@jackobitepratt ...the heart says 'yes', the imagination says 'yes' ; to see the lion rampant rise again; to see the saltire furling in the breeze above loyal Scotsmen truly stirs the blood......but the head say 'be careful'; will it be President Salmon or will the Stewart descendants return to the throne?; will it be the euro or the Scots pound?...+ a thousand other questions.. not a decision to be made over a few drams..... Independence 'Yes'....maybe.....
@Honour42GB our quite right.questions must be asked to ensure we know what we are getting into. But, if Scotland does not take her independence this time, will she get the chance again? Your right. the heart says 'yes'. the imaginations say 'yes'. and the head says, 'be careful, but yes'.
I doubt that the euro will be succesful in Scotland, but it is important to look at such matters closley. As for President Salmon or the Stewerts, i am not sure. What do you think?
@jackobitepratt ..No.1...I fiercely believe that every man has the right to self determination within the rule of law and that governments (as has been said before) should be 'of the people, by the people, for the people'. If Scotland gains independence I see a great advantage to a return of the throne. It raises Scotland from being just another country with a president, who nobody remembers, to being a sovereign state, it brings continuity and tradition.Worth more than it costs.
@jackobitepratt ..No 2 Scotland has much to offer and also much to lose. Cutting the ties with the United Kingdom may seem to correct past wrongs, but that blood has been shed and the tears have long since dried. It is time to look to the future. Can Scotland stand alone? I doubt it. Does Scotland want to be like Greece under the heel of Brussels or to become a porn in America's 'New world Order'. If the Bildeberg group gets it's greasy paws on Scotland, then God help you...
@jackobitepratt ...No 3.. Maybe a better way to go would be for Scotland to become a separate and independent sovereign nation within Great Britain. This would require a repeal or re-writing of the act of union. Scotland and England cannot and should not ever part, the past is the past and history spurs on great patriotic fervour but surely the future should be side by side,on equal terms, making an even stronger and greater Britain..(this will cause some comments...help!)
.....after the battle defeated highlanders, some cleaved and bloody struggling, weary, exhausted and so sad, back to their bothies, only to be pursued by British redcoats throughout the hills and glens. Banned from wearing the plaid, banned from bearing arms and forced to submit allegiance to King George. Then came the highland clearances, that vicious time of evictions & deportations. But now over 250yrs later freedom is within their grasp, if they want it. Scotland can rise again.
@imagineers0 they wernt ,just the jacobites, highland scots following a catholic prince, who as well as the scots crown, wanted the english crown to,he invaded england to march on london, the lowland scots themselves didnt want a catholic monarch, and fought against the jacobites to.,
The majority were certainly not Scots on the Hanoverian side and there were hardly any English on the Jacobite site - only the small Manchester Regiment - those Jacobite English who survived were hanged, drawn and quartered for treason, irrespective of rank. Despite the random butchery and complete destruction of their culture and way of life, that fate was not applied to the ordinary Highlanders.
Though there were some Scots in the ranks of the Hanoverian Government forces at Culloden - strict Presbyterian Covenanters and their Campbell allies - Cumberland was rather contemptuous of them - he kept them back from the action. He certainly didn't trust them and didn't like them. In the ethnic cleansing of the Highlands that followed, loyalist clans and rebels suffered alike. The same clearances, prohibitions and deportations applied to them all.
The Scots really took a kicking here, there were even scots clans fighting scots, but the wierdest part of the battle was at the end when the English wouldnt let the wounded scots be recovered, then they bayoneted and canoned every scot on the field.............crazy stuff

The singers are obviously unaware of the realties of war. Nobody dies with "pride and dignity." Men die many ways - screaming, crying, calling for their mothers - or just drop with a sigh. One guy I remember said, "It hurts real bad, sir." They fall shot to shit, or are torn to bloody ribbons, or minus a limb or their heads. There is no "pride and dignity" in war or death in general, people. Just horror and ugliness.
It's not the physical act that they're describing.....it's the fearless nature in which they faced death.....which for many was guaranteed... would you not want to die fighting for something you believe in?

@liampett Most Scots did not even support the Jacobites in anyway. All the lowlanders were against the highland Jacobites. The British army that fought the Jacobites had 3 Scottish battalions in it (and one Irish).
Thought you might appreciate also this fine modern classic ("Culloden's Harvest") written by Scottish minstrel Alastair McDonald (though it's often wrongly attributed as "traditional"), and performed here in an impeccably understated way by Alastair himself.

