Welcome to the Machine- referring to Syd in his return to Floyd. Awesome writers, and musicians who actually aren't afraid to be human. The machine is the commercial music industry...something Roger was not too happy about I believe. The man has principals!
@PinkFloydGuitarist Originally created using an EMS VCS3 synth, Xils Labs’ cool and quirky PolyKB virtual analog synth, a faithful representation of the extremely rare RSF PolyKobol.
I dislike this version - I think that the instrumentation is pretty poor compared to the original song. And the gospel choir spoils the song's mysterious atmosphere . Roger could have done better ....
in my opinion ; this machine song has a connection with Erick Fromms Mega machine idea.. or mega machine concept... he is defining this machine in his writing `escape from freedom`.. and also rogers line is very similar with him..
I don't think we'll see Floyds together once more... but watching Roger's performances can give you some sort of thrill.... even if David isn't there..

(though even that is mostly written by himself)... but just watch the frking show... it is absolutely mind blowing, i went twice in 3 days.. and i was contemplating going to other cities to watch it over and over again.. best stage show there will be for decades to come ..
@koushymama Haha, unfortunately he doesn't come here until May -11, so I'm waiting patiently to review the show, but I wasn't expecting anything but mindblowing
I'm just not sure what you're arguing for? I haven't said anything about the production, my point was about the music, and the chemistry in the band
@KalleEricson31 Clarifying... Roger was the songwriter, the poet. He wrote (almost) all the lyrics. David was the musician, guitar god and amazing voice!!
@Kuhlyedascope69 The only song Gilmore recorded bass on was Hey You. I would really like to know what source you get your info from so I could tell them they are full of SHIT!!!
Oh, and it was Rogers idea to have David record that bass part due to the fact it was being played on a fretless. Rogers idea, Davids playing.
Well, besides guitars of all sorts, he plays the piano and keyboards. He plays bass (including fretless). He actually played bass guitar on many of the Pink Floyd tracks that one would assume Roger is playing on, and has indirectly won many a magazine bass-playing poll! He plays harmonica and drums, is learning saxophone, and he also plays a mean kazoo. Think Corporal Clegg and his wooden leg. On his new album, David plays a cumbus – a Turkish stringed instrument, rather like a banjo.
@ryanwalsh69 Im gonna get blasted here, but I honestly think Syd is overrated as some kind of "mythical legend of rock"
Sure, he was the original frontman for PF and had some interesting tunes, but lets face it, it wasnt until Roger David and the rest of the band started writing DSOTM that Pink Floyd became timeless.
@kingwilliamorange The thing your not seeing is that both David and Roger (Waters) whole career was defined by their search for answers related to questions Syd evoked in them. For that Syd is beyond genius.....
@RailRocketJr Yes, I see your point. I used to be obsessed with PATGOD and I am familiar with how everything went down with Syd and how his story changed the rest of band forever, but it is still Roger David Richard and Nick that made the real good stuff.
@kingwilliamorange Must say I don't really like Syd either. He was good and all, but after he left, Floyd became Floyd. Without what happened to him Floyd would have not been the same, but it was Dvae, Rick, Roger, and Nick that made that great music that is still listened to today. When do you hear Scarecrow on the Radio?
@rushrulez1 cant argue with that, but u shudnt hate syd barrett, he went through a lot and fell apart, but waters went through even more trying to keep him together
my dad spoke with Roger Waters in the Taj hotel in India, he worked hard to keep Syd together, and was torn apart when Syd didnt recognize him when he was recording Shine on You Crazy Diamond
@REvenzo2 I don't hate him, and he was good and everything, but I liked floyd after Dave got there and Syd was on the way out. It's like iron maiden, Paul was a good singer, and they had great tunes, but it wasn't until Bruce came that the band became great.
I do want to add to my previous post that I believe probably none of the songs we all love would sound the same, or even be as good, without the other essential band members. I apologize for sounding long-winded. I guess what I mean to say is:
I understand people wanting to believe that Gilmour contributed so much, I would too. But the truth, as I understand it from interviews and biographies, is that Roger Waters wrote most of the music as well.Gilmour has even admitted that he didn't contribute as much, that roger was the driving force, and dear Mr. Wright (may he rest in peace)even admits that he didn't push his material much. Roger has quite a strong personality as I understand.None of this takes away from their undeniable talent.
@MrGuitarNut41 That is for The Wall and Animals. But even on The Wall a lot of stuff went uncredited for others and credit went to Roger.Producer Bob Ezrin also wrote some music like Is there anybody out there? and i think he played piano in Nobody home, but overall yea i think Roger was alot more involved in Floyd than the rest of them.Still they need to make music together to sound like Floyd.
@WilliamTheBearded when u find out where to get the dvd, it has to b out there, or maybe off his web site, now this is the concert i wish i wouldve gone 2, i didnt think it would b as good as gilmores extravagent performances, boy was i wrong, this doyle brahm or whatever his name is, where did roger find him, brilliant ! when not lookin, u cant even tell the damn difference, guy's awesome for singing and playin some of gilmores parts in the songs. just wish he was doin the wall that im goin 2
the sum was always greater than the parts.... Pink Floyd is not what it is without the combination of Water's vision and Gilmour's voice/guitar sound. Enjoy the music for what it is and go see the music live while you still can.
Roger Waters, main lyricist, did not write all music. DSOTM tracks: (1) Speak To Me - Music: Nick Mason Instrumental Arrangement (2) Breathe - Music: Waters, Gilmour (3) On the Run - Music: Gilmour, Waters (4)Time - Music: Mason, Wright, Gilmour, Waters (5) Great Gig In The Sky - Music: Richard (6) Money - Music: Roger Waters (7) Us And Them - Music: Richard Wright (8) Any Colour You Like - Music: Gilmour, Wright, Mason (9) Brain Damage - Music: Roger Waters (10) Eclipse - Music: Roger Waters
I have to admit, i like Gilmour and Wright the most of PF, BUT I Like Roger as brilliant song writer too. However, his voice is weak and it always was, and doesn't fit for rock music at all. For opera maybe. Gilmour version of this song played on 1989 sounds much more better, because of his voice mostly. Have nothing against Roger.
@losercara666 Those bitches you are referring too , are some of the best backing singers in the business. Show a little respect for them, and for yourself.

