  • I like your performance of this lovely music. You must have some musical experience outside of plucked string solo music LOL!

  • Do you have it strung as "courses", or are those single strings?

  • Absolutely stunning!

  • Very good.............. that's a really good player of luth.... i really don't understand why 8 persons don't like.... i would love to see how they play that piece of kapsberger...

  • Really nice playing.

  • nice

  • Fantastic performance and wonderful tone!

  • I studied lute and I wished I had heard anybody play that well in Europe...

    Bowing my head

    danyel

  • Marvelous

  • This asian gentleman simply reflects the ancient, musical maturity of China. I enjoyed his seamless tact for the European lute and its music.

  • Wonderful performance, and from Tienjin! What a surprise.

Just a note: unless he has a particular preference, his name should be romanized as either Ho Ching or He Qing.

  • Hen, hen hao pipa-de yin-yue, tong-xue He Chin! Xie-Xie Ni!

  • The virtuosity of master He Chin is agood example that the middle age was not only the dark age. in today restless time we explore more and more a quiet and self centered middle age which invented art and handwork in such great artistry that million people today can benefit from it. istn`t that wonderful? i wish every human could play an music instrument, that would be a real revolution to the mind, and change the world completely.

  • 你好! 非常好您演奏非常光滑,非常古典感謝您

  • Could you tell more details about the instrument? Instrument maker / model / price / string type and model?

  • very good technique, good and clear sound.. I don't know anything about lute, but I'm a classical guitarist.... his right hand looks a bit funny? Many times his alternation of fingers look weird...he trills with thumb and index... not that it affects his great sound in any way, but for me, alternating between thumb and index is much harder than going between index and middle... weird technique he has, but works good for him!

  • that is how a lute was and is played today with thumb- index , because renaissance music need a percussive like effect, the thumb is a strong note and the index is a weak.

alternation Index - middle finger started only at the end of 16th century, so is not correct to play 1400-1600 music with I-M.

He play without nails, this is another different thing from classical guitar.

  • ..excellent musicianship, subtle, a joy to listen to....

  • bravo!!!!

  • What kind of lute is that?

    is it an eight course?

  • yes

  • This virtuoso's pokerface belies the considerable amount of "schwung" and elegance he sprinkles over this challenging piece by Kapsberger. Tasteful use of accelerando here and there.

  • An Middle Age European instrument and music, performed by He Chin in China and we all can enjoy it on You Tube for free. What a wonderful world.

  • It's great, but our musical culture and heritage is becoming dominated by orientals - we need to rejuvenate interest in this sort of music (i.e. classical and early music) in Europe.

  • @djsmurfie Orientals???Seriously???

  • I agree. Everyone is playing European music, but no one is giving recognition to Europeans (mostly Germans) for creating it.

People need to recognize that the composer deserves the most credit, and then the performer after him.

  • @789vbc : and the instrument was brought originally from the court of Baghdad to Europe, which makes it even more astonishing! :)

  • @maan7633 The Oud was, not the Lute.

  • @djsmurfie

    originally dj smurf, originally.

  • @789vbc there should be more people like you gracing youtube with their presence instead of the whining children you usually see.

  • So grateful to Youtube for making it possible to just stumble across the stuff. I'd never heard of Kapsberger until I searched for theorbo....About the nails - I think there were actually two parallel schools of thought/style. Some played with, so This guy is great.

  • I think he's using no nails because the sound is soft.

Juliam Bream used nails and guitar technique so is like not playing lute .....is a different sound with that position of the hand, I play both lute and guitar, so I have nails enough to play guitar but short nail to play lute with the true hand position.

  • Lute is awesome!

  • shiyt thats what im talkin bout! Toccata on a lute!!!

  • That's a nice-sounding lute.

  • Wow... that just melted my face off! Amazing.

  • Perfect *and* full of feeling, that's really wonderful!

  • can sb give me a definition of what a lute exactly is...i find thousands of different instruments named lute..

btw the video's music is beautiful

  • it's what he's playing there. It's a kind of instrument that was around in the dark ages.

  • thanks,..well, but i read that also a guitar is a kind of lute, and there are douzens of others i havent even heard of

  • generally a lute comes in multiple kinds, for instance a 10 chorus lute means it has 10 sets of strings.

There is also a lute harp, but I can't think of any other kinds in particular.

A guiter is similar to a degree. They both get their sound from the shape, wood and strings (accoustic guitars anyhow) but that's pretty much it :).

  • Actually, the Lute was NOT played during the Dark Ages. It was an instrument that came into use during the Middle Ages..... The Dark Ages in Europe occured after the fall of the Roman Empire and ended in around the elevnth century..... Contrary to popular belief, they were not 'dark ages' anyway.... they were just less 'enlightened' times

  • I know, I meant to say more renaissance times, no idea why I put dark ages ^^

  • I used to make the same mistake all the time lol..... That chap does play beautifully don't you think?

