With Phil's announced retirement, we can all feel a bit older and just that much more mortal. Thank you Phil, Tony, Mike, Daryl, Chester, Peter, Steve for so many, many memories and so much indelible music. Thankfully, we still have the music, and for me, at least, it immediately puts me back in that "place".
@DjFinMix If there is any song that deserves to stand out on its own and not just part of the Lamb, then it's this one (and to a lesser extent, "In The Cage"). :)
This is the first time I have seen this and it reminded me of something - Phil sings this amazingly like he did on the 1976 Genesis In concert footage, 31 years before.
Fabuloso, maravilhoso, sem palavras... vi e ouvi com Peter Gabriel e depois com o próprio phil, idos dos anos 70, agora... meu irmão Clodoaldo me deu essa preciosidade
If they played it in the original keys, they wouldn't last 2 songs....I would like to be 55 y/o and be on stage singing in front of a hundred thou........props to Genesis. Their only crime is that they're aging.
a gorgeous song , sang wonderfully well by a chap who sang it equally well 30+ years ago, well done guys still sounding great. I wish i had a tiny slice of your talent.
I see a lot of comments about this song is played in lower keys than originally - I think this is attributed to Phil losing his hearing and cannot sing as high as he used to - if you listen to all the songs from this concert he struggled with and shortened all pieces where he was singing high notes - so to help him sing through the songs, they lowered everything...
The song was written in 1974. As you get older, your voice gets lower. So 33 years on, can you sing a song like you did when first recorded? Watch Peter Gabriel's last two live DVDs. Things are keyed lower (Red Rain springs to mind off the top of my head, Shock The Monkey from 2003 doesn't sound like Shock The Monkey 1982). It's not the band keying things lower for no reason, it's called nature. As you get older, your voice gets lower.
Sutainer? lol i'll buy him a sustainer if you promise to buy a dictionary and attend those local slow learning unit lessons your grandma paid for :O))

Hey asshole! Who on hell asked you to tell me the name and the model of that guitar? I knew he has that sustainer system and eventhough, I already have one installed on my guitar. The point is that he can't hold a note for more than three seconds as Steve used to do it with his Les Paul in the late 70's without any kind of "system sustainer". I like daryl very much as a musician but he didn't use his sustainer so often. Next time try to close your fat ass before being ironic with me.
you are clearly an ineffable dunce who has nothing to say and you say it well :O)), now run along and try to learn something about music, and learn to spell you sad and I must say rather ugly cunt. :O))
I see there is so much envy towards people who not only can play a instrument very well but can express his ideas for a few idiots who cannot even kick a football. If I were an englishman, I would be rather dissapointed that a simple Argentinian remains a discussion with you. I don't mind to speak the lenguaje as a native, I just get satisfied if you, dumbs, get the idea.
The last thing that I gonna add is that I can give you lesson about Music, guitar and above all... about Genesis.
christ you are a highly strung out argentinian lol take a chill pill and remember the Falklands mate :O)) oh and for fucks sake learn to play the fucking guitar lmao fucking terrible stuff.
One more thing, try to listen the Seconds out's version of this song and try to compare them (If your brain has the gift to distinguish melodies) connecting the differences between both sustainings methods.
I saw Genesis in Chorzów in Poland in June 2007 and I`m sure no other concert can be compared to that one due to the terrible thunder storm that continued throughout the concert adding to the band`s outstanding performance! I suppose the musicians were quite terrified with the lightnings that tore the sky and almost cancelled the concert but the fans` determination and cheering convinced them it was worth playing!!!
I agree they haven't played this song this well since the 1977 tour. My favorite songs on the CD are Ripples, Carpet Crawl, Domino, and the Cage/Afterglow.
'Domino' was the only song I really could have done without. I'd have preferred "Fading Lights' or almost anything else to that. It's just a very dated tune to me even though it's one of Tony's favorites and Tony is far and away my favorite writer in the band.
I actually really enjoyed the "2000" version. Unfortunately, everyone seemed to record it separately and it wasn't a true band effort. It must be a difficult for Phil to sing a song that he didn't write the lyrics for - especially 32 years after it was written.
Excellent quality. Do you have Invisible Touch or Land of Confusion? I'd love to see any Genesis song in this quality form this tour really. Keep up the good work.
I was in Chicago too.... this song was the perfect way to end the show.... I saw the last show in Chicago and I still have that Carpet Crawlers chorus in my head.... I love it!!

The version found on the First Archive Box Set - sung by Gabriel - is naturally my favourite.
He understands the song in a way that Phil just doesn't.
However, to be fair, Phil does a fine job here.

I actually really enjoyed the "2000" version. Unfortunately, everyone seemed to record it separately and it wasn't a true band effort. It must be a difficult for Phil to sing a song that he didn't write the lyrics for - especially 32 years after it was written.

Roger Daltrey does that on a regular basis, and for the most part is convincing.
I liked the 2000 re-recording, as well. I think Phil actually does a much better job on that than he does here.
It's kind of a shame they omitted the one verse, though.
