  • We have satay in singapore too :D

  • haha!! this one is so old! you're all so young :)

  • It would actually be better if you used sticky or glutinous rice.

    Regards from Malaysia

  • Satay recipe on Malaysian Independence Day :D What a great coincidence.

  • Watch Jamie's reaction when Ben says 'lube' haha! 0:53

  • can i use regular milk or half n half instead of cocunut milk? idk if u say it in the vid but it keeps pausing so its hard 2 watch

  • kudos for putting this up on malaysia's independence day 31st august! from regards from kuala lumpur

  • Nice one..malaysian food :) satayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

  • yayyyy you used Thai brand coconut milk!!! (I'm from Thailand)

  • Could you do another chicken recipe that use an entire chicken as opposed to parts?

  • Very impressed!

  • 0:50

  • lol dont mind the indonesian and malaysian comments...its always like that bcuz we are similar!!!!i love this 'meat skewer' either its from malaysia or indonesia or whatever :p

  • This looks soooo delicious and I can't wait to try it. Problem is; I'm allergic to coconuts (and therefore also coconut milk) - is there anything you can use instead of coconutmilk? :) Thanks, guys!

  • @Charliemissen you can change to full cream milk :)

  • I'm Malay and it's quite weird to see all the shortcuts/cheats but nevertheless, YUUMMMMM~ :D

  • did any one else hear that? peanut butter jelly lol

  • You should come to any Malay countries (I'm from Brunei) and ask around for the best satay shop. You will be satisfied.

  • It's Indonesian actually.. :(

  • @Stuckineverland If you want to be extremely accurate, satay is a variation of the Indian kebab. Kebabs are from Persia, which doesn't exist anymore so satay is from... NOWHERE. Joking aside, satay is definitely Malaysian. Pita bread is Greek, Israeli, Middle Eastern, Balkan, Palestinian, and Turkish food. Hamburgers are from Germany, but it's also American. So yes satay is ALSO Malaysian.

  • @Siowish I know right?! It's so annoying when people get anal about where food comes from. If we were all this stiff, there wouldn't be any diversity in food, because we'd keep to the "original" recipe. I'm a Singaporean Malay and I could care less where satay comes from. If it's good, I'll eat it. But I mean, if they REALLY want to boast about their culture... whatever, then.

  • i totally cracked up at the coconut milk bit xD

  • I'm Malaysian :D

  • i got a suggestion if you don't mind, try substitute the curry paste with Rendang paste if you can find one from the Asian store. it tastes much closer to the real stuff. thanks for sharing btw

  • wow i can't imagine how a shortcut version would taste like, i hope it went well. i really wish i could present you guys with the most authentic satay from the heart of Malaysia, or if anyone of you by any chance visit Malaysia one day, don't forget to try out this delicious dish. yeah Ben's right, it's a Malay food. Chinese food don't use lemongrass and galangal that much. however, there are many variations throughout southeast Asia.

  • like it

  • try eating this with roughly chopped cucumber

  • by the way if you wish to buy it at the shop already made its not white in malaysia or in the shops its brown :L

  • even faster way to do the peanut sauce is to buy it at the shop already made :L

  • Could I sub the peanut butter for soy butter without it altering the taste too much? I'm allergic to peanuts.

  • This dish reminded me a dish that my sister makes - banana chiken. Chiken goes soooo well with banana and curry sauce and rice...

  • Im so happy you corrected the Malay part! im malaysian! =D

  • dirty jamie haha. 'lube'...

  • satay is from malaysia~~!!! YAY~~~~~~~HAHAHAHA

  • ah I'm so roud it's came from my country you should do more indonesian food believe me it's quite interesting to cook.

  • hi, i'm from malaysia. sate is one of my favourite. the funny thing is, you totally change the recipe for the gravy. ;D .but it's fine.

    we don't use coconut milk.

just some blended chilli n onion, coarsely blended peanut, lemondgrass, some sugar, salt, asam jawa paste and water. cook until the it become thick.

    TRY IT!

it will taste sweet, sour and spicy. the lemondgrass make it smell sooo good! enjoy!

  • @pragues90 WOOHOO INDONESIA FTW! :D :D

  • @pragues90 Hahaha I was just about to correct this, Malaysia and Indonesia are so close that a lot of people get their cultures easily confused. I'm glad somebody picked up on it too!! Also, SORTED this looks SO GOOD!!! Have you done any risotto recipes? :)

  • @lanternofcain yeah you're right. btw sorted has a risotto recipe, just search it.

  • @pragues90 Oh cool yay!!! Thanks! ^_^

  • you should try smoking your chicken other than just popping it into the oven. you can also make your own peanut sauce without using coconut milk. just roast/fry some peanuts, put it into food processor/blender, add some water, and also some soy sauce and salt. it tastes really really good.

