I think James Newton Howard did an excellent job on his score to "King Kong". I mean I'm sure Howard Shore did too, before his score got rejected, but I think this score by JNH is superb.
James Newton Howard shines becoz he is in lock-step with creativity, ingenuity and flair every time he goes to score for a movie, strikingly similar to John Williams, Ennio Morricone, and Maurice Jarre. His genius to arouse considerable interest among his soundtrack listeners is something so special. His films would have been livelier had there been more of his splendid music. Do you know that JNH felt ' King Kong ' was the toughest to compose a score for fictional giant ape movie remake?
well the hard work paid off mr james newton howard cause the musical score for king kong was awesome and i actually loved the movie and the musical score
@Marcatolegato Hi. Hadn't thought of that. In any case. Great score. Especially Central Park. I loved watching it. FYI, if you're a fan of actor Andy Serkis, he plays the title character of Screwtape in the Radio Theatre production of C.S. Lewis' The Screwtape Letters. (Cd's, but with one dvd behind the scenes stuff. )
I'm a student of composition and, having done some small score projects myself, I can second this. Especially if he's orchestrating it himself. It's great to have a composer who still does as much of that as possible—the orchestration is just as much a part of the music as the themes.
As for deadlines... they have an incredible way of motivating. It's a lot different than the kick you get from inspiration, and not as pleasant, but they work!
2 minutes is quite a lot, try doing it lol. You have to first come up with a musical idea, which can sometimes take days except when you're scoring a film you have tight deadlines so you have to come up with new ideas everyday. Then you have to write it down, or in J.N.H's case play it and record it into a sequencer, Once you have th melody and chords in the sequencer you have to orchestrate and arrange it which is a big job. and then it needs to be tidy'd up for the orchestra to play. :)
Actually thinking about it, J.N.H has a load of other dudes to arrange it and make it ready for orchestra so i dont know why he only manages 2 minute lol maybe he just takes a while to get inspired, everyones different
He is such a film score god!lol. Does anyone know what software he uses? I want to start practicing film scoring but most film score software uses nothing but MAC does anyone know of a software that can be used on windows XP?? I've tried FL Studio but the sounds are way to computer generated.
A shame no one remembered the great Elmer Bernstein. Three words: The Magnificent Seven. Plus a lot more. A shame he passed way mere months after Jerry Goldsmith.
how does he make the Synthesized version of the movie made with his key board into notated music? i really want to know cause i am trying to connect my piano (yamaha mo8) to sibelius but the program does not get it right most of the time.
the mock-up is made with a complex midi system, with sound libraries installed on several computers all connected to a digital audio workstation (DAW) generally equipped with Apple Logic, a sequencer wich can also export notation. With Logic you can work to make a clear score while retaining the feel of your performance. Anyway assistants to the composer work to the score generally in Finale (or Sibelius) to make full orchestral score and parts.

JNH did a great job for PJ's KK. It's one of his very best scores. The monkey is not to blame, cause who can resist a Beauty (Ann Darrow played by Naomi Watts)surrounded by such endearing music? So thanks JNH, for making us believe "it was Beauty killed the Beast".
King Kong's score wasn't bad, but I would have expected something much more spectacular. Even though, when the ape dies, the music almost makes me cry.
He's better than Williams; his scores are more diverse-sounding from each other in a wider variety of movie genres. And Howard's music makes my body break out in goosebumps.
I was at his house some years ago, watching him work on a film score. No, he's not John Williams; he's James Newton Howard, a gifted composer and very nice guy.
I'd have Thomas Newman , Alexandre Desplat , and Bernard Hermman on my list of King composers.

Who cares who's better? Both John Williams and James Newton Howard have created music that will live for years to come.
Jaws is over 30 years old and EVERYBODY knows the shark theme.
JNH has done great music too that sets the pace and tone for all the movies he's done.
The more I hear the score of KK05 the more I'm impressed with his work.
