Sean Penn was supposed to be in Hoffman's roles. think of it. Sean Penn and Philip Seymour Hoffman in one film. headlined by an almost Tour De Force by Adam Sandler. how much better could the film have been.
for me, Watson as Bess is one of the greatest performances i've ever felt. and i do mean 'felt.' it's so powerful it affects your body. i'd put Watson's performance in Breaking The Waves up there with Keitel in Bad Lietenant, Day Lewis in There Will be Blood, and Keaton in Annie Hall. she's that good. but putting a word on it like 'good' or 'great' feels wierd to me like it undercuts it's power somehow by naming it. it was too intense for some; walkouts. still: Bess is... good. (inside joke)
@thedwork Very well said buddy. I agree with you completely, Emily Watson in Breaking The Waves was one of those performances that will go down in history as a great all time, especially in the bravery of the performance. Emily Watson is an extremely fearless actress, not afraid to go far lengths in order to bring the best performance. I like the way that you compared it to Bad Lieutenant as well, in that these are roles that most actors would cringe and fear doing, but once pulled off, great.
when actors as great as these two are can speak so highly of a director's method, only his fourth film in, you know that's a sign of a master in the making...if not already made
Punch Drunk Love is PTA's only stinker so far. Ah well, not to worry; even Hitchcock had off days.

If you look close(or perhaps, stand way back), there is a strong popeye theme to this movie.

Good to see Phil comb his hair, shave and get all dressed up for the interview. Seriously, though, I love the guy to pieces.

Man, Phil Hoffman looks seriously cute here. Just adorable...though, that's hardly uncharacteristic of him, in my opinion.
