my moms ford ran for a year with out oil found out when i took a look at it i was like wtf and there was no leaks dont take your car to a ford dealership to have it serviced planning to put new pistons in anyway
damn, when i ran out of oil i just spun a bearing. block was still good. needed a new crank and 2 new connecting rods though. ended up just getting a completely different motor
@TheSunnybuckeye - Yes, the block was destroyed when the cap came off. We used a used block that we had a history of for the rebuild. Still works great. Thanks for stopping by.
@desmodronic916 This is ig0tp00pies (but this is my new youtube account with all of my mechanics videos)
I think it's a very smart Idea to "sim test" the engine before starting it, this allows for oil to be flushed through the entire system at Cranking RPMs that are around 350-500. This is an excellent way to start seating the rings & preloading the bearings. Also...when talking about turbo applications, this is a very smart way of priming the oil pump assembly to the turbo & other routes.
@halohadel Bro I've been rebuilding subaru motors for years now. Specializing in EJ205, 257, and EJ22. You ALWAYS keep the engine at a steady 2,000RPM when breaking in the new engine WHEN NEW FLAT TAPPET CAMS ARE BEING USED.
If the cams are "seasoned" then this is not gonna be an issue.
Realize that your oil pressure picks up with every greater amount of Revolutions Per Minute.
So please bro...let the people who know what they're talking about discuss this.
@halohadel Also.. "beating the snot out of it" isn't a necessary step if you have the correct Roughness Average reading of between 18-26 with a molly ring. The break in period shouldn't be to rough off the bat with anything that is a forged piece because the parts need to season themselves before being put through thermal expansion beyond normal driving.
As far as I've seen (after tearing apart engines)
the best manner is 2000rpm for 20 minutes. oil change, then vary rpm to max within 100miles
@halohadel dude "modern engines" don't use a generic RA. The RA depends on the metallergy within the cylinder block & the type of rings/ compression being applied.
Do you know how to build engines at all bro?
Also, they are flat tappet cam engines considering the fact that they aren't roller cam engines.
I can take pictures of the tappets in my ej205 if you want.
I understand he never replaced the camshaft, but a true engine builder would have atleast replaced cam bearings. I'm assuming he also did not do this.
Regardless, you MUST keep the engine at 2,000-2,500 for 20 minutes. This insures oil pressure is above the necessary standard for break-in wear & proper procedure.
I really hate it when people don't know what they're talking about
I do however applaud people posting there version of HOW TO videos. It is true that the art of the break in is a "too each his own" kind of deal. Hows the engine been running for you guys? how many miles are on it?
Good oil pressure and compression with used pistons?

@RA9ODE Cheaper than a junkyard motor that you don't know much about. While I've done before with other engines, you don't normally have the same with the EJ25.
Hey how did u clean the block? did u dump it into an acid bath, degreaser bath or carby cleaner bath. OR did u just use a cloth and alot of elbow grease? then after did u lube it all back up or just leave it?
@UmakeMeSYK I agree, I think he had to have done an acid bath or something. I just rebuilt an EJ22 (very similar motor, just a smaller bore) and I could not get that burnt-on oil off for the life of me.

how did you do the timeing on the crank shaft cuz my engine has the same problem like yours did can u make a viideo explaining how to time the crank shaft with the pistons
hey man, nice rebuild move, diy engine is the only way to go, that way you know its all sweet, i posted my rebuild video if you want to check it out, its both exciting and horific the first time you turn the key. thanks for posting !
This vid reminds me of my dad. I remember he would buy a cheap car and ask the guy whats wrong with it. The guy would says "engines blown" and my dad would say. "Is that all?" Like it was no big deal. He's get that car up and running in no time and then make a profit on the side.
Same, I built my own computer and I'm rebuilding my sport bike, valves, carburators, simple things, but its better than paying 600 dollars at the shop for labor itself!!!! Seriously, that was my quote. Its just labor. Thats all.
In a perfect world, yes it would probably be a better idea to use new pistons, however, only 1 piston was bad and the rest cleaned up great (just carbon on them) so we felt confident using brand new factory OEM rings with the new and 'used' pistons. Runs great even still
@RM250D8rzr What's wrong with mixing new and old pistons? Just make sure they are the same weight and compression height. The engine will never know the difference.
@whatnamesnottakenyet. well yes its okay to have a new piston with old pistons if the the older pistons have new rings. and the rod bearing is new. its not a huge deal but im just fussy about that stuff
i got a subaru legacy knocking. ready to rebuild it not so much lol I looked at that motor and said no way. dsm 4g63t ftw of course thats whats in my evo lol
In retrospect, I probably should have. Even though it was a bit short-sighted, cost was a concern at the time. That said, the car still runs great and we're happy with it. Glad you enjoyed the video,
wow! this is amazing. nothing special about the engine rebuild, but installing the engine without an engine hoist wow. I am impressed!

@ig0tp00pies he didn't even really break it in.
you NEVER rev it to build oil pressure.
What I do is take the plugs out and spin it over until the pump is primed, then idle the engine until up to operating temp.
Then rev the snot out of it! 5 or 6k and you will seal up the rings really good. Differ the load and always keep the rpms moving around.
I once had a local build tear down my engine for an unrelated problem, and he was surprised by how clean the pistons looked.

This vid reminds me of my dad. I remember he would buy a cheap car and ask the guy whats wrong with it. The guy would says "engines blown" and my dad would say. "Is that all?" Like it was no big deal. He's get that car up and running in no time and then make a profit on the side.

great vid. I love how there is no engine lift needed. I hope it runs great for you!

Great job! Why pay someone to do somthing for you when you know how to do it yourself! But in your case help from friends to does not hurt!
Like me i'd rather build computers myself then buy one or have it built for me.
Gungrave20 2 years ago 2
Same, I built my own computer and I'm rebuilding my sport bike, valves, carburators, simple things, but its better than paying 600 dollars at the shop for labor itself!!!! Seriously, that was my quote. Its just labor. Thats all.

You two looked so burly just lifting up the motor like that. Forget the engine crane! Let's use our biceps!

its not a good idea to mix new and old pistons btw lol
RM250D8rzr 2 years ago
if they're all OEM and have the same rings it's not a big deal
slayingthedream 2 years ago 2
yeah true.
RM250D8rzr 2 years ago
In a perfect world, yes it would probably be a better idea to use new pistons, however, only 1 piston was bad and the rest cleaned up great (just carbon on them) so we felt confident using brand new factory OEM rings with the new and 'used' pistons. Runs great even still

qmopar 2 years ago
yeah true. lol. as long as they were in good condition.
RM250D8rzr 2 years ago
@RM250D8rzr What's wrong with mixing new and old pistons? Just make sure they are the same weight and compression height. The engine will never know the difference.
whatnamesnottakenyet 1 year ago
@whatnamesnottakenyet. well yes its okay to have a new piston with old pistons if the the older pistons have new rings. and the rod bearing is new. its not a huge deal but im just fussy about that stuff

Yeah i was thinking of what a turboed stripped legacy could do.

i would of used all 4 new Pistons.

Saved the Subaru !
10/10 ! if i could.
SubaruJawn 2 years ago
In retrospect, I probably should have. Even though it was a bit short-sighted, cost was a concern at the time. That said, the car still runs great and we're happy with it. Glad you enjoyed the video,
