Miku and Rei Lived if u remeber in the last part rei is in her house where she finds the secret attic in mikus room just after she found keis ashes shes still sleeping in her bed and hasent turned to ashes which means she didnt completly die plus thts miku and rei talking about why they survived at the end and shows them at the bech watching the sunset together but no one knoes if mio made it out of the dream but kei died and it dosent matter cause i didnt rly like him

if u beat the game on the unlockable difficulty (soulslayer wich is hard x10) u get the ending where kei and mafuyu come back but rei and mio don't they stay and bare the tattoo so that mafuyu and kei can come back in my opinion that is the best ending cuz usually some games are sexist against men so yea i like soulslayer ending

The "true endings" are normally the first endings you get when you beat the game.

Take FF1. The true ending is where Miku leaves Mafuyu behind with Kirie.

And as you said, in FF2, the true ending is where Mio performs the Crimson Sacrifice with Mayu, resulting in the butterfly.

So. Rei coming out as the last (wo)man standing is the true ending.

Tecmo just likes making multiple endings in their games. Doesn't mean all of 'em are happy endings, though. ;)
