, recorded with a pencil sharpener, that's a good one. The truth is Emily was a virtuoso who could have risen to the top of the heap . Larry Coryell once told me, if she would have lived she could have been one of the greatest ever, and he ment it. John Ambercrombie is total gentleman and maestro as well. Emily made a bad decison in Sidney a few years after this video was made, and it cost her her life. Her music lives...
Why is everyone giving Abercrombie so much props? Emily is the fucking virtuoso and it's her song. She should be more appreciated. Emily has some of the most consistently amazing solos of any musician I've heard. Also her comping is badass.

I personally find it interesting to see Abercrombie playing over a bossa-style track. Freely admitting that I know his material a lot better than Remler's, I think it's a well-performed song with nice, structured improvisation - especially showcasing the use of some tasteful diatonic devices.
@tubeiroe :oh, come on man.. that is not really true! Abercrombie does just fine
here-he is no slouch, and anyway, it's just silly to compare them & say one
"destroys" the other..I mean- what is the Point? dig how they have all pretty much got that chorus-ey, Roland JC-120 sound that was all the rage back in the 80's!!
This song is a Brazilian bossa/samba style and she is good at this style and, of course, jazz. Bossa nova uses the same type of jazz chord melody as jazz. I am from Brazil and LOVE both jazz and bossa. The beginning of the song goes like this "Sadness does not have end, happiness does.." (Tristeza nao tem fim, felicidade sim...).
She is the unsung first lady of Jazz guitar and kicks ass on most men who think they can play Jazz, including myself, damnitt I hate it when I'm right!
emily is so bad ass. I have a 330 and man that guitar is frickin laborious to play and shes rippin on it. Its a shame heroin got to her. i wonder what she would sound like today.
It's definitely an ES-330 - the neck joins the body at about the 16th fret on the 330. If you look on the the Firefly cover you'll see holes where the P90 screws were located. She obviously upgraded to humbuckers.
Wow. I'm speechless. Mr. Abercrombie's solo here is beyond compare. And Ms. Remler, well, her date of death is the same as my mom's date of birth. I dunno what that means.
Good lord! Absolute perfection! Abercrombie & Emily Remler..what a combination. Emily was beyond belief! An explosive player who would've nailed every heavy metal shredder to the ground.
Wow, I was at this gig, at the Berklee Performance Centre; a plethora of guitarists as I remember! I seem to remember Pat Metheney and Mick Goodrick were also on.
Jazzster, do you have any more from this gig? Or anything else from the same era at Berklee?
Great stuff! I've always ben an Emily Remler fan. I have the album this track is from called Transitions from 1984. It was a shock what happened in 1990. Amazingly I still miss her after all these years.
I'm also a fan of Scofield and Abercrombie, I've seen both guys many times.
Thanks for putting this video out there, thanks a lot.
I love Jazz Guitar and this woman was simply wonderful beyond words. I rate her as the very tops. Glad to have some of her talent on CD!! Could do with more.
Abercrombie is closer to the Wes sound here and comes across even though Emilly's lines are more complex. Wish she had cut down on the electronic processing, probably Schofield's influence.
That's an early Jobim tune, recorded many times, and still holds up well.
I agree that I could do without the guitar effects, but it doesn't take away from how strong and lovely her playing is. I still can't believe she's gone and it's almost 20 years now. Thanks for posting this.
thanks for this video I unfortunatly didn't get hip to Emily until it was too late. I have learned much from listening to her music as well as Wes. The more I play, the more I play.

I never heard of Emily before this morning while surfing U-Tube. This is very good. Definite Wes influence. Such loss. Abercrombie is fantastic also.
More to listen to besides Martino, Benson, Larry Coryell, Montgomery and Barney Kessell.
Looks like she plays a Gibson 335? Doesn't have P90's like a 330

Def a 335...she is smokin'. Agreed....terrible loss, gone way too soon. She's my only female jazz guitar hero.

Just checked out her site, and I was wrong...it IS a 330 that she modified with humbuckers. : )

Right on man.
Can you imagine seeing Emily and Metheny together? That would have been something.

Thanks for sharing such great music. Remler was a wonderful musician. I've seen Abercrombie two weeks ago with Jerry Bergonzi and Adam Nussbaum.
The music was modern Jazz at its best.
