@Tainted369 Have you been to Yonkers lately? They fixed up the whole waterfront area. Nice shops and restaurants. It might take some time but I am sure they will fix up other parts of the city and you will see a mass exodous of all the animals.
I just want to know how this part of the city (South West) became so bad and crime ridden in a matter of 30-35 years.... I heard from family in the 70's and 80's it was alright but went completely downhill towards the beginning of the 90's
Very nice job with these photo. In the Duke collection there was one photo you didn't include in this video that looked familiar to me. It is the one with the dark stone wall on the right side of the street. I believe this is taken on Riverdale Ave. looking north to the corner of Main St. One block beyond is Manor House Square.
On the left side is a substantial stone building. If you look at a street level Google map you will see that this is still there and is a telephone company building.
if you live in yonkers newyork and you are interested in joining my band please messege me you need to be committed and you have to have your own drum set we could pick you up for band practice and drop you off back home currently need a drummer
I so appreciated your tape. The photos are great, but your commentary was invaluable. So few people have the information you do. I was really interested in learning that the Getty Square building was Radford Hall and existed during the Civil War. That was evocative. My mother lived her lifetime in Yonkers, and my brother and I grew up there, so the photos and history mean a lot.
i was born in yonkers, i lived there for 5 years than moved to dominican republic now im back to new york city and yonkers brings me sooo much memories...well not this type of memories..it was more like around 1996
Just like emmygg11, this really brought back memories. My mother grw up on Ashburton, an aunt lived on Vineyard and I grew up on Ridge Ave.
Getty Square was our shopping and entertainment center. I hear that they want to tear down most of this for a baseball stadium. They say there is nothing of historical consequence. How sad. I have quite a few postcards of this area from about the same time frame.
WOW, what a trip down memory lane. My entire family grew up in Yonkers (Ashburton, Vineyard, Schlobohm etc). I am very intimate with ALL the photos. The Gold Dust ad is on 226 Ashburton where family lived. It's so sad that it is now ghetto square. What a great place to grow up in the 50's. Thanks so much!!!
I am creating a video biography for a 104-year-old former resident of Yongers. She is in Hospice -- I'm donating this biography to her and to her family. I'd like to find the 1920s photos atmanman uses in his video. How might I do that?
I remember grants department store the best hot dogs with that special merrit farms with the two brothers with there newspaper stand outside the store they would bring the paper to your car so that you did'nt have to get out , fanny farmers alberts hoesery, chick island, the guy in the wheel chair that we were told not talk to he would be next to merrit farms, donut den pizza ,woolworths,md and sons furiture wow i'm a little home sick
So here's my question...the hot dogs at Grants, on a toasted top-split bun, or toasted white bread? I remember her bun, but an old timer says bread...awesome memory!
sorry for the lateness man i saw your comment on my booley/ghetto video "fight in getty square" but is was funny when my friend got bitt up by his sis in law but your video man amazing nothing of what is today
There's enough detail to fuel thousands of speculations. There's a heavyish man in the first photo, the one looking at the S. B'way/Main Street corner. Is he the same heavyish man who walks in front of the pet shop in the Riverdale Avenue photo? Good work, atmanman -- it seems like magic, bringing the past back to life.
Absolutely incredible - I remember Pete Miele's and the place that sold the barbecue chickens on the corner of Broadway - great knishes! I do remember riding the trolley cars and throwing pennies in front of the steam rollers on the day they paved over the tracks. It's amazing how much had stayed the same in the 50s. Hardly recognize any of it now when I go back there. Thanks so much - stirred up some wonderful memories.
Yes, there was - we'd go fishing/crabbing on the City Pier, at Greystone (?), and take the ferry to Alpine. I also remember a TV repair shop where my Dad would buy tubes to fix our TV (back when people actually did that!). We'd take the #8 Mt. St. Vincent bus home - get it in front of Mimi's or else the side entrance of the Telephone Company on Riverdale Ave. (that is, after the trolley cars stopped running).
You are amazing..putting that together is just super to go down memory lane with you wow.....I have to tell you that I dated Pete Miele's grandson..on and off for the last 6 years ...I did not know them when I lived in Yonkers but I did get a easter rabbit from his store.I had it in the apartment until he almost drowned in the totlet.. My Grandfather had the taxi businnes in Getty Square in the ,,, . His name was Charlie Wieland..Thanks for the memories..
"Hi Ed My wife and I just watched your video you did a terrific job congratulations . We watched it several times and went down memory lane together Being a carpenter I worked on several projects in Yonkers . We fell in love and We're married in saint Mary's church on Broadway I lived on the other side of town on Sterling avenue Really enjoy it the video thank you Ron
Thank you for sharing your history Ron! 56 years? CONGRATS!!!!!! Was the sugar house Dominos? I have lived in Yonkers for 37 years..Its amazing how much Yonkers has changed just in my lifetime. I grew up on Bronx River Road. .I just move to Boca Raton, Fl.

You have a good memory! I could not
think of it. Looks like I am not the only
one who remembers Pere Miele's.
Wasn't there a Fishing Tackle/Bait
store right across the street?
Where did you go fishing/crabbing,
not the City Pier, I hope.

Thanks for the Replies. The cool kids went crabbing at the Triangle near the Jail,
avoiding the Yonkers' wino and degenerates. I will do my next Video on the
old Yonkers' Ferry and the Dayliner which we saw pass every day, as we hung
on the River on the Sugar House/PhelpDodge property. My father made me
go out in the snow to buy a tube at the TV repair shop just south of Prospect
on Riverdale.

That is about the time we left Yonkers
for good. Jax, then grad school at UF,
then UNC-Wilmington for 7 years,
and I just retired from Villanova after
24 years. I meet my wife at Tibbets..