no comment this is rly sad story and song too i wish i am from scotland or ireland rly love it ..this song means alot to me i am from serbia but in my heart i am them !!thx
That was alot like many of the clans. Not all were Blood kin or renters of land. Or Slaves as is commonly taught. There was more to it than that. Then blood joined in as clan-folk were married. And often formed alliances through those marriages. If you are a Celt at heart. Then you are accepted as a Celt in blood. We all came from the same loins anyway.
@osrik100 thanks for the comment mate this song makes me cry as i feel this right to the heart for all who died on this battle field cheers respect you u my friend
I feel this video inspires me alot and it should inspire you as well.I find this video is making me replay it over and over again and listening to the detail written throught the song and explaining how brave these men were for going to battle to save there land. This video should teach people not to be selfish and realize that these men left there children and there spouses at home even knowing that they may never see the next birthday, the next newborn,or the next anniversary.-soldiers,Thank You
oh. you mean the british army, the one controlled by the english government. obviously scotland does have a regiment or two, but i wouldnt call it an army.
You are such a thick twat that you don't realise that the majority of his army was made up of Scots. Culloden was not a Scotland v England battle. Go get an education before commenting on something you clearly don't understand. Thicko!
from hanover which at the time was a british province, as a result of the royal family, whose real name is saxe-coburg-gotha, so they were british, thus resulting in the british victory over the scottish rebels.
Cumberland was inept. He won because of the failings of Charlie not because he was a good leader. If Charlie had listened to Lord Murray then the outcome would have been very different.
Cumberland went on to lose major battles in Europe after Culloden and was shown to be a bit of a clown.
I'm an American who is very proud of my Scottish ancestry but there is this one person (gaelicscots) who has something derogatory to say to any American if they so much as write it down so that is why I made that remark to my friend geobell, who lives in Glesga. It is a running joke between the two of us.
The problem was that Bonnie Prince Charlie didn't listen to Lord Murray who recommended that they didn't take on Cumberland at Culloden but to wait for the remainder of his men to arrive and to take them on nearer to Nairn. Culloden was a marsh that didn't suit the Highland Charge.
Actually you got that wrong, Murray did try to fight the Governement army at Nairn, the night before Culloden. A long 10 mile march through the woods at night. The army was so string out they cancelled the attack and did not arrive back at culloden till morning, tired and exhausted, which was just another nail in the cofin for them, so to speak. Murray then advised a retreat further into the Highlands, which Charlie ignored, though it could be clearly seen that the moor was not the place to be
they ran a cross marsh ground and die cos of it , and b4 you start with you dont know what your going on about my last name is MacArthur some of the high landers who was at the battle of Culloden we also fought for Robert the Bruce as well.
Great song and video! if you are standing there, just to hear the wind.. but you can feel you are not alone.. we never should forget whats happend there, never to forget all this brave and proudly man.
Honour is right. there is a referendum coming up. Vote for scottish independence. If You want scotlands independence, you can get it!

You are such a thick twat that you don't realise that the majority of his army was made up of Scots. Culloden was not a Scotland v England battle. Go get an education before commenting on something you clearly don't understand. Thicko!

but in reality who won?
alfredromanov 2 years ago
The Hanovarians. Who were of German desent.
Kirty33 2 years ago
from hanover which at the time was a british province, as a result of the royal family, whose real name is saxe-coburg-gotha, so they were british, thus resulting in the british victory over the scottish rebels.

And if you check you will find there was Irish, English and French in the Jacobite army

yet they still lost
alfredromanov 2 years ago
hilarious. you know im right so you resort to insults. how very scottish.

Cumberland was inept. He won because of the failings of Charlie not because he was a good leader. If Charlie had listened to Lord Murray then the outcome would have been very different.
Cumberland went on to lose major battles in Europe after Culloden and was shown to be a bit of a clown.
He didn't win at Culloden, Charlie lost it.

I would say something about Scottish ancestry, but that would probably bring gaelicscots out again. lol. Beautiful song though.

He hasn't been to this video yet.

Let's hear what you have to say about Scottish ancestry.
Kirty33 2 years ago
I'm an American who is very proud of my Scottish ancestry but there is this one person (gaelicscots) who has something derogatory to say to any American if they so much as write it down so that is why I made that remark to my friend geobell, who lives in Glesga. It is a running joke between the two of us.
EvilEvaMarie 2 years ago
Okay, thanks. I wish some Scots were as proud of their ancestry as the Americans.
Kirty33 2 years ago
I think the Scots should be very proud of who they are, I think there are always some who aren't though, no matter where you're from. Sad but true.

Kirty33 2 years ago
great comment kirty33 lord andrew murray is one of my ancestors...charlie should have taken a bullet
stevom31 2 years ago
Actually you got that wrong, Murray did try to fight the Governement army at Nairn, the night before Culloden. A long 10 mile march through the woods at night. The army was so string out they cancelled the attack and did not arrive back at culloden till morning, tired and exhausted, which was just another nail in the cofin for them, so to speak. Murray then advised a retreat further into the Highlands, which Charlie ignored, though it could be clearly seen that the moor was not the place to be
