This was the intro for its first two years. The "Ready to Party" opening replaced it in the third season. When the show went into reruns a few years later, all the 1988 and 1989 episodes had the original opening replaced with the new one. (Same goes for the credits too.) That's probably why you've never seen this before.

That new garfield cartoon tries so hard to be like this one. A for effort but unfortunately this show was just too perfect.

Seriously though the new one is not that bad and I know how we feel about animation these days but garfield was never about appearances. It was about G rated snarky humor and slapsticks with childish puns and gags. That new show covers that it just doesn't have the prime writing that went into this. Only flaw.

Actually, the new show is written by the same guy. I think the real problem is that the CG animation style makes Garfield's world too literal. The old show, like the comic, relied on the visuals being very droll and dry and understated. That was a huge part of the humor. CG by its nature fleshes everything out and frees up the camera. Which is fine for most shows, but I think it works against Garfield's kind of humor. Sometimes it's not just what you say, it's how you say it.

Jim Davis himself handpicked Lorenzo Music to be the voice of Garfield. Since then, every single voice actor for Garfield has been required to impersonate Music. Music officially retired from cartoon voice acting after both Garfield and Friends and Darkwing Duck went off the air.

Lorenzo Music died on August 4, 2001 at the age of 64 from complications with bone and lung cancer, but returned to voice Garfield one last time a month before his untimely death.

Good-bye, Lorenzo. We miss you.

@memoir02 hmm people actually liked the 3d version thats why you dont have much thumbs up. i liked it. not better than the original but it brought up more of the awkward situations that garfield usually gets into making the show interesting so much. the aliens, the crazy fake spies, crazy dogs, mutants, werewolfs, ancient felines,

and most of these things are bent on garfields destruction which makes me like it and laugh even at the corny jokes they put on it made me love it more!

I'm one of those who actually prefered the "Acres" farm segment over the Garfield one. I especially loved the duck character wearing the life-vest that has a small duck head on it which seemed to mimic the wearer's head movements and expressions.