  • Wait.. Is "satay" supposed to be saute? o:

  • @haloangel31 no its a malaysian sauce to cook meat in, like how we use curry

  • So no idea why but both my mum and I are alergic to Coconut - would it be okay to use regular cream (if so what percentage) or is there something intrinsic to the coconut milk that would make it not work - and since I'm asking a question may as well go all the way, because we are missing out on the Coconut flavour is there anything you would suggest adding spice wise to kick it up a bit? Mushroom powder, celery salt?

  • so if we can't get our hand on curry paste what to we do :S?

  • satay is the beeeest! i love the little malay food place around the corner... with this they're gonna lose some business though!

  • "it's not chinese! it's malaysian!"

  • Yayy to Malaysian dish!! Hugs and love from we Malaysian here :) pssttt.. Just to share u some tips, bang a stick of lemongrass with the back of your knife, and add that to the sauce. Fish it out at the end and there you go, almost like what you'll get here in Malaysia :)

  • I tried making these and I could not stop eating them! The peanut sauce was excellent! The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy and tender inside! It had a LITTLE kick, which I love! Thanks sorted! I'll make more of your recipes next time. XD

  • @AQWorldsFan123 Of all the SORTED recipes this is still a firm favourite with my family. This and the lamb tagine! Try that one next! :D

  • Peanut butter jelly and a baseball bat!! Haha love u jamie!!

  • I love you guys. I enjoy just watching you cook. Can't wait to try some of these myself ~

  • what should someone with a coconut allergy substitute in this?

  • i love this :) im going to university soon and am learning to make tons of your recipes :) do you have a recipe book??????

  • @xXxMysteryLovexXx we have two! ;) Check out our website for UK purchases or links on our facebook page for a company that does international delivery.

  • This is Thai! Not Malasyian!

  • @thefridagee Sorry to say but it is Malaysian.....

  • @mshanissya I eat it at Thai resturants all the time. I think there may be a thai and a malasyian version. The two countries are located rather close to each other. So the cusine might be similar

  • ME MALAYSIAN FTW! REPRESENTIN!

  • Camera man @ 2:00

  • hey its singaporean too!

  • had this the other day! it was gorgeous

we had to fry the chicken though :( and put them on the skewers afterwards (i was adament about the skewers mwahah) so the chicken wasn't as hot as possible while we ate it, but it was still really nice. i can't wait to have it again

    thanks guys!

  • wow i love you guys for this! you actually know that it is Malaysian and not Chinese. Being a Malaysian person, thanks for sharing our delicious food :)

  • Malaysian satay is the best!! But i still gonna try satay, the Sorted way :D

  • It really annoyed when the guy said 'Is this a basic Chinese dish then?' and the cook dude was like 'tuttttt.. it's not Chinese! It's Malaysian' I was like :\ how is he meant to know... hes no food expert.

However, I'm definitely going to cook this for my friends during the summer :)

  • Hey sorted people do you have any recipe books if so where can i get them if not you should really make some theyd be really useful :)

  • AH I love you ben for saying satay is malaysian <3 :)

  • made this yesterday..heaven! Thanks lads, you're making student cooking sooo much more interesting! :) <3

  • This was so delicious! I'll have to show restraint in not making this too often. How do you make coconut milk more fattening? Add peanut butter to it, of course. :)

Since I've started cooking SORTED recipes with some regularity I'm preparing a lot of garlic, and I find that once I've touched it, I can wash my hands over and over and they still smell like the garlic. Is there some trick to getting that smell out of your skin? (special soap, rub them with vinegar, etc?)

    Thanks Sorted Crew!

  • @AllegrettoJane usually just regular soap works... but if it's really bad then squeeze some lemon juice over your hands. That does the job.

  • @sortedfood or washing your hands in cold water as hot water cooks the smell into your fingers :)

  • @AllegrettoJane I know you posted this a few weeks ago but...I have a trick that works for some people. Just get your hands wet and rub them on stainless steel (the faucet or a spoon). It works perfecty for me and gets the smell completely off...however, it does not work for my roommate at all, so no guarantees :( Happy cooking!

  • @AllegrettoJane there are also some stainless steel things you can buy that look like rocks that take away the smell

  • @AllegrettoJane Another trick is to rub your hands on stainless steel. There are some cheap "garlic" bars/ stainless steel garlic rockers out there if you are willing to put in a bit extra.

  • far from malaysian peanut sauce but sounds good :)

  • yuck, peanutbutter :(

  • YAY MALAYSIA! :D

  • i find the idea of using peanut butter in the sauce is great. -greetings from a malaysian

  • dude. i'm able to live because of you.

  • Your recipes are great and all, and I mean no offence saying this but the people you cook with look rather uncomfortable and not very relaxed. This is usually the case in restaurants but try to loosen up a bit. Great recipe btw.

