I'm sure you could make bandages using this method, but it's probably not the best way. If I was to model it using polygons and if it is going to be wrapped around something.. like an arm or a leg.. I would probably start with a plane and extrude an edge going around the arm and further down for each step.. or use my "Twist Modeling technique" to get a proper base for tweaking and adding irregularities.

I would either way end up in ZBrush.
