@TWhite2345 If he flares at you, take it slow... just means he's still not comfortable with your finger being there... at least that's my interpretation. Keep dropping the food pellets nearby while leaving your finger nearby (few inches away at first, then closer with each feeding). He'll eventually love it when he sees the shadow overhead.
Oooh I trained my fish to do this the exact same way about 2 months ago! He is very good at it and luckily never tries to jump out of his huge tank. My betta loooves biting my finger.
@allapologizes121 I had the same problem at first. He is frightened your finger is a predator. The trick I used was to first simply put the pellet of food into the water and let him eat it alone. Over a few weeks, whenever I dropped in the pellet I would make my hand a little closer each time. Eventually, my finger never left the water but he was comfortable enough to approach anyway. I also gave him "finger waves" from the side of his bowl so he would associate finger = food. Good luck!
I just saw your comment; hope your finish managed to eat since then! =)
Recently, I bought a new betta as well who wouldn't eat the food pellets (like those above). Some online sources recommended freeze dried blood worms, available at any pet store. They're not messy (as the name might suggest) and the fish loves them - especially if I use my finger to make them move around in the water. Good luck.
Ok thanks