@KalleEricson31 Let's not forget Syd Barret, He wa the reason it all came to be.
ryanwalsh69 1 year ago
@ryanwalsh69 Im gonna get blasted here, but I honestly think Syd is overrated as some kind of "mythical legend of rock"
Sure, he was the original frontman for PF and had some interesting tunes, but lets face it, it wasnt until Roger David and the rest of the band started writing DSOTM that Pink Floyd became timeless.
kingwilliamorange 1 year ago
@kingwilliamorange The thing your not seeing is that both David and Roger (Waters) whole career was defined by their search for answers related to questions Syd evoked in them. For that Syd is beyond genius.....
RailRocketJr 1 year ago
@RailRocketJr Yes, I see your point. I used to be obsessed with PATGOD and I am familiar with how everything went down with Syd and how his story changed the rest of band forever, but it is still Roger David Richard and Nick that made the real good stuff.
kingwilliamorange 1 year ago
@kingwilliamorange Must say I don't really like Syd either. He was good and all, but after he left, Floyd became Floyd. Without what happened to him Floyd would have not been the same, but it was Dvae, Rick, Roger, and Nick that made that great music that is still listened to today. When do you hear Scarecrow on the Radio?
rushrulez1 1 year ago
@rushrulez1 cant argue with that, but u shudnt hate syd barrett, he went through a lot and fell apart, but waters went through even more trying to keep him together
my dad spoke with Roger Waters in the Taj hotel in India, he worked hard to keep Syd together, and was torn apart when Syd didnt recognize him when he was recording Shine on You Crazy Diamond
REvenzo2 11 months ago
@REvenzo2 I don't hate him, and he was good and everything, but I liked floyd after Dave got there and Syd was on the way out. It's like iron maiden, Paul was a good singer, and they had great tunes, but it wasn't until Bruce came that the band became great.

I do want to add to my previous post that I believe probably none of the songs we all love would sound the same, or even be as good, without the other essential band members. I apologize for sounding long-winded. I guess what I mean to say is:
This band f***ing rocks.
MrGuitarNut41 1 year ago
I understand people wanting to believe that Gilmour contributed so much, I would too. But the truth, as I understand it from interviews and biographies, is that Roger Waters wrote most of the music as well.Gilmour has even admitted that he didn't contribute as much, that roger was the driving force, and dear Mr. Wright (may he rest in peace)even admits that he didn't push his material much. Roger has quite a strong personality as I understand.None of this takes away from their undeniable talent.
MrGuitarNut41 1 year ago
@MrGuitarNut41 That is for The Wall and Animals. But even on The Wall a lot of stuff went uncredited for others and credit went to Roger.Producer Bob Ezrin also wrote some music like Is there anybody out there? and i think he played piano in Nobody home, but overall yea i think Roger was alot more involved in Floyd than the rest of them.Still they need to make music together to sound like Floyd.

Do you know where and when it was taped?
Nice version but the female voices don't suit the spirit of the song at all!

the sum was always greater than the parts.... Pink Floyd is not what it is without the combination of Water's vision and Gilmour's voice/guitar sound. Enjoy the music for what it is and go see the music live while you still can.
floydsteaks 1 year ago

Waters is the lyrics and the soul of Pink Floyd, Gilmour is the music and the voice of Pink Floyd...in my opinion.