  • PS// Some places serve the rice in compressed cubes, otherwise known as ketupat (a kind of "rice dumpling" in a woven leaf case) to some of us Southeast Asians - google some images! You can make it with a plastic bag though.

It's lovely because you can poke your skewers in the rice cubes and dunk them in the sauce too; and it also tastes a lil' more refreshing than bog-standard rice when eaten on its own (oddly enough.)

Also, suggestion? Diced cucumber on the side too. Refreshing :)

  • Absolutely love how you guys posted this brilliant vid on Malaysia's Independence Day (Aug 31! xD)

On that note, greetings from Malaysia - and no worries, Indons + other Southeast Asians; we can all share the credit (!)/love for satay here. No harm done. :)

  • oh dear God... malaysian dish or indonesian dish, WHO CARESSS!!!! it still tastes AMAZING weither its malaysian or indonesian... the dish's taste doesnt depend on which country it originated from...

  • The look at after 0:52 he says lube xD

  • What happned to your finger?? Anyway it makes me soooooo hungry! I will try it!

  • I LOVE Thai food! It is probably my favorite...but, I like it all.

  • i usually add chilli paste to the peanut sauce. it give you a little bit of a kick. i guess thats how we malays like them. even though im malay, i still don't know how to make satay. great that i've found this video! thanks ben!

    greetings from singapore!!

  • its always so entertaining how messy jamie is! :D

  • I made this. It was absolutely delicious

  • it's not a Malaysian dish. it's an Indonesian dish. And around here we spell it "Sate"

  • it's a Malaysian Dish?

Satay was invented by JAVANESE (Indonesian) street vendors, based on satay becoming popular after the influx of Arab immigrants in the early 19th century, look it up

  • "yeah, I'm left-handed... AUW!" haha that make me chuckle

  • Comment removed

  • i'm not sure about other countires but over here in Singapore, our satay sauces actually have some minced pineapple in them and I do think they taste better with the fruit! Would you recommend adding pineapple to the sauce and if so, how? :)

  • i was wondering if you could do a homemade summer cool drink? i'd appreciate it if you could!

  • Mmmmm satay. This is the third sortedfood recipe I've tried and probably my favorite so far, although next time I think I might try putting a little soy sauce in the peanut mixture.

  • @googoopanda Soy Sauce... nice idea! Be careful though as peanut butter is already very salty. But a little bit would be a nice touch. What other recipes have you tried?

  • Try replacing some of the water with coconut milk when you cook the rice... :D

  • @Azzurae nice little tip! Or another one... if you ever peel any fresh ginger stick the peelings into the water too and fish them out at the end. Adds a great subtle flavour! :D

  • @Azzurae that would be nasi lemak then.. hey, you might try that as well, chef sorted.

  • can i ask you what happened to your index finger? you always have a plaster on it. big fan of the recipes btw :D

  • what to do if peanuts are more aveable then peanut butter

btw can u gril it in a microwave becouse i have made a lasanja in it

  • :O... I just realised you guys go up to 1080hp!!! High Definition Food....mmmmm

  • I like how it was uploaded on Malaysia's national day :P

  • Using peanut butter instead of real peanuts for the sauce won't make the sauce as nice as the original though. D:

Though I understand this is a shortcut, so I guess it would do. :D

    THIS PROUD MALAYSIAN SALUTES YOU!

  • everytime i look at ur videos i want to make it butim 2 lazy 2 get up

  • just a suggestion.. if you add some chili paste as well then it'll taste more like the malaysian version, and it give it a really nice vibrant color :)

  • he said ' malaysian ' !!

im from malaysian and im a fan of Sorted !!

  • How long should the chicken be cooking for? At what temperature?

  • @friendstofriends If you need any of the details... then check it out on our website... we put a handy link in the description of each video for you guys.

  • @sortedfood

    i checked... it didnt specify

  • If i'm at home (currently procrastinating at faculty's library), I'll just go to my neighbour and buy the pre-marinated chickens (they're satay hawkers) and just fry it... Its taste exactly the same and more juicy (and fattening I know) :) I try not to grill to much these days

  • hey,i'm from malaysia and i can proudly testify tht satays are yummy and the peanut sauce is pretty good as well. As a side dish we usually chop some onions and cucumber with glutinous rice! So heavenly! :D

  • i don't have curry paste, can i change it to something else?

  • what's the blue thing on his finger?

  • being a Malay, a good sate with ketupat (rice squares), onions, cucumber and peanut sauce is heavenly

  • What sort of curry paste did you use?

  • Yum, I'm starving. I dare you guys to try making Filipino food... If you haven't already.

  • Don't tell me you put the lid in the bin :( Waste of good cream coconut :(:(:(:(

  • Can you use metal type skewers?

  • @DahDahWahWahDah If you have them then the metal skewers are even better as they heat up and help to cook the chicken from the inside too!

