I remember seeing this episode when I was about 6 years old. There aren't a lot of TV scenes that I can remember from about 40 years back. That was fucking scary to a six year old. You have to remember TV was different back then, we had no VCR, no cable and four channels of network only. It's not like these days where kids watch "The Exorcist" and laugh the whole way through it making fun of the effects.
I saw this episode (where scene was taken) when I was a kid and it scared the &$*(&# out of me! shoot, I was only like 6 years old ok! Of course when I saw the still clip before clicking on it, I instantly had goose bumps..brought back scary memories, but yes, John Saxon is indeed a great actor and handsome!
The toy that came out was called Maskatron but it was never called that on the show. it was just "the robot". There was too many similarities between "the robot" and the "fembots" from the Bionic Woman.Couldn't they have come up with a more original enemy?
@morval99 It did. I had recourring nightmares of the robots and the fembots until I was in my late 20's. I would wake up screaming almost every night because the faceless robots were chasing me.
Ha, ha, I was scared too...it looked so high tech but now seems laughable, all those solid state things in the face...my brother still has Steve and Maskatron in their original boxes, I wonder how valuable are those nowadays...
The best show ever growing up as a kid in the 70's!!........ Awsome toys too! What do kids have today to spark their imagination? Yugi-oh, and hand held video games? Big deal.
The episode where Steve knocks off the robot's face was a very disturbing scene back in 1974 and scared me to death. The robot sound effects made it even more horrifying. Episode: "Day of the Robot", Season 1, 1974. In another season 1 episode "Run Steve, Run", Steve has flashbacks of this same scene. In season 2 Dr. Dolans returns and creates a robot of Oscar Goldman. This time Steve knocks the robot's head off !! These 3 episodes came out before the "maskatron" idea and the fembots.
Please help me decide which of the 9 candidates looks most like Lee Majors. Go to the Facebook page "Which one of these guys looks most like Lee Majors?" to see.
Return Of Death Probe in it's last season Fall of 1977 was the ultimate doomsday machine of the TV series not only with it's cutting saw, perfect blast proof exterior, but also it's killer red laser beam blowing up anything it hits.
@Funnysterste yeah i believe it is lol we cant make stuff like that today so you know in the 70s we sure as hell couldn't for this to look real all they needed when the face was gone to look like a robot was a dummy and someone under the dummy to make it look like it was moveing then a stuntman and a good actor like John Saxon and a little special effects added and there you go the bionic man fighting a robot and if they mad a scene like this today i bet it would look real but it still be fake
@Funnysterste sorry i didn't use commas when i talked i guess i must be a robot .only a dumbass would believe that was a real robot and had to say that had to be fake when everyone knows its fake ...and fuck commas i dont wast alot of time putting commas in every damn sentence if you cant read without commas then i dont give a shit .i only left you a reply on your message to tell u what i thought but not to get a smart ass answer like your commas bull shit ...sorry i replyed your message

The Six million Dallar Man was one of my favorite tv shows when I was a kid. Thanks for putting up this clip, didn't like the music though. I'm almost certain that was not the music used for the episode.
Martin E Brooks who was originally casted the part of Dr Rudy Wells for the pilot movie did not take the part until 1975 and eventually full time with the part starting in 1976-77 because he was comitted to a cast part in a Soap Opera series at the time
Martin E Brooks was originally casted as the role of Dr Rudy Wells in Cyborg The Six Million Dollar Man movie in 1973 before going to the late Martin Balsam then after that movie to Alan Oppenheimer who played his role until 1975.
Richard Anderson who began being casted as the character Oscar Goldman in the 2nd Pilot movie Women Wine And War in 1973 really did not have any taste for Science Fiction at all in real life.
The late Darren McGavin guested in Cyborg The Six Million Dollar who also starred in another ABC Suspense Theater Movie series at the time Kolchak The Night Stalker. The Six Million Dollar Man was to be in the Sci Fi tradition of the James Bond and Man From U.N.C.L.E. style series.
Six Million Dollar Man also had excellent ABC Suspense Theater 2 hour pilot movies too in 1973, with its debut Cyborg The Six Million Dollar,Women Wine and War,and The Solid Gold Kidnapping.
Deadly Replay episode in 1974 reprised the event from Cyborg The Six Million Dollar Man movie from early March 1973.
This was one of best of the Six Million Dollar Man episodes in the series 1974 to 1978 along with Death Probe, the Fembots on Kill Oscar,Bigfoot, the Bionic Woman, the other Chester Dolenz Robot Oscar Goldman lookalike, and the Seven Million Dollar Man.
@Drzdog Okay!? Seeing bionic people without their faces used to creep me out. It happened in the Bionic Woman and that movie Futureworld. The posters for that had a picture of Yul Brenner as a bionic cowboy with his face off or something.
@Drzdog My God Steve Austin .. if you know how many good memories back to me. I literally panicked when I saw the faceless robot. I was younger, my cousin had this action figure robot toy and I brought my Six Million Dollar Man action figure with me and he let me play with it ... just good memories
This episode has completely revolutionized the world of TV.
@Drzdog scared!! Me too! I just watched this ep and it holds up amazingly well. Maybe I was scarred for life :) Saw the fembot and death probe eps as well, same thing.
i don't get it..? "the octagon"?? cool that u know the dude's real name, tho. u know u r a 70s tv buff when u know a name like his... or Marie Windsor... lol
Even as a kid, I wondered how that robot's face was supposed to have moved when it was made out of hard plastic, and had no servos or actuators.
I was delighted when "The Terminator" came out. I think that was the first time I saw a humanoid robot design that didn't treat the audience like imbeciles. Ah-nold's insides looked like they actually might've worked.
John Saxon never got the recognition he deserved in his career. Back then I gues you would have to very Caucasian to get lead roles. Yeah he was a black belt. Just like they ripped off Bruce Lee in "Kung Fu" (which by the way was his idea)? John Saxon could have played the Six Million Dollar man many times over.
omg..i am dying here..been like 3o years since i seen this and back then i thought this was the scariest shit....no wonder my dad used to hate when i watched this show but it was cheese and i loved it
Yeah it freaked me out too. The part in 'Westworld' where Yul Brynner's robot face gets the same treatment is even worse because of the scary music leading up to it.
Nightmarish, then as now. I'm happy to know that I wasn't just abnormally sensitive when I was 5 years old watching this in reruns, and scared half to death by that face full of circuitry. The disembodied, emotionless mask is equally creepy, it's so well done. The fembots on The Bionic Woman are arguably twice as creepy, what with the addition of those big round eyes, but this one still packs a punch, no pun intended.
This episode scared me so bad when I was a little girl that I yelled at my mom to turn off the televsion. Now as an adult I can see why a liitle girl would be scared of this.
I started to write something and pushed a wrong button. O.K., i'm waiting for it to download, damn dial-up. So i read everyone's comments. Hillarious...I couldn't place this John Saxon and when i scanned on top of the page there he was. Now i remember, it's so amazing how these episodes bring back memories. I remember Oscar being a robot too, he stepped on a pen i think and crushed it to bits. The fembots were scary too with their googily eyes. let u know about the clip when it downloads.
no they were not special effects they were makeup effects they were alng a lot longer then special effects on the computer and stuff all this is is makeup and stuff

Creepy. And yeah what's with the straight arm punches? Guess that's how robots were supposed to punch back then.

What's with all the straight arm fighting? Steven Austin looks like he thinking 'did I leave the iron on' at the end.
