Mozart composed this Concerto for Flute and Harp K.299 when he was 22...Legend really said that Wolfgang didn't like very much both instruments...but all the works written by the Salzburg genius are simply...divine !
btw:, recordholings, perhaps you know: the picture you are using is very racy. well, it *was* very racy. indeed, considered smut in its time. it's amusing and worth reading up on. :-)
The flute wasn't really the way we see it until Boehm created the transverse flute, which made it much easier to keep in tune and to enjoy - Mozart didn't like the flute as it was in his day because of all the flaws. He wrote this piece, I read, for a flute player who he didn't consider very good actually. I thought that was funny.
@ulimaino I'm not sure if I understand your response. Classical music also involved use of new intervals, styles, forms and techniques (compared to the Baroque age). I'm not sure what merit has to do with anything. There are probably many musicians who can compose without aid of an instrument. Beethoven's deafness is emphasized probably to add to his romantic qualities, not because it is an impossible feat.
@ulimaino two different people who would have had a different reaction to deafness, it is pointless to ask a question like that, but he would have been able to compose
where did you read that? in his letters there's nothing like that. the only one who spoke about his childish hate for the trumpet was leopold. i'm interested!
Well I heard this music while listening to the local culture radio and the host said it. He said Mozart got an order to compose a concertino for flute and harp and though these were instruments he didn't like the music was, as usual, wonderful.
He started not liking the flute after he composed this same concerto. Apparently, some rich hobby-flutist [and his very talented harpist daughter (Mozart's student)] commissioned this concerto. Mozart worked long and hard on the piece, and in the end it was accepted by the rich guy. However, the rich commissioner did not pay Mozart, and his bad attitude stated from there. Apparently most of the flutists that he met afterwards were rich and extremely arrogant [could not play in tune, etc.].
Flutes were not made with all the brilliant sound that they have today. Mozart also felt that when composing for flute he was restricted in what he wrote to ensure the instrument sounded well.
It is called "The Swing" and it was painted by Jean-Honore FRAGONARD.... a masterpiece, indeed. Too bad you don't see its beauty here. Try searching it on google.
@LunaticFireflies
The painting is called "The Swing" (French: "Les hasards heureux de l'escarpolette") and was painted in 1767 by Jean-Honoré Fragonard.

I bet Mozart would have loved Saxophone!! You can practically hear that he wanted his flute soloist on that gorgeous uninvented instrument!!!!!

@hotwaiter Böhm did not invent the flauto traverso; he 'improved' it to meet certain requirements (at the expense of timbre).

Mozafunkula 2 years ago 3
@Mozafunkula yes and no... I don't believe a Wolfgang deaf being able to compose as Beethoven did.....
ulimaino 2 years ago
@ulimaino Why not? Mozart had the perfect pitch and photographic musical memory. You think he had to finger tunes on the keyboard while he composed?
saltyseaweed 1 year ago
@saltyseaweed I say this because Beethoven have an advantage. The romantic period involves the use of new intervals, styles, forms, techniques....
therefore a Beethoven deaf is more meritorius than a Mozart one.....

Of course one of the lovliest pieces ever written and Fragonard or Watteau painting is wonderful too.
Mozart complained that the trumpet was too loud for him. Badly played, any instrument is too loud.
mrmolinodelahoz 2 years ago
Yeah...a trumpet tho....if it hits a bad note, it brings the whole orchestra down
seismiccowboy 2 years ago
It's really good but I believe it's a little too fast. I'm a harpist myself and I can't imagine playing this piece that fast. I'm learning it now.
