Gonna see them April 19th at Philips Arena. It's my birthday present to me/surprise to my dad. He's a Van Halen fanatic. He'll shit bricks when I tell him on my birthday. =]
he mixed it with chorus and echo effect to make this sound and he turned the volume louder and softer as he went throughout the song aka volume swelling
Because using pedals is alot different. He wouldnt have control over when it fades in/out, and it probably wouldnt sound the same. It's all tapped anyway, if you do it right it sounds picked.
So EVH is basically using his fist as a bow on the strings of his guitar? he produces a very violin/cello-like sound when he plays this way... amazing.
huge evh fan here, but don't see why this has 5 stars...i would expect more out of him if he were sitting on his couch playing in front of the tv. don't know if he's drunk or not but he's definitely not putting anything into this.
yeah, joe definitely has some VH in him...as he will atest to himself. vai as well, although vai developed more his own style of playing which is unique to him, but yes vai, satriani, rhodes, and even malmsteen all were influenced by the first VH record, although they went on to do their own unique brilliant thing with the guitar.
I was at this show. The sound board went out during Eddie's solo. It was pretty cool because he kept playing, then realized it was out and motioned for Horace the sound tech to fix it.

this tour was right after or before his hand surgery if Im not mistaken. Also a different bout of cancer and a divorce prior to that.

This is an interesting, more subdued version of Cathedral. Not his best, but still good.

some people call it "sloppy playing" Its really called "Improvising"

This video does not do the actual experience justice. It was purely incredible.

Alot of mistakes in this one. Was it him or the guitar screwing up? Or both?

i was being technical....
liquidman2 2 years ago
So am I. Killswitching cuts the sound completely, instantly. He's raising and lowering the volume gradually, or "swelling" it.

For those of you who don't know how he's doing it, here is the breakdown:
-Amp DIMED for the clean high gain sound.
-Tapping, not picking, or even pulling off, so to have clean, organic, rounded sound
-Very quick volume swells with nob - cleaner, easier, and more effecient than pedal
-ANALOG delay - set to "slap-back" setting
throw in the talent, and you have "cathedral'

i do pretty much agree with ya, but check out jeff becks guitar shop same title only good song i know from him
strother1969 2 years ago
i would think you'd need really nice active pickups to do that, he's not even picking
also, there a lots of fx pedals which have a slow attack effect, why not use that?

Nah, He is turning the volume knob up and down to give the notes a slow attack, and with his fretting hand he is just playing hammer-ons.