    S

  • He does indeed :). He and Luthval have made me want to actually buy a lute. Unfortunately, they are so expensive...

  • @Stevie1422 The dark ages is a highly euro-centric term only taking the state of Europe into consideration. However despite the fall of Rome in the west many civilisations continued to flourish in the East during this period, hardly a dark or less 'enlightened' period.

  • @lebleualto Most of history is Eurocentric - why? Because from 1500 the history of the world is the story of European ascendancy.

  • @djsmurfie The dark ages are not "from 1500".

  • nice!!!!!

  • He is good...

    get it? :)

  • Holy hell, extremely impressive playing!

  • that is some really beautiful woodwork in the centre of your lute

  • Wonderful! What a splendid musician!

  • Very impressive and quite virtuosic indeed.

  • beautiful... thanks a lot

  • That would be the shit though!!!

  • wow, I didn't know He Qing plays Lute at all! Apparently, he is awsome!!! I took his class" Westen music history" 8, 9 years ago in Tian Jin Cinservatory in China. I had no idea this teacher could play an instrument, I wish he showed us a little bit...anyways, nice playing, He Lao shi!

  • This is extraordinarily fine playing and, as far as I know, He Chin is completely unknown in the West.

  • Hau jile!

    dt

  • Brilliant!

  • His name is He Qing. He had studied guitar with Chen Zhi in China and studied lute and other early instruments with Hans Michael Koch in Germany. He teaches at Tian Jin Conservatory of Music (China). Kapsberger's Toccatas are the most challenging among the Renaissance lute repertoire. He Qing's interpretation of this piece is outstanding. From what I understand, this video is a home recording taped by his student.

  • Wow, go asian dude go!

  • what's the difference between lute and guitar?

  • They are spelt differently.

  • number of strings

origin (lute came a lot first and it's maybe the origin of the guitar)

  • Outstanding. That is very, very skilled and inspired playing.

  • So great.

  • Wow, this is great playing.

  • Where do you even get lessons for those? self taught?

  • very good, thank you!

  • Very nice work on chord changes. What or those strings made of? Sounds like nylon but I've heard gut is used by some.

  • @philomelodia Gut.

  • Bravo Brilliant a true inspiration please do more videos!

    :-)))))

  • Wonderful is not too strong a word. I am grateful there are musicians like you in this world. I wish there might be more. Thank you so much for this performance.

  • wonderful....

  • Wow! This is fantastic!

  • I agree with the other commentators. The finger work was artistic without losing tempo. Prolonged sustains on lower notes projected nicely in this recording. Was it a studio recording?

  • Wonderful - thank you!

  • lute should be played like this.

  • Chinese could be good at LUTE because they have BeeFa, simillar to Lute.

  • its a pipa 琵琶. can search some of its song in youtube.

  • thanks man... it is PIPA PIPA PIPA^^

  • Great!!!

  • harikasın. çok güzel... teşekkür ederim.

  • perfect control of the fingers and nuances, beautiful performance and SOUND

  • Great Job!

  • Excellent in every regard!

  • Beautiful! ;-)

  • Congrats! A pleasure to listen to & watch this video.

  • very well

  • wonderful playing ... kaspberger is difficult music, your rendition is realy great

  • Really good ! music is beautiful and really well played ! Thanks.

  • Plus, I note that he is using historically correct "thumb-under" technique with the right hand.

  • nothing's dead about that performance. I used to play the Lute and I'm really impressed with his speed and agility. Great classical players speak through their instruments not their facial expressions while playing. Bravo!

  • He plays at a professional level perhaps comparable to Paul O'Dette, currently the best player in the world.

  • Absolutely wonderfull!!!! Wish my lute playing sounded like this!!!!

  • Where can you buy one of these? And where do you get strings? Can you retune a Baroque lute so you can play renaissance music? No one I know has ever seen a lute before! Thanks

  • you can look to societies that specialize in early music. or you can buy a kit and have someone who knows how to build assemble it(i did this). or e-bay, you never know

  • Many years ago (this has to be around 1975), I had a friend who had (I believe) a 7 chorus lute. He loved playing it, but it (and he) didn't really fit into the the rock band I was playing in at the time. He was quite talented, and had very interesting taste in music, and a collection of "interesting" musical instruments... A Travis Beam electric guitar, the lute, and a mellotron!

  • Wonderful! Finally a really good lute player! Thank you!

  • This rocks!

  • I love it, absolutely amazing, but his face is so dead.

  • thats concentration, and at least its better tha him putting a lot of pretend faces on with fake emotion

  • Yeah, but it's still dead.

  • Excellent!

  • Beautiful - he's a fine player!

  • Never thought i would see someone preform this piece.

  • hoaddy kindly advised that this gentleman's name is "He Chin" . The title Toeeata is just a typo, for Toccata. Makes finding in the search engine a little difficult. Anyway, what a brilliant player he is, and the sound is excellent.

  • Wow! Such a beautiful song and especially instrument..
