vid, thanks for posting.

Do you need to change the sprocket on the back along with the chain due to wear? Most repair shops suggest this first. (possible extras!) In general do you find you have no problem with slippage with a new chain.

    Take care.

  • awesome video thx for the info, nice humourful explanation :) 5*

  • One side or the other doesn't matter. Chains are not direction specific like what you see on some tires.

    Gerry :)

  • Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this subject. I wonder if the rotation direction of the new chain is indicated by the pin sticking out towards you? If I'm only reusing my old chain after removing to degrease, is it OK to reverse the chain travel, instead of using the chain tool thru the spokes, from the opposite side of the bike? Thanks.

  • You can mess around and try, but I would toss it and shorten the chain one link(if it doesn't affect the chain that much) or replace it with a link from a spare chain.

    Gerry

  • GERRY!!! Great vid, but I have a quick quesiton:

I pushed the link all the way out when I took off my chain (before I had seen this video, i know i know a big mistake). Is there a way to get the link back into the chain, or do I need a new one? I have the chain tool...

  • Any link will do.

  • can the chain tool be used on any link or there is a specific one to "hit"?

  • At your local bike shop.

  • I got one today for 5€. Let's see if and how it'll work. :)

  • were can i get a chain breaker

  • A close up of the chain in the chain tool would be helpful.

  • I've heard of people trying it with a nail and a hammer but haven't done so myself.

    Gerry

  • Ive done this, it is possible, but far from recommended.

  • I do not have the tools for this job but can it be done without them?

  • Great vid, it was really informative.

  • It help me a lot

  • It is a chain tool. In this case a model CT-5 by Park tools.

  • sorry but what is the name of that tool to take of the chain pin...

  • love the desmond in the background!

  • Looked like a Park Tools, chain tool to reassemble the chain pin. A very good chain tool. I have used mine many, many times.

  • were do you find the thing to pop out?

  • You can it says on the bottle.

  • Yes you can use the old chain to have the same lenght. Those are dirt tires.

  • what are those tires used 4 ? street or dirt ?

  • i am a beginner in bike stuff and the part with the correct lenghts seems a bit tricky to me. Can i just deinstall the old chain and hold it next to the new one to see the correct lenghts?

  • It's called a bolt cutter .

  • whats that tool's name what you used to cut off the old chain?

  • You put the chain on the smallest gear so there is no tension on it. WD40 will strip lubricants from your chain long after it's been applied. Avoid this stuff like the plague, regular motor oil is also bad for your chain since it is a magnet for dust and crap. Chain tools can be bought at your local bike shop. Wally world does sell cheapy ones, but they will last you not more than 2 chains. Spend wisely, save money, support your local business and buy a good one the first time out.

    Gerry :)

  • Why do you have to put your chain on the smalles gears? And why can't you use WD40 on your chain?

  • Your problem is that the derailleur needs to be adjusted. Try that before changing the chain and never ever use WD40 on a bike chain.

    Gerry :)

  • why can't you use WD40 on a bike chain?

  • WD40 is a solvent. It dissolves grease and the chain needs grease, not the small amount of lubricant that WD40 leaves behind. But you can use it to clean the chain (tho cheaper to use degreaser).

  • hi, i got sumat wrong wid my bike chain..everytime i change the gear the chain always starts to make a clicking noise n sumtimes comes off..jus wondering shall i change it. ive alredy tried WD-40 but its still da sme.

  • This was insanely helpful. Can't even tell you.

  • You shouldn't hear a snap when you loosen them up. Just verify that the link is working properly when you do this. If the pin comes out of the link, you will have a very hard time putting it back in. Get a new link in there, a lot easier.

    Gerry :)

  • Hey, do you need the Chain Tool, If so, where could i find one? Local bike shop, wal-mart anyplaces with a bike area?

  • Very helpful cheers!

  • my chain dosent have a master link and i was wondering how i would be able to put my chain back together because i cant get the pin back into the link. can anybody help me?

  • You have to get some new chain pins. Got to the bike shop and tell them what you have. They're really cheap.

In reply to the vid: how about the fact that when you work it back and forth you should hear a "snap" as the new pin inserts and lines up properly with the chain?
