But I do think that the attitude needs to be "we are doing this to protect nature," which it often isn't when people go out and shoot animals. Some Native Americans were incredibly reverent towards the animals they killed; they acknowledged that they relied on these animals for survival. ADF&G statistic - In areas where aerial hunting takes place predators kill more than 80% of moose/caribou that die. Folks in those areas depend on the meat to survive. Ever been to an interior village and priced a lb of hamburger...$8-10...so's a gallon of milk or peanut butter. Alaskan's WILL continue to use predator control to increase prey numbers in areas that require it. If you want to have a say in how we run things then move here. It's unusually cold again this year...so dress warm.
What about the 1200-1400 wolves that are TRAPPED in Alaska every year. Wheres your sympathy for those wolves? Ten times as many wolves are taken every year by trapping as were killed in this aerial wolf hunt Ashley describes. Doesnt it make sense to try and stop the death of many as opposed to that of a few? @TheFreecoyote: Palin isn't being blamed because she's a governor, and just because she's no longer governor doesn't mean she doesn't have the power to influence people. She's hosting her own show on the Discovery Channel about the pristine Alaskan wilderness, yet she was in the lead of a great campaign AGAINST nature. If wolves are at all competing with humans for prey, then there needs to be some alternative. Look into Shaun Ellis and his methods of protecting livestock from wolf attacks.

Its about controlling an over populated predator from having negative effects on all the other wild life. There are other animals that live there too. Sometimes nature gets out of balance, if we can manage it then that is the responsible thing to do. If you don't like when things die then why do you like wolves.

But I do think that the attitude needs to be "we are doing this to protect nature," which it often isn't when people go out and shoot animals. Some Native Americans were incredibly reverent towards the animals they killed; they acknowledged that they relied on these animals for survival. Instead of something respectful and dutiful, Palin made hunting wolves a blood bath. "Bring me their foreleg for money."

ADF&G statistic - In areas where aerial hunting takes place predators kill more than 80% of moose/caribou that die. Folks in those areas depend on the meat to survive. Ever been to an interior village and priced a lb of hamburger...$8-10...so's a gallon of milk or peanut butter. Alaskan's WILL continue to use predator control to increase prey numbers in areas that require it. If you want to have a say in how we run things then move here. It's unusually cold again this year...so dress warm.

What about the 1200-1400 wolves that are TRAPPED in Alaska every year. Wheres your sympathy for those wolves? Ten times as many wolves are taken every year by trapping as were killed in this aerial wolf hunt Ashley describes. Doesnt it make sense to try and stop the death of many as opposed to that of a few? AK Dep of Fish and Game have done a remarkable job over of years managing our wildlife. And oh yeah...Palin's strategy worked. Biologists in the states Fish and Game Department estimate that the caribou herds increased to 6500 this year, thanks to the reduced threat from wolves. The birth rate went from one calf per 100 cows to 39 calves per 100 cows, which will help herd growth for the next several years. Another season without the aerial hunt might have wiped out the caribou herds altogether. Ashley doesn't mention that. It's a left wing attack ad in disguise.

Yeah, but the food chain would be unbalanced if this keeps going on. If there were no wolves, then caribou would keep building up. Then, they might go after crops. There would be no natural predator to keep this in balance.

Now, she wants you to think she has some sort of moral high ground by criticizing the reduction of a predator that, unchecked, could eliminate caribou as a species. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) wolves are on the "Least Concerned" category of endangerment, meaning they are overpopulated. You can't get any category less endangered than this. Traveling in packs, wolves kill Moose and Caribou which, Alaskans have been relying upon for food forever. So it's all perfectly logical. So why do Defenders of Wildlife persist with this foolishness? By demonizing Palin to uninformed feelers they hope to raise their fund$.

God (or nature, if you're an atheist) set up a perfectly good way of controlling the populations of all animals. The only reason the caribous are being protected from wolves is to give men something to hunt. Let natural selection run its course. Nothing man has ever tried to improve upon in nature has worked. Kill all the wolves, and in a few years you'll be killing off the over-populated herds of caribou. Kill, kill, kill--seems that's all repubs and conservatives know how to do.

By the way, Palins strategy worked. Biologists in the states Fish and Game Department estimate that the caribou herds increased to 6500 this year, thanks to the reduced threat from wolves. The birth rate went from one calf per 100 cows to 39 calves per 100 cows, which will help herd growth for the next several years. Another season without the aerial hunt might have wiped out the caribou herds altogether. Ashley doesn't mention that. It's a left wing nutjob attack ad in disguise.
