This is terrible. This song:

A. Has absolutely no range, and does nothing for Kristen's coloratura sound.

B. Stephen Schwartz is just awful.

C. This song is a convention purely about spectacle...and works wonderfully in the film, but does nothing for an audience when out of context.

D. Amy Adams did beautifully with this song. Kristen needs to stick to "Glitter and Be Gay" (which by the way, she has the definitive version in the PBS airing of "Candide").

I've held back from watching this til now. I've heard a lot of people slate this but frankly that was amazing!!!! I think the "problem" here is that Kristin didn't act like a Disney princess at all. And, actually, she didn't do much acting at all--this was strictly a musical performance, as it should have been. The song was the main focus here, after all. After watching this, though, it became pretty clear to me that you have to act "animated" like Amy Adams had to as Giselle. Otherwise the song is flat or "off" somehow on its own, even if someone excellent like Kristin is singing it. :(

Ok for people who think it's strange for Amy Adams to have not sung the songs, it is done all of the time. For example, in any movie that Audry Hepburn 'sang' in, it was actually someone else. And the reason that Amy Adams did not sing is because although she was the actress that was requested for Giselle, she did not have the ideal Disney princess singing voice or the range that ended up being needed. Not that she didn't want to. In fact she went in the job thinking she was going to sing.

I think the problem is that if you listen to the song from the film, the music is really an undertone, and here it's too aggressive. In the film the vocalist can afford to be lighter because the music is lighter, whereas here Kristin is having to blast it out to compete with the orchestra.

It is not uncommon to record a song so the other performers (dancers and orchestra) grow accustomed to Kristin's performance, tempos and interpretation. Plus, then Kristin has a recorded version of the orchestration to work with, as she had short notice to learn the song, blocking and choreography.
