i dont understand why the quality is so poor in this video but so much better on others, also using a canon 500D... watch?v=EkHt13euYMQ&feature=related
@MariluLane - are you viewing it at 720p? Remember, this was one of the first videos posted anywhere from the 500D, and was taken entirely hand-held with the 18-200mm on one day. Since then I've started to focus more on testing video functions, as further DSLRs have incorporated video.
@daviddkilpatrick ah i think you're right, it is ten times better on 480p even... although i was able to watch that other video on 360p with crystal clear quality... although i do think my browser can't generally handle 480p and above, a few 500D videos stop every few seconds at higher p rate... hmmm all v curious ;) hehe
and may i ask why you chose that lens? were u supplied with the standard 18-55mm? :)
@MariluLane - this was a loan review camera for a magazine report. Canon supplied it with the 18-200mm. This is not a very good lens, and the newer (non-USM) 18-135mm has a better type of stabilisation for video.
@daviddkilpatrick ok, thanks for the information, its all very new to me so taking a while to get accustomed, thank u for helping me on the journey!!! :)
i want to play with te focus when it records, so that the background is sharp and the front is unsharp or the athor way round... sorry for my bad english! :) please answer!
It can take a still, but this interrupts the video with roughly 1 second of lost video and sound. No autofocus is possible when filming. 720p is better for moving subjects as the 20fps 1080p setting can be a bit jerky. Quality on the Canon is poor compared to Nikon videos due to very high compression and powerful noise reduction - the actual images are not very detailed at all. They look OK when played though.
No filter used - do you mean photographic, audio or post-process digital? Filter means so many things. It can record until a 4GB card is full, officially about 20 minutes max at 20fps. Less at 30fps. Might shut down due to overheat in some conditions. The Nikon D5000, which I prefer for image quality despite being only 720p, is limited to 5 mins. Also it has a very poor mic/audio function, Canon better for concerts and gigs.
I rendered in Quicktime using iMovie 09's standard output setting for YouTube HD broadband. No choice of codec was made, that was left to iMovie. In any case, whatever codec is used, YouTube recompresses the file to their own standards and delivers it as a Flash video stream. So you don't get to see the original, even at maximum YouTube quality or by downloading.
Heyy david did you render in quicktime? did you use any codecs? Like H264 or mpeg4? Thank 4 sharing nice video! Im experimenting rite now withe my 500d. You know trying 2 find the best codecs ;-)
The river scenes, angler, mower, market, supermarket travelators and interview were at 720. The bridge and horse were at 1020. But iMovie obviously sizes down to match - I chose 720p output. They all look great in my Sony VPL-EW5 projector and on the Mac.
Please do view at HD - the processing is careful compared to some of the samples I've seen on YouTube so far. I am not a video shooter, though back in the 1970s I made 16mm industrial films. So my apologies for the incorrect technique!

Were the sounds of this video captured with the stock microphone of the camera, or were you using an external microphone?
tk10 1 year ago
@tk10 - the built-in mic. I used external mics later on. This is all with the onboard mic.

Yes, you can easily change focus manually. It works well enough. It helps to have a fast lens like the 50mm f/1.8 to do this accurately.

has this camera manual fous while recording?

what is the maximum length of time you can keep shoot a vedio?
songming8473 2 years ago
29 mins i think
siLaRoo 2 years ago
that depends on how big your memory is.
i use 16 gigs, and can get about 30 minutes on lowest quality.

@songming8473
Depends on your memorycard

Hi, nice video !
Can this camera take a photo while recording ?
Is there an automatic autofocus mode for the video with this camera ?
Can you see a difference between 720p and 1080p recording ? (fluidity of the video and Quality)
I hope you will answer to my every questions !
Thank you very much.

Did you use some kind of filter during or after the recording?
