I distinctly remember that the "working" track (stock music used as a placeholder) for one scene involving the thief (deleted from the hacked-up version) was the Pink Panther theme.

Richard Williams team of animators did the intros of two Pink Panther films. Since one of the animaters, Ken Harris, was also working on Richard's Thief & the Cobbler (he himself designed the Thief), he made this for laughs.
