he was an acrobat's daughter. She swung by her teeth from a noose. But one matinee her bridgework gave way. And she flew through the air like a goose ...
@Stussmeister - As others have posted, it's "42nd Street" from the movie and play of the same name. Carl Stalling often used it in urban settings, and this is one of the best examples of his use of the song. Nothing like the roar of the brassy Warner orchestra, especially with Stalling at the baton!
can somone help finding a warner bros cartoon??its like a horror where gangsters tries to capture i dnt rmmber wether its daffy or bugs but all i can rmmber its dark n scary n a scene frm it is the gangsters fall one by one, please someone?i wnna bring back my childhood times.
I think this might be the first Daffy Duck cartoon I ever saw.
Am I the only one who misses this old, weird, wacky, DAFFY Daffy? Since he got all bitter and cynical, he's lost what made him funny in the first place.
@dhpmathmusic You're obviously referring to "The Great Piggy Bank Robbery". My favorite part of that cartoon is the last scene, when Daffy, after waking up from his dream in which he's Duck Twacy, finds himself kissing a female pig. The pig asks him, "Shall we dance?" and kisses him back! Daffy instantly runs away and the pig laughs and ends the cartoon with the line, "I LOVE THAT DUCK!" :-)
@05tonytin Got that right. Although Daffy is featured in some of Chuck Jones' most critically acclaimed works, he's always portrayed in an ill light. How do you turn a crazy wisecracking duck into a jealous, incompetent a-hole? Smh. His name is Daffy dammit; he's meant to BE that. I think Robert McKimson did his character the most justice...
The other 12 shorts to use this ending were, in order of original theatrical release: Country Mouse (7/13/35), Little Dutch Plate (10/19/35), A Feud There Was (9/24/38), A Day at the Zoo (3/11/39), The Early Worm Gets the Bird (1/13/40), Mighty Hunters (1/27/40), Sniffles Takes a Trip (5/11/40), Wacky Wildlife (11/9/40), The Fighting 69-1/2th (1/18/41), Ain't That Ducky (5/19/45), A Tale of Two Mice (6/30/45) and The Bashful Buzzard (9/15/45).
A big thanks for posting this! Has to be my favorite Daffy cartoon. So many classic moments -- "very sporting of the little black duck", the moustache he paints in the air and Porky runs into, and of course the acrobats daughter song, which I find myself humming still today for no apparent reason. Great stuff to which we have no equal today!!!
@Joemamma69000 I see mostly only crazy Daffy in this pic (even if he's slightly more witty and 'sane' compared to Tex Avery's original version).
It was arguably more Jones that started the jerk Daffy, Freleng worsened it, if anything McKimson seemed to be slowing the process down as long as he could during the 50s (or at least making him crazy AND greedy eg. Don't Axe Me, Dime To Retire), though granted when he finally reverted to the later Daffy he took it to extremes (eg. Well Worn Daffy).
LOL. "She was an acrobat's daughter, she hung by her teeth from a nuse, but at one matinee, her bridgework gave way, and she flew through the air like a goose.", LOL!
@bembu17 They're meant to resemble Jerry Colonna. He was a comedic actor at the time. Among the things he was famous for was the saying, "Ahhh, there's good news tonight!" He was also famous for a song called "Who's Yehudi?" It's on here somewhere.
"Judge, I beseech you. Have mercy! Consider my tender years! Don't send me up the river! Don't send me to Sing Sing... Sing... Sing! Be magnanimous! You might be a fiend yourself someday. Whaddya say, Your Excellency?"
@avada0 I have slight preference for the crazy version, though I like a mix of both to an extent. The mid/late 40s were Daffy's high point for me, where he was still a screwball but had developed some sort of sanity and ambition to make him sympathetic. McKimson (who directed this short) actually kept up this version of Daffy for much longer than Jones and Freleng during the 50s.
It's criminal this short hasn't saw a DVD release yet.
"Daffy Doodles", 1946 starring "Classic" Daffy, and co-starring Porky, in an uncommon role as the Antagonist. It was the directorial debut of Bob McKimson for the Loony Toons/Merrie Melodies series.
7:00 - Instead of Jerry Colonna it's Jury Colonnas! XD
This is one of the most funny Porky/Daffy cartoons, but of course you can't beat the classics like "Robin Hood Daffy". That whole '"Actually, it's a buck-and-a-quarter quarterstaff, but I'm not telling him that" and then Porky dunking Robin Daffy into the river with a twig' scene is priceless!
Originally released in April 1946, this is the first cartoon that Bob McKimson directed.
The titles at the opening are a Turner re-edit, comprising the 1956 A.A.P. tag, the 1948-49 Blue Ribbon titles (with the 1939 version of the Merrie Melodies theme, "Merrily We Roll Along"), cutting to the 1953 Blue Ribbon version of the cartoon's title.
The end is the 1953 Blue Ribbon ending with "THE END" where "That's All, Folks!" would normally be.
The 1948-49 Blue Ribbon opening title tacked on by Turner was taken from the 1952 reissue print of "Inki and the Lion" (July 19, 1941) as I see a production number of #1183.