  • Is there a good substitute for the nuts? I'm allergic.

  • is the sauce really peanuttty(<--lol) cos i HATE peanut butter..but love satay will i taste it at all?

  • @Runescape01Guthix If you like satay, you'll love this! Its rich, creamy and nutty with a little spice. Try it! :D

  • Could you put the chicken and tikka paste in the fridge overnight to marinade?

  • @DahDahWahWahDah It's even better if you do! :D

  • LOL "it's not chinese! it's malaysian"

    looks awesome and easy!

  • HAHA "..just gonna lube that up..." .. I love the other guys face.. he like looks at the camera like "you guys hear that?!" hahahah so great.

  • Do you have to add peanut butter to the sauce? And Oh! Great work with all your vidoes, could you make one of Chicken Tikka Bites?

  • Very good, but how long should I cook the chicken skewers and sauce for?

  • Aww That's so cool! My mum comes from Malaysia! This video just made me proud to be Asian again. I live in Singapore now and satay is pretty much a weekly thing for me. But in Singapore and Malaysia, the good ol traditional satay is cooked over charcoal bbq-style rather than cook it in the oven. I like your reinterpretation of the satay sauce btw. Traditional peanut sauce usually looks very different from that, more brownish, but still, it looks good! Kudos to you brother!!!

  • I cheat when I make the sauce. I just mix peanut butter with some soy sauce.

  • Rather different from traditional satay but I'm sure it has its great flavours too.

  • I love satay. The Indonesian type is my favorite, but it's always hard to find. I love peanut sauce. My mom made it with peanut butter once, and it wasn't great. But this looks great, especially because is kind of food is so hard to make.

  • that was good but it would have been more helpful if you told us the oven temp and time.

  • @cSlade576 yeah so trrue but click the link in the describtion it gives some more instructions

  • Ahhhh, I LOVE you! I am from Malaysia and satays are my favourite food! I was so shocked to hear that you knew where it came from (cause let's face it, not many people know of tiny Malaysia). I loved this. :D This is awesome.

  • how can i make rice that has separate grains when cooked, and not all clumped together?

  • @saqibd123new The easiest way is to add the amount of rice you want to plenty of salted boiling water - like loads more water than you need. Then after 8-10 minutes taste the a grain of rice and when you're happy it's cooked drain the whole pan into a collander. Run the rice under hot water to get rid of excess starch and job done. :D Hope that helps... let us know how you get on!

  • @sortedfood Protip - wash the rice three times in clean cold water before you cook it = awesome non globby rice :)

  • Have you thought about something like a healthy home made pot noodle for a recipe?

  • jamie is hilarious! love this video :)

  • OH YEAH!!!!!!! This is so awesome, you guys are doing satay! This is a Malaysian dish! And I'm a Malaysian too!! We can get a lot of sate here but not many of us do this at home, we love to eat satay at the restaurants cause satay are usually made in large portion for a group of people but to see your take on the 'sambal' and satay is just awesome, they look great though we don't usually have it with steamed rice but whatever! Good job guys! I am so happy to see this video!

  • My mum cooks these all the time <3 So yummeh :P

  • really great vid, its the first one i saw from your list and is instantly subscribed, if i try this ill tell you how it went =D

  • Cooked this tonight for my other half who absolutely adores chicken satay...apparently I cooked it better than our fave Chinese takeaway!! Yeee! Thanks for the recipe guys. Will be trying out a lot more of your meals from now on :0)

  • Okay, then the chef said 'lube it up' -his mate gave a funny look at the cam, ah dear, lol.

  • @TsiniWeeny I scrolled down to the comments to find at least one about that :)

  • mmm i love getting this at restaurants...i'll deffinitly try to make this at home :D

  • Going go make this now Will tell you how it goes!

  • @DoomFist94 nothing wrong with that at all! Although sometimes dishes benefit from different cooking stages and pots. Just don't make life overcomplicated. Why don't you try one of our recipes and cook it for ur mum?!?

  • haha....im malaysian...and seriously satay is very delicious

  • Looks good! Will be trying this some time :D

  • actually it's not malaysian as well... they originated from Indonesia, although they are very popular in most southeast asian countries

  • I actually love you guys for doing these recipes - will all be so good for when I go to uni in a couple of weeks =D x

  • Could you make a video on how to make plain fluffy rice? Whenever I try I fail horribly @____@

  • @LeoDeGrand Deal! We've had a lot of requests for recipes... but next time we make one with rice I'll be sure to detail exactly how to do it for you! :D

  • @sortedfood Thankyou! :D

  • @sortedfood I dont know if this counts, but I can provide a recipe for a VERY tasty risotto! :D

    It got rice in it!

  • yummy!!

    hehe blue plasters ftw!!

  • LOL at jamies face when ben said lube, looks tasty though!
