Loved 'em both. Along with his near-nuclear voice, Corelli was of course a fabulously handsome and sexy man. I'm surprised, however, that more commentators haven't found Crespin as sexy as I have. Fabulous singer, fantastic voice and hotter than boiled tar. It's not always about perfect features and a perfect figure. It's about assurance. Crespin radiated that:) --
As I've commented before on You Tube for Corelli's Trovatore excerpts - "if testosterone had a sound - it would be Franco's voice!!!" GOD - WHAT AN ARTIST - What an instrument - and a tone of voice that simply remains ingrained in your mind, heart and soul!!! RIP Maestro Corelli - A voice like yours only occurs rarely ...Blessed are we who heard you live in the theater!!
Splendide couple et voix merveilleusement assorties! Que n'a t'on enregistré ces deux artistes dans une intégrale de studio de ce superbe Verdi, l'un des plus grands ouvrages de ce maître, à mon modeste goût...
Interesting head movement Ms Crespin makes at 2.54/2.55: Seems to me a "give me a break" movement because of Corelli feeling the urge to sustain his last note longer than hers :)
Quelle splendeur que la voix "italienne " de Crespin! pourquoi a t'elle perdu son temps à chanter en allemand? ce n'était pas son style ni sa culture! que de regrets d'intégrales verdiennes perdues!!!
Haha ... the scenery is classic Bell Telephone Hour camp. (Is that a scaffold in the background???) But the singing is beyond lovely. And obviously Crespin did have those top notes at times! Wow!
haha, i love how at the very end they're both like, "screw acting, here's my high c: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH" lol. lovvvvveeeeee thier performance of this duet though. LOVE it, if only i could see the FIRST half.
Corelli was right not to attempt this role. It is long, difficult, and more suited to a tenor with a lighter, more flexible voice. On the other hand, he would have been great in the two big tenor solos. I believe he recorded the second one.
Just sad that they have both left this wolrd!I saw them together in TOSCA at the Opera de Paris (with also Bacquier!)what an evening! That was really OPERA in all terms!Stangely the voice of Crespin was not suitable on recordings, speccially in the top range! On stage that impression completely disapered,I am sure that today, with new recording technics it could have been better made!:
He was not a great actor either but they both sang well here, at least she did for my money and the negative comments about her could be that she has easily as much power as he did so to boost a singer up some people knock the other one down.
her voice was very large he would never over power her, she looked like she was happy with the duet at the end and he never sang it cause it is a very tough role for the tenor and he had winners in Turandot and Chenier, so why bother he was Corelli!
you cannot classify any voice by fachs forever. many mezzos will sing soprano rep because it feels comfortable and they can actually do it (like grace bumbury and shirley verrett singing lady macbeth) and vice-versa (maria callas and angela gheorghiu singing carmen) and some people make entire careers of singing all different thing going between soprano and mezzo very healthily, most famously: jessye norman. so it's about what feels right, not that you're simply classified as... she sounds good.
He never sang it because, as he said, it wasn't a very popular opera in Italy. It was rarely done. That's what he said anyway. His voice is perfect for the role.
Corelli was an excellent actor, involved but minimalist. You can view him in situations, such as the end of an aria, when lesser performers would go for the corny, hammy gesture, but not Corelli. He was totally convincing as the romantic hero, dramatically, physically, and vocally. I saw him live a number of times.
Well - maybe not much of an actor, but I saw him sing Romeo in Seattle, and when he made his first entrance in black tights the entire audience gasped! In Italy he was nicknamed 'Golden Thighs'!!!
Who the hell cares about Corelli's acting? If you want acting go see a play or a football game. The man was a God. I'll take "park and bark" over meagerly sung fireworks any day. Especially when it is like Corelli who embodied the true essence of opera. It is a VOCAL art.
I agree, I prefer "park and bark" too if the singing is of that caliber. In a perfect world I'd like the better acting technique along with it. But I'm not taking anything away from FC. He is a wonderful singer.
But what do you expect him to do? It is a love duet after all. It would be rather strange if they stayed far from each other. Besides, holding hands gives the possibility for the singer to signal when he/she wants to stop a note as you can see here from Crespin.
I would expect him to loosen up a bit. relax his shoulders. And relax his arm so it doesn't stick out like a tree branch. He sings wonderfully but every love duet I've ever seen him in he used the same tree branch arm.
Can you imagine what a glorious stage picture Corelli, with this silver hair, would have made with Dmitri Hvorotovsky? I have to admit that I haven't listened to Ms. Crespin very much, because her usual repertoire wasn't what I prefer to listen to, but I like her Verdi and also her Berlioz.
Very interesting! It's incredible for me that Corelli never sing Riccardo, and neither the arias. As far as I know this is his only Ballo record. What a pity!
Why nothing else about her international performances wagnerian one and french repertory, and Shumann liederkreis... and so on.... She has been aked to the best Opera Houses stages all over the world during thirty years ... See you soon Madame Crespin!!!
for some reason, the mics works better with her voice pitch than with his(it is heard much more clearly)

FRANCO CORELLI
BRAVISSIMO!!!
The heroic tenor par excellence, came to explore and develop all resources of his Beautiful Voice, the nuances between them diminuendo
almost impossible for the voices of great size.
The Romance and Courage that only he knew how to express.
Single Master of expression!

Fabulous! Crespin, shows why in this video she too had a great career, first as a soprano with a lovely voice, and then as a mezzo.

Just the opposite, Corelli sings relaxed and Mme Crespin is always under strain on top.

In all her recordings when Crespin sings above an Aflat she seems as if she were at the dentist's making a treatment withought anestesy.

Maybe she is really a mezzo soprano singing soprano rep.? I love her in the mezzo rep..
Just a thought..

Love it ,...thanks
Corelli has a great voice but his acting
is always so stiff. He always "holds hands" with the soprano on these duets and it looks so fake....LOL
Hey I'm not knocking it. I know it's hard to sing and look relaxed....
